An Investigation Of The Quantity Of Articles Produced In The Communication Discipline: An Institutional Analysis On The Basis Of Highest Degree Conferred, Larry L. Barker, Vernon O. Ray, Kittie W. Watson, Robert N. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article extends prior research on institutional publication productivity in the communication discipline by analyzing article output between 1980 and 1985 according to the highest degree offered by institutions. Data were collected from ten major journals, with credit assigned proportionally for multi-authored works. Results identify the most productive institutions at the doctoral, master’s, and non-graduate levels, showing that while doctoral-granting institutions produced the greatest volume, significant contributions also came from master’s programs and institutions without graduate degrees. The analysis provides comparative rankings of institutions, highlights differences in productivity across categories, and notes limitations such as the inability to assess publication …

Communication In The Socialization Of The Academic Department Chairperson, Christopher H. Spicer, Ann Q. Staton-Spicer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the role of communication in the socialization of new academic department chairs. While most chairs are appointed with little or no administrative training, they must quickly adapt to complex responsibilities involving leadership without extensive authority. Using intensive interviews with four newly appointed chairs, the study identifies a typology of twenty-one communication dimensions across four functional categories: informative, integrative, regulative, and innovative. These include activities such as information seeking and giving, relationship building, exercising authority, and initiating change. Findings show that communication is central to role-making as chairs negotiate expectations, establish credibility, and adapt prior faculty experience to …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article analyzes the origins, goals, and strategies of Accuracy in Academia (AIA), a conservative organization that emerged in the mid-1980s as an outgrowth of Accuracy in Media. AIA claims to promote accuracy in higher education but has pursued tactics such as encouraging students to report on faculty, publishing alleged errors, and recruiting volunteers to monitor classes. The discussion highlights how these efforts, framed as correcting bias, often targeted liberal faculty and created controversy by pressuring universities through media exposure and alumni concerns. A case study involving Virginia Tech illustrates how AIA campaigns, though unsuccessful in altering teaching practices, generated …

After appeals and hearings, the university trustees deferred closure and eventually voted to continue the program, aided by changes in state oversight agencies. The discussion provides guidance for administrators facing similar reviews, …
