The purpose of this study was to determine the current involvement of principals and teachers in shared decision making as well as desired levels, and to identify the perceived areas of acceptance and non-acceptance by educators. Eight domains of the Teacher Decision Making Instrument: planning, policy, curriculum/instruction, pupil personnel, staff personnel, staff development, school/community relations, and budget management were used to assess the actual and desired levels of participation in shared decision making by the respondents. A random sample was selected from the public schools of Northeast Tennessee. Seventy-five schools were surveyed which included 75 principals and 1632 teachers. Responses …

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent that public school principals in Tennessee perceived their jobs as stressful, to identify the major sources of job-related stress within the school environment, to determine the coping strategies most often used by principals to manage occupational stress, and to relate the findings to certain demographic characteristics. The need for stress management education among the principals was also ascertained. The data collected in this study revealed that a majority of the principals (78%) perceived their jobs as moderately to extremely stressful, and approximately 70% of the principals indicated that 70% or …

Materials were gathered from East Tennessee State University Library, University of Tennessee Library, Walters State Community College Library, Belmont University Library, Tennessee State Library and Archives and Morristown-Hamblen County Library. This study examines the 21 competency domains of the National Policy Board of Educational Administration (NPBEA) and their importance in a collaborative effort like Cities in Schools (CIS). Data were compiled from a survey mailed to 195 CIS principals in the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through in-depth interviews, those factors which served to motivate early marriage women in the attainment of associate degrees and to identify characteristics of early marriage women who were successful in completing associate degrees. The details obtained from these interviews were interpreted and their meanings used to generate propositions and implications about the completion of associate degrees by this group of students. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 early marriage women (informants) who either completed associate degrees or were within 12 semester hours of completing an associate degree. The purpose of this study was to determine if teacher effectiveness, as measured by value-added gain scores on student achievement, was related to the teacher personality characteristics of efficacy and locus of control. The value-added mean gain scores for each teacher were correlated with teachers' scores on the Rand Corporation Efficacy Scale and the Rose and Medway Teacher Locus of Control Scale. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine if these teacher characteristics along with selected demographic variables could be used as good predictors of achievement gain. This study evaluated the attributes, teaching effectiveness and educational commitment of part-time faculty in enrollment-funded community colleges. The Student Instructional Rating instrument was used to measure student perceptions of instructors in the community college. Twenty four community colleges were randomly selected from North Carolina. Within each college, four full-time and four part-time faculty were randomly selected to participate in the study. Attributes of part-time faculty were compared to attributes of full-time faculty. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among hardiness, health and burnout and to investigate the relationships of the subscales of hardiness to health and to the subscales of burnout among teachers in the Sullivan County School System. The Hardiness Test was used to measure hardiness and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Form Ed to measure burnout. This was a two-phase study designed to identify intuitive principals and then to determine if there were common elements of their decision making. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was used to identify intuitive principals, and then a sampling of these principals were interviewed. The results showed that the principals with the highest preference scores for intuition differed from the principals with lower preference scores in that they came from supportive environments, were more conscious of using and developing their intuition, drew from experience but combined that with a future orientation, and were more comfortable with risk-taking and change.
