This article proposes a micro evaluation system that quantifies faculty performance in research teaching and service to guide merit pay decisions and strategic planning in higher education communication departments. This article investigates the enduring impact of a dedicated listening course in higher education by examining alumni perceptions of skill transfer and academic benefit several years after enrollment. Questionnaire responses reveal that instruction in the listening process discriminative comprehensive critical and therapeutic listening fosters greater academic confidence improved grades enhanced professional communication and stronger interpersonal relationships. The analysis identifies course units on process comprehension comprehensive and discriminative listening as most valuable while theoretical and research components require refinement. Findings support the integration of explicit listening pedagogy within speech communication curricula and suggest that early curricular placement may maximize learning outcomes. …

Using a mailed questionnaire to recent university graduates, this study evaluates how well undergraduate programs equip communication majors for communication and information technologies common in the workplace. Respondents reported that fax machines and word processing software were the only tools present in more than seventy percent of their work units, while voice messaging was the sole technology most of them used daily. Yet fewer than half felt competent with even these basic applications. Alumni said they acquired skills for nineteen of forty four surveyed technologies only after graduation, and most rated their campus preparation as only somewhat useful or not …

Responding to evidence of weak oral communication competence among college students, this case study chronicles how one university embedded speaking across the curriculum within a new general core. Defining advanced literacy as critical comprehension plus public participation, the reform added a required presentation oriented basic course followed by an upper division oral intensive course in each major. Three emphases emerged: public speaking, small group, and technical presentation, each shaped by shared grading weights, developmental tasks, minimum audience size, and structured feedback. University mandated assessment can improve learning but also carries political stakes that shape department survival. This article chronicles five years of assessment activity in a communication program after a statewide directive and shows how faculty moved from resistance to cautious optimism as they refined competency based tests portfolios and interviews. Based on a national questionnaire sent to every U.S. speech-communication program, this study maps the landscape of undergraduate academic advising in the discipline. Results show advising remains overwhelmingly faculty-based: 73 percent of departments assign all tenure-track (or all faculty) to the task, yet advisee distribution is skewed, with a median load of 23 students and 56 percent of departments allocating advisees by faculty area specialty. Preparation and rewards are thin; one-third of advisors receive no training and only 9 percent gain any course-load reduction, while 86 percent report no formal compensation. This essay argues that mass communication programs must reclaim their place in the liberal arts rather than serving as vocational finishing schools for the media industry. Decades of deference, it contends, have let professionals dictate skills-heavy curricula, foster the belief that universities exist to supply entry-level labor, and equate education with training. Drawing on administrative and student-development literature, this article outlines criteria for discipline-centered student organizations and then examines the creation, growth, and outcomes of a nonperformance Speech Communication Club at a large Midwestern university. The club’s evolution is traced through three phases—felt need, growth and development, and stabilization—highlighting structural changes such as a rotating executive board and committee system. Behavior disordered and emotionally disturbed students entering a unique school environment as a part of a therapeutic residential treatment center are faced with many difficult adjustments. These students traditionally have more problems coping with stressful situations than ''normal" students. Research on adjustment and student handbooks indicates that an appropriate orientation to a new program which includes a clear definition of goals and expectations has a positive effect on emotional and psychological adjustment of new students.

The purpose of this field experience was three fold: 1) to determine the existence of formal teacher orientation programs, 2) the contents of the programs, and 3) the level of satisfaction by the principal(s) regarding the formal teacher orientation programs for newly employed teachers. A survey of the high schools in Educational Service Centers 15, 16, 17, and 18 was conducted.

The main purpose of this field study was to examine factors related to school consolidation in Lawrence County, Illinois. Two unit school districts-Community Unit School District No. 10 and No. 20-have been in operation since 1972 in southeastern Illinois. Both districts have full recognition by the Illinois State Board of Education and North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1991-92, approximately 2,800 students attended kindergarten through twelfth grade in Lawrence County. However, financial considerations were the primary concerns of the schools/ operations. In 1981-82, two school districts in the state of Iowa shared one superintendent; in 1985-86, 10 districts shared five superintendents; by 1991-92, 116 school districts reported sharing 58 superintendents. Studies on the shared superintendency suggested that role overload accompanied the position and that superintendents reacted to the increased workload by delegating responsibilities, often to building principals.
