The Influence Of Structure On The Function Of An Administrative Unit: Single Focus Academic Structure Or Multiple Focus Academic Structure Raising -- Some Of The Issues, Robert F. Ross, Philip Emmert
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article applies systems theory to examine how academic structure influences departmental functions within small universities, it contrasts single focus academic departments and multiple focus academic departments, assessing their effects on instruction, research, service, enrollment stability, credit hour production, faculty workload, budget flexibility, and administrative power. Through conceptual analysis and illustrative cases, this article argues that multiple focus configurations foster interdisciplinary curriculum, broaden student recruitment, and enable efficient resource allocation, while single focus units face constrained scheduling, program vulnerability, and duplicated governance tasks. It details how structure shapes faculty roles, advising practices, laboratory sharing, graduate program coordination, and external relations, …
The Relationship Of Structure To Function At The Community College Level: Saddleback College As Model, Lvnn K. Wells
The Relationship Of Structure To Function At The Community College Level: Saddleback College As Model, Lvnn K. Wells
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article analyzes how evolving governance arrangements in California public higher education shape operational decisions within a suburban community college speech communication department. Drawing on organizational analysis, it traces the effects of state reform legislation AB 1725, district campus hierarchies, and divisional affiliations on funding streams, credit hour generation, staffing ratios, course scheduling, and general education curriculum. The discussion shows that dependence on statewide full time equivalent student formulas and divisional budget priorities constrains capital purchases, promotes high enrollment basic courses, and limits elective offerings. Curriculum mandates requiring oral communication, writing, and critical thinking further complicate program design, while board …
The Value Of Fuzzy Lines, Stephen W. King
The Value Of Fuzzy Lines, Stephen W. King
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article develops an organizational scheme that explains how administrative structure influences the long term viability of communication programs in higher education. Drawing on organizational theory, it crosses composition and governance dimensions to build a two by two matrix that positions departments along continua from compositionally unified to compositionally diffused and from organizationally coherent to organizationally isolated. Through conceptual argument grounded in bureaucratic analysis, this article advances four propositions linking structural position to instructional capacity, research collaboration, external funding, resource allocation, political influence, and curricular flexibility. It contends that programs located in the unified coherent quadrant capitalize on economies of …
Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert
Planning Departmental Structure: Disciplinary Integrity Versus Pragmatic Opportunism, Lloyd Crisp, David Seibert
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article interrogates whether speech communication departments should pursue disciplinary coherence or embrace pragmatic opportunism while adapting to shifting institutional environments. Through case study analysis of structural evolution at a land grant university and a suburban research campus, it traces how size, articulation mandates, physical facilities, campus politics, curricular demand, public image, and faculty composition interact to shape organizational structure, program identity, governance, and resource allocation. A systems theory perspective yields ten planning criteria, showing that alignment with local contingencies rather than idealized disciplinary purity sustains enrollment stability, instructional quality, and faculty legitimacy. By framing communication studies as a socially …

The Reality Of Recruiting Minority And Women Faculty In Speech Communication: Some Considerations, Deborah Borisoff
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines structural and cultural obstacles that speech communication departments face when recruiting, hiring, and retaining minority and women faculty within U S higher education. Drawing on case based observations from multiple institutions, this article traces how pipeline shortages, geographic isolation, competitive salary markets, and implicit evaluative bias intersect with affirmative action mandates to shape faculty diversity outcomes. Discussion highlights the tension between legal compliance and attitudinal change, explores how tenure criteria emphasizing quantity over quality of research can disadvantage underrepresented scholars, and outlines strategies such as early mentoring, targeted doctoral recruitment, inclusive search processes, community integration support, and …
Quotas Or Goals: Fulfilling The Affirmative Action Mandate, Lea P. Stewart
Quotas Or Goals: Fulfilling The Affirmative Action Mandate, Lea P. Stewart
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article traces the evolution of affirmative action from labor legislation to current civil rights policy, illustrating how proactive recruitment rather than numerical quotas can strengthen faculty diversity in speech communication departments. Drawing on legal analysis, organizational theory, and practical experience at a large public university, this article argues that eliminating negative stereotypes requires intentional expansion of applicant pools, systematic networking with protected groups, and individualized mentoring during searches. It details procedures such as targeted advertising, personal outreach, and balanced evaluation criteria that attract qualified scholars from underrepresented communities without compromising academic rigor. By positioning affirmative action as a goal …

