To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

One of the hallmarks of the annual POD Conference is that all "presenters" are required to design active sessions, to involve participants, to attempt to model effective practice in teaching and learning. One of the assumptions in putting together a collection of resources for people engaged in faculty and organizational development work in higher education is that we include pieces that describe learning activities, that can be used as aids in stimulating teachers and collegiate staff to rethink their goals and build new skills. Hence this section of "hands on" materials.

Social theorists in earlier periods have looked at credentialing from the perspective of its service to the economic or social system as opposed to its “protection of the public interest.” Adam Smith regarded the long education and the performance tests that the guilds required as monopolistic constraints on production; Karl Marx saw the same guild system as controlled by the propertied classes and uselessly exclusionary; and Emile Durkheim, unlike both Smith and Marx, regarded the occupational group with its entrance requirements as central to the stability of modern society. Learning takes place at several levels-in the individual, in groups, in organizations and in the larger society. It is amazing how much of our efforts in the past have focused exclusively on individual learning. It may be that we are learning slowly as a society, and our institutions seldom seem to develop much beyond their initial geniuses. But as a group, those of us engaged in faculty, staff and organizational development in higher education have aimed at being more reflective and intentional about our learning.
