Evaluation And Artistic Vision: A Review Of Progress To Date, Donald L. Rosenberg Aug 1989

Evaluation And Artistic Vision: A Review Of Progress To Date, Donald L. Rosenberg

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reviews the development and implementation of external evaluation systems for assessing creative achievement in academic theatre, particularly in the context of promotion and tenure decisions. Tracing the evolution of national guidelines and professional task force recommendations, the discussion outlines key principles for documenting artistic work, including peer and extramural review, open evaluator selection, and extended timeframes for assessment. It explores tensions between educational and professional standards, addresses the risks of overemphasizing directing over other creative roles, and raises concerns about the potential for artistic conservatism under continuous scrutiny. The article argues that evaluation practices must reflect diverse institutional …

The Role Of Indirect Tests In Assessing Communication Competence, Michael R. Neer Aug 1989

The Role Of Indirect Tests In Assessing Communication Competence, Michael R. Neer

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reports on the design, implementation, and analysis of an indirect assessment instrument developed to measure communication competence among graduating seniors at a public urban university. Developed to support diagnostic placement and curricular review, the assessment includes components in public speaking, communication theory, mass communication, and media writing, emphasizing cognitive understanding rather than observed performance. Results indicate moderate reliability across test components and reveal that academic performance, internship experience, employment status, and time to degree completion mediate assessment outcomes. Grade point average alone was not a consistent predictor of performance, suggesting that behavioral application and contextual engagement play significant …

Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser Aug 1989

Problems With The Use Of Citation Indexes In Communication Research, Edward Funkhouser

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article evaluates the limitations of using citation indexes as research tools in communication studies, particularly when ranking journals, departments, or individual scholars. It examines how the omission of five major communication journals from widely used indexes distorts the visibility and influence of scholarship in the field. Through an analysis of citations to articles published in leading association journals, the study finds that approximately one third of all citations originate from journals not included in citation databases. These omissions reduce the effectiveness of citation indexes for literature searches, bibliometric studies, and faculty evaluation. The article advocates for the inclusion of …

Association For Theatre In Higher Education Task Force On Distribution Chair's Report, Jon Whitmore Aug 1989

Association For Theatre In Higher Education Task Force On Distribution Chair's Report, Jon Whitmore

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article presents a policy report from a national task force convened to examine workload distribution and program structure within collegiate theatre departments. Initially charged with developing guidelines for faculty assignment, the task force identified broader systemic imbalances affecting the discipline, including overextended faculty, declining student preparation, insufficient research capacity, and pressure to prioritize production over pedagogy. The report urges departments to define clear educational missions, align degree offerings with available resources, and reevaluate production models to prioritize student learning and disciplinary advancement. It also calls for workload policies that account for discipline specific labor such as directing, design, dramaturgy, …

Belridge School: The Future Communication Program, Richard F. Boylan

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes a prototype communication education model developed in a small California school district, presenting it as a potential blueprint for future curriculum design across K–12 and higher education. The program integrates personal computing, media production, and networked information access into all aspects of learning, while intentionally involving students’ families in both technological and educational engagement. Grounded in communication pedagogy, the initiative provides year round, individualized instruction supported by a multimedia infrastructure that includes desktop publishing, distance learning, and local broadcast capabilities. The article argues that early, sustained exposure to communication technologies will reshape expectations for college level programs, …

Race And Excellence In American Higher Education, James Jennings Jun 1989

Race And Excellence In American Higher Education, James Jennings

Trotter Review

W,E.B. DuBois’ assessment of American higher education’s posture toward black students in 1926 — “The attitude of the northern institution toward the Negro student is one which varies from tolerance to active hostility” — could have been written today based on several investigations. The American Council on Education reported recently that “the higher education community must continue to address the issues of losses in participation at all levels for blacks; the segregation of Hispanics; the retention and graduation of minority students, both undergraduate and graduate; the lack of growth for minorities in faculty and staff ranks.” The College Board reports …

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman Jun 1989

The Academic Workplace: Perception Versus Reality, Sandra E. Elman

New England Journal of Public Policy

Why are faculty becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the academic workplace? What accounts for burnout and low morale among so many college and university faculty? Is work life for professionals any more satisfying in the business world? What can academic leaders learn from business executives who work vigorously to reenergize their enterprises? Are corporate strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of work life applicable to improving satisfaction and productivity in our colleges and universities?

These concerns were addressed by a number of education leaders at a conference on faculty work life jointly sponsored by the New England Resource …

An Experimental Intervention Program With Potential Dropouts, Charles Warner Tankersley

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study is to incorporate several areas of intervention into one program with potential dropouts to determine if such a strategy would have a greater effect than intervention on a single variable. The subjects were 55 students in the 7th, 8th, or 9th grade, who were identified by the Ector County Independent School District as being at risk of dropping out of school. All subjects participated in academic remediation and counseling for 3 hours each school day for 7 weeks.