The Structure And Function Of A Community College Speech Communication Department, Francine Roussell Berkey
The Structure And Function Of A Community College Speech Communication Department, Francine Roussell Berkey
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article traces how organizational structure directs curriculum development, resource allocation, and staffing in a rural community college speech communication department. By situating the unit within state financing, divisional governance, and institutional committees, this article explains how structure shapes course scheduling, credit hour production, budget flexibility, and faculty workload. Structural analysis reveals that limited fiscal autonomy and small enrollment encourage service oriented curricula, reliance on adjunct instructors, and continuous adaptation to external program reviews. Functional outcomes are linked to broader institutional demands, while an evolutionary perspective highlights recent reorganization debates and their implications for departmental resilience. Findings provide communication administrators …
Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr
Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the belief that minority faculty underrepresentation can be remedied through quick fixes, showing instead that entrenched structural and cultural forces require sustained, systemic responses. Drawing on national doctorate statistics, affirmative action surveys, and illustrative programs at Duke, Bucknell, and Stanford, this article traces how shrinking doctoral pipelines, lucrative private sector opportunities, rising tuition, and inadequate precollege preparation erode the supply of prospective scholars of color. It further reveals that once hired, minority professors encounter disproportionate advising loads, heavy committee service, isolation, and tenure expectations emphasizing quantitative publication metrics. Employing perspectives from higher education administration, diversity research, organizational …
To Hell With The Forest: Find The Trees, Dan F. Hahn
To Hell With The Forest: Find The Trees, Dan F. Hahn
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques assumptions that simple market dynamics will resolve faculty diversity deficits, examining how structural and cultural factors in higher education continue to impede the recruitment, tenure, and retention of minority and women scholars. Using argumentative analysis situated in communication administration, this article outlines how impending retirements and a shrinking doctorate pipeline intersect with committee service overload, student mentoring demands, and evaluative bias to constrain publication productivity and tenure success. Discussion explores how research focusing on oppression can activate prejudice within personnel review, and how patriarchal norms amplify gender inequities. Administrative strategies are proposed, including delayed committee appointments, targeted …
Strategies For Recruiting Women And Minority Faculty In Communication, John J. Makav
Strategies For Recruiting Women And Minority Faculty In Communication, John J. Makav
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques passive affirmative action rhetoric and outlines a systematic recruitment program for diversifying communication faculties. Drawing on narrative evidence from multiple universities, it identifies structural barriers including limited doctoral pipelines, evaluative bias, and salary disparities that constrain minority and women hiring. The discussion advances eight recruitment strategies: forming cross level search teams, adopting flexible credential criteria, cultivating doctoral networks, advertising in targeted outlets, broadening evaluation beyond publications, promoting cultural inclusivity, budgeting competitive packages, and clarifying attainable tenure pathways. Emphasis is placed on institutional commitment, proactive attitude, and sustained innovation as levers for equity, organizational resilience, and academic excellence. …

A Study Of Learning Activities Of Selected Caregivers Of Alzheimer's Patients In East Tennessee, Jeannette G. Mclaughlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this study was to identify and describe the individual learning activities of caregivers of people with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and to develop an analytical description of the patterns of learning of these adults. An instrument was not available for use; therefore, a focused interview guide was developed. The interview guide was developed through consultation with several spouses or adult children caring for Alzheimer's patients, professionals in the health care field, and a review of the literature. The major analysis procedure for the study was the constant comparative method, an inductive method that has been used …
