Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This document combines news announcements and the complete minutes of the Association for Communication Administration Executive Committee meeting held on March 6, 1985. The news portion outlines a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow the president to remain on the committee for one additional year. It also previews the forthcoming election for three committee positions and includes commentary on national concerns regarding teacher shortages and the growing emphasis on communication skills across professional fields. The minutes provide a detailed account of administrative actions, including planning for the thirteenth annual seminar, development of convention programs, budget approval, revision of recruitment materials, …

Theatre As A Liberal Art, Gladys M. Crane Aug 1985

Theatre As A Liberal Art, Gladys M. Crane

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay argues that theatre belongs centrally within the liberal arts because it is a humanizing discipline rooted in the interpretation of human action. Theatre is presented as an eclectic art that synthesizes visual, spatial, aural, and temporal forms, while requiring analytical, interpretive, and integrative judgment throughout the production process. The discussion emphasizes that theatrical creation engages imagination, creativity, and critical evaluation as students move from script analysis to design, rehearsal, and performance. Because theatre draws on psychology, sociology, history, and ethics, the study of plays and characters demands sustained reflection on values, cultural contexts, and human motivation. The essay …

In Defense Of Mass Communication As A Liberal Art, Robert K. Tiemens Aug 1985

In Defense Of Mass Communication As A Liberal Art, Robert K. Tiemens

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends mass communication as a legitimate component of the liberal arts and responds to criticisms both from outside and within the communication discipline. The author argues that mass communication courses address fundamental questions about the social, political, and cultural influence of media and therefore extend far beyond technical training. The discussion emphasizes that liberal education requires understanding how mediated symbols shape public life and contends that studying the effects, practices, and history of broadcasting aligns directly with liberal arts aims. The essay also notes that accrediting standards already require a strong ratio of liberal arts coursework for mass …

Developing A Program Justification: Strategies For Locating And Valuing The Discipline, Ronald L. Applbaum Aug 1985

Developing A Program Justification: Strategies For Locating And Valuing The Discipline, Ronald L. Applbaum

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay evaluates arguments offered by four communication subfields regarding their place within the liberal arts and proposes a broader strategy for program justification in contemporary higher education. The author contends that while the contributing essays aim to demonstrate disciplinary value, they pursue divergent goals and do not provide persuasive grounds for resource allocation by senior administrators. Situating the discussion within shifting institutional priorities, the essay notes that colleges have increasingly blended liberal and vocational learning in response to changing student demand and external pressures. The author argues that communication’s diversity can be a strength, as the discipline engages both …

Analysis Of Teaching Evaluation Instruments Collected By Aca, Betty Jo Welch Aug 1985

Analysis Of Teaching Evaluation Instruments Collected By Aca, Betty Jo Welch

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes twenty nine student evaluation instruments collected from seventy five higher education institutions in the United States and Canada in order to determine how teaching effectiveness is conceptualized and measured. The study identifies substantial variation in instrument design yet finds seven recurring dimensions: organization, student teacher interaction and rapport, classroom skill and lecturing ability, workload and course difficulty, grading and evaluation, personal satisfaction, and course content. Representative literature is reviewed to assess the strengths and limitations of evaluation approaches such as alumni surveys, self evaluation, student achievement measures, classroom visitation, and peer review. Research evidence indicates that well …

Under And Over The Hill, Peter Garvie Aug 1985

Under And Over The Hill, Peter Garvie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay reflects on the problem of faculty who have become unproductive, disengaged, or resistant to change and considers how academic communities perceive and respond to such colleagues. Through an extended narrative and metaphorical analysis, the author distinguishes between those who have not yet reached professional maturity, those who have declined after earlier achievement, and those whose self perception is disconnected from their actual performance. The essay examines institutional tendencies to tolerate or obscure persistent non productivity, often due to bureaucratic structures that make intervention difficult. Drawing on metaphors of light, shadow, perception, and psychological projection, the author explores how …

The Ideal Dean: Appropriate And Inappropriate Roles, Ladonna M. Geddes Apr 1985

The Ideal Dean: Appropriate And Inappropriate Roles, Ladonna M. Geddes

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the responsibilities of the ideal dean during a period of financial constraint and shifting expectations. It argues that the dean’s role encompasses two primary domains: planning and leadership. Planning responsibilities include guiding long term strategy, maintaining comprehensive internal and external data, and using economic, political, and educational trends to inform resource allocation and goal setting. Leadership responsibilities involve serving as a communication link across institutional levels, resolving contradictions in mission, cultivating external relationships, and articulating clear evaluative standards. The article emphasizes the importance of situational leadership, generational differences in values, and informed judgment in human relations. It …

Tenure: A Concept Whose Time Has Passed?, Bert E. Bradley Apr 1985

Tenure: A Concept Whose Time Has Passed?, Bert E. Bradley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article evaluates whether traditional tenure practices remain viable within contemporary higher education. It argues that the lifetime employment guarantee awarded after a brief probationary period has drawn increasing criticism from legislators, administrators, faculty, and students. Abuses associated with tenure include faculty members who remain minimally active for decades and the perception that tenure shelters incompetence. The article contends that earlier justifications for tenure, namely protection of academic freedom and insulation from administrative or public pressure, have been overtaken by court decisions and faculty unionization that already safeguard those rights. Economic pressures, declining enrollments, and public scrutiny are identified as …
