Attitudes Of Administrators, School Board Members, And Teachers Relating To Labor Peace, Larry Eldon Engel

The purpose of this investigation was to provide evidence for the proposition that when positive attitudes exist between the parties of the collective bargaining process labor peace exists.

Data were generated using the Walton and McKersie Attitude Structuring Model. The instrument used was a questionnaire prepared by Crandall (1976). Two-way ANOVA techniques were employed. Districts were designated by type of labor peace using criteria adopted from the Golden Studies of 1955. The sample population consisted of 30 school districts with 153 administrators, teachers, and board members responding to the instrument.

The objectives of this study were to examine the present process of performance appraisal used in Michigan as well as to determine if the participants in that process see any need for change. If change was desired this study sought to determine what direction that change should take. A review of the literature established a background which implied a general pervasive dissatisfaction with the present process and a need for change as well as several directions that change might take. This project report records the internship experience as Administrative Assistant at the Calhoun Area Vocational Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. Chapter I is the background of the internship. The plan for the internship is found in the prospectus in Chapter II. The log for the internship is recorded in Appendix A which describes the leadership skills experienced in planning, organizing, controlling and evaluating. The purpose of this paper is to describe a six-week internship completed with the Buchanan Community schools during which the intern engaged in a variety of administrative activities.

Chapter I contains the rationale for the selection of the Buchanan Community Schools, a brief description of the school system, background information on the Buchanan Community Schools and the City of Buchanan, and the prospectus which structured the experience.

Chapter II describes the experiences during the internship which involve administrative tasks, budget preparation, and procedures.

Social trends towards accountability have motivated correctional facilities to improve the professionalism of their staff. This study investigated in-service training of correctional officers as an avenue to improve professionalism in the correctional facility. The study was concerned with only the county jails of the state of Michigan.

Three investigatory areas were developed to research training in Michigan county jails. These areas included a review of the existing literature, a review of Michigan county jail training programs, and a survey of Michigan sheriffs concerning their existing training programs (descriptive theory) and what they perceived should be incorporated into training (normative theory). …

This study was designed to compare the attitudes of samples of American and Iranian graduate Engineering students from four state universities in Michigan— Western Michigan University, Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and.the University of Michigan— toward some selected U.S.-based leadership principles pertaining to the leaders' use of authority, influence, and power. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in perceptions between various educators regarding needed competencies for the position of principal in Guam. The study was undertaken because of the relative lack of empirical data in Guam regarding competencies for education administrator positions. In addition, there appeared to be a need to examine the perceptions of others on competencies for the principalship outside of those included by Holder in 1962.

A directory of self-help organizations in Vermilion County, Illinois, was developed as a project to complete the requirements of the Specialist in Education degree through the Department of Education Leadership at Western Michigan University. The intern's training placement was with the Vermilion County Community 708 Mental Health Board, a mental health funding agency.

It was determined that the majority of self-help groups in Vermilion County were not listed in any existing directory and that a directory of self-help groups was needed. The objective of this experiential project was to examine the role and functions of the school business manager and the school business office.

Major areas that were examined were budgeting procedures, investigation of school district insurance coverage, investigation of developing alternative revenue sources such as a preschool and day care center, and shared time programs.

A traditional method of correcting errant behavior of young children has been the use of corporal punishment in the home and 'in loco parentis' in our public schools. Corporal punishment as a disciplinary method, stands on historical precedent and continued social practice, having found its way to America as part of Old World tradition and Puritan theology.
