This article provides information on special student fees authorized by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These fees are assessments beyond the regular tuition costs paid by all students when departments must purchase markedly unusual, expendable materials or equipment for use by small numbers of students in certain highly specialized courses. Special fees have also been authorized for departments required to provide services, equipment, or facilities for small populations of students when such services, equipment or facilities are clearly beyond those commonly provided for the majority of students on campus. This article focuses on the problems faced by new college professors and the key to their success, which is communication: establishing a network for information, assistance and encouragement. When colleges and universities start new faculty off in the right direction, those faculty members will function better as teachers, as scholars, as committee members, and as long-term members of that academic community. Considering the financial investment a school makes in the interview process and in the hiring of new faculty, a thoroughly considered and well financed orientation program is insurance no college or university should be without.

Perspectives On Norm-Referenced And Criterion-Referenced Grading In Introductory Speech Performance Courses, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer

This article explores the integration and amalgamation of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced perspectives in a manner that is particularly appropriate for use in basic or introductory speech communication performance courses. Possibly the greatest virtue of using criterion-referenced grading of speeches in a basic speech performance course is the generation of positive affect toward performance. Because students identify with their speeches, they are much more demoralized by negative feedback about their work on these assignments than for others. By setting appropriate minimal performance criteria that most beginning students can achieve, morale remains high, there is an atmosphere of success, and, in fact, …

This article presents a survey which assessed the typical number of core courses college departments have, the most commonly used ones, and, in a general way, their contents. The article also provides data on department names and undergraduate program areas for a picture of the communication discipline in the 1990s. First, with regard to core course requirements, the following observations are noted: Though a majority of departments now have some type of core course requirement, a strong minority don't. This article presents a study examining the funding aspects of college and university radio stations. The article focuses on the investigation of the variables of station management positions, station types, station power and perceptions of station purposes among radio station directors as possible significant predictors of selected factors which influence the funding of college and university noncommercial radio stations. The traditional function of most campus radio stations has been to serve as a training ground for students who plan to enter professional broadcasting. An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres

The article presents a study which assesses scholarly productivity in telecommunication-oriented journals from 1985-1995. Telecommunication can be defined as mediated communication across a distance. Sixteen journals were selected for this analysis. Most were listed among publications with the highest number of telecommunication authorship credits, according to Vincent's study. Some of the differences in journal contributions may be a function of publication frequency and size. For instance, Journal of Media Economics (3.6 percent of articles) offered two issues/year through 1990 before expanding to four issues in 1993. Journalism Quarterly publishes more articles per issue than any of the other criterion journals. …

Problem. Power is a phenomenon that is known to almost everyone, and is evident in any relationship that involves at least two individuals. Despite its inescapability, not many individuals are aware of its nature and characteristics and how it displays itself, especially in the organizational setting. This study focused on how power displays itself in religious organizations, and described particular activities that occur in the context of three religious schools in Michigan.

Colleges and universities which permit students to apply for admission and/or register for classes after the beginning of the academic term may be adhering to an institutional policy which encourages unrestricted access to all qualified applicants. However, by permitting such students late entry, the late enrolling students, the students who were admitted and registered in a timely manner, the faculty, and the institution may suffer as a result. In 1972 Title IX, the vaccine against gender inequity, was unveiled. Title IX is a federal law making sex discrimination in schools illegal. Under Title IX, sex bias is outlawed in school athletics, career counseling, medical services, financial aid, admission practices, and the treatment of students. In 1974, Congress passed the Women's Educational Equity Act to fund research, materials, and training to help schools eliminate gender bias. In 1978, Congress broadened the Civil Rights Act to include educational services to eliminate gender bias. Under the redesigned civil rights legislation, ten sex desegregation assistance centers were created to assist teachers, parents, …

Research in leadership that focuses on gender and ethnicity issues provides us with little practical information for women, The few studies that do exist point to gender and race discrimination (Doughty, 1980; Marcias, ]994; Gorena, 1996), Researchers must move beyond the documentation of negative past and present conditions for women and minorities and begin to look at ways these individuals can achieve equality. Preparing for the job search, acquiring administrative skills, being part of a network, being in the "right place at the right time," and being the most qualified for a position are all pathways to administrative positions.

Throughout the United States, the majority of students enrolled in educational administration preparation programs are women. The struggle by women to gain leadership positions continues in the 1990s. A survey conducted by The Executive Educator and Xavier University shows that women are best represented among the ranks of elementary school principals (39.7%), followed by junior high/middle school principals (20.5%), and high school principals (12.1 …
