It was the purpose of this study (1) to survey the importance of the role of the elementary principal in improvement of instruction, (2) to make a limited study of professional literature, in order to discover ways and means by which the elementary principal provides more effective supervisory services, (3) to present a proposed program for improving the supervisory services of the principal in Central School which would result in an improvement in instruction, and (4) to conclude the study with selected summarizing statements.

It was the purpose of this study (1) to review literature regarding new trends in the elementary arithmetic program; (2) to investigate the role of the elementary school principal in administration of Cuisenaire materials; and (3) to investigate the current elementary arithmetic programs in the Highline School District #401 and, where evidence was available, in other school districts using Cuisenaire materials. The principal purpose of this study was to gather information showing the effects of non-promotion on the achievement of those children, currently enrolled in the Sunnyside Public School District, who had been retained in the first grade. The purpose of the study was (1.) to determine the primary reasons given by the teacher for effecting the retention; (2) to show the progress of each of these children in reading and, in some cases, in arithmetic and spelling during his subsequent elementary school years.

There have been many organizational plans, including the departmental, intended to improve the "self-contained classroom" so as to increase the child's intellectual development without hindering his personal-social development. It may be that one or more of the new plans will improve the self-contained classroom. Research evidence, not plain argument, must be relied upon to provide the answers needed. There is very little research evidence to support the claims for any elementary school plan, the self-contained classroom plan not excepted.

Emphasis was focused on problems the principal, staff, students, and parents will encounter in setting up this program.
