Teaching Diversity For Adaptation And Change: A Case Study, Corinne Brion
Teaching Diversity For Adaptation And Change: A Case Study, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Preparing teachers and leaders to become culturally competent has become a global concern and a priority. To date, there has been little research con- ducted among school leaders regarding how new diversity knowledge is transferred to schools. Therefore, the purpose of the present qualitative study is to explore the extent to which future educational leaders enrolled in a graduate course regarding diversity are able to transfer the newly acquired knowledge to their professional lives and to understand what hinders and enhances their transfer of knowledge. Using the multidimen- sional model of learning transfer as a theoretical framework and analyz- ing …
Implicit Bias: An Unconscious Barrier To Family Engagement, Corinne Brion
Implicit Bias: An Unconscious Barrier To Family Engagement, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
This teaching case study illustrates the need to engage all parents in schools as they enhance the community’s cultural capital and cultural wealth. In order to engage parents from various races and ethnicities, educational leaders should understand the role implicit biases play in inhibiting equitable parent participation. In this case study, the author provides a framework to enhance parent engagement. The author also suggests that educational leaders use an instrument to assess their implicit biases and determine the biases held by parents as well. Finally, community cultural wealth is defined and an explanation is provided on how parent participation can …
Low-Fee Private Schools: Case Studies From Ghana, Corinne Brion
Low-Fee Private Schools: Case Studies From Ghana, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
This article focuses on Christian low-fee private schools (LFPSs) in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. This qualitative study uses a case study approach to longitudinally examine who these schools serve, why parents chose them, and what challenges the schools face. Findings reveal that parents choose Christian LFPSs for religious reasons and the quality of the education these schools provide. Other reasons include proximity, teacher and administrator quality, small class sizes, and extracurricular offerings. Challenges for these schools were financial and related to retaining teachers. This research is significant because Christian LFPSs have a role to play in helping Ghana’s …
Learning Transfer: The Missing Linkage To Effective Professional Development, Corinne Brion
Learning Transfer: The Missing Linkage To Effective Professional Development, Corinne Brion
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Professional development is an important element in improving teachers and leaders’ skills and abilities that will impact student academic achievement (Koonce, Pijanowski, Bengston & Lasater, 2019; Reeves, 2010). Too often, budgets are spent on professional development that yield little results (Speck & Knipe, 2005). Each district has its own focus for professional development depending on the needs of the school communities, the latest standardized test results, and the most recent policies. Despite the millions of dollars spent on professional development nationally, student learning outcomes continue to be stagnate or dwindle, discipline issues continue to skyrocket, and teacher moral plummets. This …

Purpose: The current study sought to explore principals’ perspectives of definitions and uses of mindfulness in their leadership and equity practices.
Design: The primary researcher observed and interviewed eleven school principals using qualitative methods during the course of this study.
Findings: Four themes developed from principals’ definitions of mindfulness: (1) awareness and attention, (2) present centeredness, (3) modeling listening and respect, and (4) decision-making processes. The principals’ actions also presented ethical mindedness in their equity pursuits and reflection in their general leadership practices, despite establishing the presence of a stigma around mindfulness.
Research limitations/implications: Beyond the limitations of qualitative …

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This essay describes the process one communication studies department used to develop a social media strategy. That process involved identifying the audiences to be reached, establishing goals and objectives, conducting an audit to identify possible message posts, and selecting posts to reach our goals and objectives. The resulting strategy involves posting messages two to three times per week targeted toward specific audiences and reflecting twelve objectives. A calendar was created to guide the posts. Future research will assess the effectiveness of the strategy.

