Textbook Selection Process: An Historical Account Of The Steps Involved In Textbook Selection Guidelines For Washington State Public Schools, James D. Shannon

Local schools and school districts in the State of Washington have the responsibility for selecting textbooks to meet the district's philosophies, goals, and objectives as well as state regulations. To eliminate some of the problems inherent in this situation and to ensure more satisfactory results, this writer developed a procedure based on a committee approach, using a participatory decision making mode. Also, evaluative criteria and a rating tool were designed for use in screening, evaluating, and selecting textbooks. This project presents the steps used in the process.

The Nature Of The Middle School In Washington State - 1980, Edward Allen Barnhart

The nature of the middle school in the state of Washington and its conformance to the middle school concept was studied. Eighty-four of the state's ninety-two middle school principals reported on programs and offerings in their schools. The study indicated that Washington middle schools conform favorably to the concept in all major areas except grading practices and athletic programs. The schools recognize a developmental stage of transescence and minister to it through child-child- centered rather than subject-centered programs. Further study is recommended to compare the middle school with the junior high school in the state of Washington.

A Content Analysis Of Public School Education News In An Independently Owned Small Daily Newspaper, Linda L. Mccleary

Newspapers and school districts form a tentative partnership in the dissemination of education news. Subjects preferred by readers have not been reflected in actual education news coverage. Emphasis on utility information at the expense of in-depth writing about what is going on in public education has been standard practice. Content analysis shows that while quantity of education news seems reasonable, the quality of that news fails to transmit to readers the substance of what teachers and children are accomplishing in the public schools.

Relationship Between Systematic Planning At Community Colleges And Goal Agreement, Nancy Emily Stetson

The relationship between systematic planning at community colleges and goal agreement among administrators was studied. Sixty-nine administrators at four community colleges were surveyed. The results showed that administrators at the two community colleges who perceived their institutions to be relatively more systematic in planning also perceived relatively smaller gaps between what were, and what should be the goals of their institutions. By this measure, community college administrators demonstrated a consistent and positive relationship between systematic planning and goal agreement.

The Significance Of Projecting Enrollment In Determining School District Apportionment Revenue In Washington State For 1979, Charles M. Plesha

The enrollment of the Sunnyside School District for the 1979-80 school year was estimated. This enrollment figure determined the potential staff allocation size, which in turn determined the 3010 apportionment revenues from the state. Revenues, likewise, determined the district's 00, 30 and 97 programs' staff expenditures. Those predictions were made for the general fund budget only. In addition, other revenues received from the state by Sunnyside School District, which effected the 3010 apportionment account, were explained. Actual historical enrollment data of Sunnyside School District No. 201 were utilized to make all projections as meaningful as possible.

This project presents a faculty handbook prepared for the staff at Tahoma Junior High School in Maple Valley, Washington, The handbook was designed with two main purposes in mind: 1) to establish two-way communication among staff members as well as staff and administration; and 2) to render the educational process more efficient. The handbook includes fifteen major sections dealing with such topics as duties, rights and responsibilities, school policy and procedures, evaluation, and scheduling. This project presents a proposed policy handbook to the board of directors of the Union Gap School District which will replace the present outdated handbook. Prior to writing the new policies, a review was made of educational literature on policy development, the Union Gap School District's board minutes, and surrounding school districts policy handbooks. The policies from the surrounding school districts were categorized according to subject matter, and, utilizing these policies along with a close communication with the school board and the superintendent, new policies were developed that would meet the unique needs of the Union Gap School District.

Improving Evaluation Skills Of Supervisors In The Federal Way School District, Joseph L. Pope

This project is an attempt to provide the Federal Way School District with an observation system. The system was patterned after the Instrument for the Observation of Teaching Activities by a twelve member committee of District Administrators. The system was then implemented to all supervisory personnel through a series of five workshops in the Fall of 1977.

The system's success was monitored and an evaluation was made by teachers and other supervisors.

Recommendations are for continued growth of this system.

This paper represents a study of the activation of iii a student council and its effects on total school climate. The activation program was outlined with specific activities described in detail. The study was designed to provide for a comparison of predetermined indicators which were measured before and after the activation took place. In October 1974, a pilot survey was conducted at the state convention of the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals in Spokane, Washington. The concern of the pilot survey was to indicate the general compliance for school administrators with RCW 28A.67.065. The results indicated that 75 percent of the districts surveyed evaluate their principals while only 41 percent indicated an evaluation of the superintendent. Were these percentages to hold true and accurate, eighty districts in the state would not be evaluating their principals and 188 superintendents would not be evaluated. This study was made to gain information pertinent to assessing the effectiveness of the Association of Washington School Principals in meeting the needs of its members who are elementary school principals. The study indicated that a majority of the respondents felt that Association was doing an adequate job. However, a significant relationship was found to exist between principals from small districts and the feeling of inadequate representation.

Due to the newness of this Association, it is recommended that a similar study be done in the future.

This paper presents the results of a survey of identifiable audiovisual program directors in Oregon and Washington education systems K-16. The purpose of the survey was to determine the amount of electronic background the directors had and if a knowledge of electronics was useful to them in the fulfillment of their duties as related to the selection, operation, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment. The survey indicated that such knowledge was useful.

This paper presents a study of perceptions by Puyallup regular teachers, administrators, and substitute teachers of the extent assistance is provided Puyallup substitutes. The writer believed results of this study would indicate the groups would differ in their perceptions.

A questionnaire was sent to random samples of the three groups. Analysis of variance and t-test were statistics used.

Student Teachers: Attitudes And Job Preferences After Student Teaching In Minority Ethnic Situations, Edward Franklin Covall

This paper presents the results of a study undertaken to determine the effect student teacher placement has on job preferences. Seventy-nine of 116 questionnaires were returned from Yakima and East Valley School District student teachers during the 1972-1973 school year two weeks after student teaching during Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters.

The results indicated that most student teachers, regardless of where they taught, minority ethnic or not, seek jobs in non-minority schools.