Exploring The Intersection Of Spiritual And Sexual Orientation Identity Development In Lgbt Undergraduate Graduates Of Faith-Based Institutions, Lavina Seawright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the intersection and experiences of spiritual and sexual orientation identity development in LGBT graduates of faith-based institutions. Guided by Crenshaw's (1984), framework on intersectionality, this qualitative study was conducted through six in-depth interviews with LGBT graduates of faith-based institutions from Protestant faiths. Collected data was transcribed and analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) process for phenomenological data. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: commitment to religious affiliation; positive campus environment; negative campus environment; and identity congruence and dissonance. Additionally, participants were asked to identify their institutions as liberal, conservative, or neither liberal …

Online Education Implementation Processes And The Preparedness Of Mid-Level Enrollment Management Practitioners To Develop Quality Services For Fully Online Students, Chiquita Lane
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
According to Zawacki-Richter, Backer, and Vogt (2009), literature focusing on student services falls into three general categories: learning theories and attrition research, student needs and satisfaction, and models for best practices. Research addressing the specific training needs of student affairs practitioners responsible for implementing and managing student support services for online students is not a major area of focus (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). Therefore, unlike the faculty and technology subsystems, the student affairs subsystem has not become securely anchored in delivering services to fully online students (Crawley & Howe, 2016; Moore, 2013; Moore & Kearsley, 2012). The lack of research …
The Leadership Stories Of Students Of Color At Predominantly White Christian Institutions, Sharia Hays
The Leadership Stories Of Students Of Color At Predominantly White Christian Institutions, Sharia Hays
Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development
Leadership has been identified as an important component of higher education and the college student experience (Dugan, 2006; Komives, Dugan, & Owen, 2011; Shertzer & Schuh, 2004; St. John, Rowley, & Hu, 2009). Although there has been an in-crease in leadership initiatives across higher education, many institutions, specifically dominantly White Christian institutions have struggled to find ways to involve students of color in leadership. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, this study explored the leadership experiences of 11 students of color from 3 dominantly White Christian institutions (DWI). This article will provide a broad overview of the study while focusing on how …
Study Abroad For Low-Income Students: The Relationship Between Need-Based Grant Aid And Access To Education Abroad, Melissa Whatley, Ashley B. Clayton
Study Abroad For Low-Income Students: The Relationship Between Need-Based Grant Aid And Access To Education Abroad, Melissa Whatley, Ashley B. Clayton
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This study explores factors related to low-income students’ decisions to participate in study abroad while focusing specifically on the role of need-based grant aid in this decision-making process. Estimates account for systematic differences between students receiving and not receiving need-based grant aid using propensity score modeling (PSM) before disaggregating models by need-based grant aid status. Results indicate that need-based grant aid significantly increases a student’s probability of participating in study abroad. Additionally, disaggregated models show that the study abroad decisions of students receiving need-based grant aid differ significantly from those not receiving this aid, particularly when considering other forms of …
Education Tax Credits: A Different Trajectory For Federal Funding Of Higher Education And Remediation For Effectual Policymaking, Anna C. Bartel
Education Tax Credits: A Different Trajectory For Federal Funding Of Higher Education And Remediation For Effectual Policymaking, Anna C. Bartel
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Education tax credits provide federal financial aid to a wide expanse of American taxpayers; however, little research or analysis has been done on these costly programs. There has been little evidence of its link to college enrollment growth. This descriptive paper outlines the establishment of education tax credits, their original intent, and the lack of evidence of effectual federal policy over the past two decades. Thus, the purpose of this article is to assess how the federal government has reached an $18.9 billion annual expenditure for education tax credits with little to show in returns on investment. Further, this paper …

Exploring Idr: A Comparison Of Financial Situations And Behaviors Between Those In Traditional Student Loan Repayment And Those In Income-Driven Repayment, Daniel A. Collier
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This quantitative, exploratory study (N=266) examines: (1) financial differences between those enrolled in student-loan based Traditional and Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) schemes, (2) factors that link to IDR enrollment, and (3) whether IDR correlates to the likelihood of reporting to save zero dollars in savings and retirement and in being a homeowner. Descriptive tests indicated differences in loan and earnings-related measurements, and other financial differences, favoring those in traditional repayment. Logistic regression reporting Marginal Effects suggested enrollment in IDR correlated with student loan debt starting at $60,000 and upward (ME=0.41-0.59) and income (ME=0.52-0.36) - with lower-middle to middle-income earners being most …

Holistic Student Development In Higher Education: Perspectives And Practices Of Holistic Student Development At A Public California University, Francisca Ann Crutchfield
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Within traditional American public colleges and universities, there is an emphasis on academic student success within the structures and values of educational programs, and the lack of a holistic approach to higher education may be negatively impacting college student development and well-being. By balancing academic knowledge with other areas of knowledge, including a heightened sense of community and mental and emotional well-being, higher education can cultivate students who apply their skills with reduced stress, a sense of belonging, and freedom of expression. This qualitative phenomenological study seeks to identify characteristics, educational priorities, and programming approaches of university student service programs …

Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby
Book Proposal: Reimagining Higher Education: A Guide To Creating The Competent College Graduate, Molly Kerby
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
Given the climate of distrust, colleges and universities are examining strategies to enable them to remain relevant. Efforts to answer the recent outcry for productive, effective, and evidencedbased outcomes include adapting curricula and degree programs to better prepare graduates for employment. Competency-based education (CBE) programs are at the forefront of these approaches. Although not a new concept, CBE has shifted from its vocational training roots to its current attention on student results. The acquisition of competence requires an engaged learner who practices self-reflection (Dreyfus, 2004). Albanese, et al. (2008) suggest competencies should be outcome focused, emphasize applied-learning, and be measurable. …

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Intergenerational poverty is a problem of immense concern within the African American community, where approximately 32% of children under the age of 18 reside in impoverished conditions. Although acquisition of a college degree is the sole determining factor most influential for social mobility of families in the lowest income bracket, only 10.13% of total degrees conferred in 2015-2016 were to African American students. Additionally, being first-generation and low-income, stressors are intensified and perpetuate cessation of enrollment in postsecondary studies. Utilizing a non-randomized sample, a causal comparative/quasi experimental analysis was conducted to evaluate whether African Americans, or students from low-income and …

Becoming Internationalized: Faculty Directors Of International Programs At Universities In Japan, Robert Joseph Schalkoff Ii
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Internationalization is a key component in the strategic visions of universities worldwide. Japanese universities are no exception. The strategic internationalization or Kokusaika of universities in Japan is led at the national level by the central government. Faculty members, in particular those charged with campus internationalization, are the drivers of internationalization at the institutional level. These faculty members are highly internationalized themselves. However, little is known about how faculty members at Japanese universities become internationalized. Research on the paths they take, what factors play a role in the process of internationalization, and what influence their internationalization has on the institutions they …

Institutional Responses To Events Challenging Campus Climates: Examining The Power In Language, Crystal Garcia, Benjamin Arnberg, Jessica Weise, Marit Winborn
Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications
This qualitative study explored administrative responses to local and sociopolitical events challenging campus climates at public research universities. Using critical discourse analysis, we examined the use of language as a form of power in publicly available documents addressing campus climate for diversity and inclusion at 31 U.S. institutions. Findings center 3 themes: underlying power in determining what to address; the power of language in perpetuating or deconstructing power, privilege, and oppression; and the distinction between espousing and enacting commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

“A Victim/Survivor Needs Agency”: Sexual Assault Survivors’ Perceptions Of University Mandatory Reporting Policies, Kathryn J. Holland, Allison E. Cipriano, T. Zachary Huit
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
In institutions of higher education, mandatory reporting policies require certain employees to report students’ sexual assault disclosures to university officials, even if the student does not want to report. It is commonly assumed that these policies will benefit survivors, but there is a paucity of research to substantiate this assumption. The current study examined college sexual assault survivors’ perceptions of mandatory reporting policies, including three specific policy approaches (Universal, Selective, Student-Directed). Interviews were conducted with 40 college sexual assault survivors and thematic analysis was used to analyze these data. Results found that the mandatory reporting policy approaches that survivors prefer, …
