The purpose of this study was to analyze the portrayal of American Indian characters found in children’s fictional literature. It sought to determine the kinds of characteristics most commonly attributed to American Indians in children’s stories; wether or not misinformation was present; wether or not stereotypes were used; and whether or not there were any changes in characterizations related to time periods. Differences in portrayals by Indian and non-Indian authors and by experienced and less experiences authors were also investigated.

The purpose of this study was four-fold: (1) to extend the adult based procedure employed in the study of levels of processing in memory to the developmentally young; (2) to determine whether the levels of processing effect manifests itself in children as young as those in first grade; (3) to study the development of the dynamic memory system unencumbered by developmentally influenced strategies in the areas of metamemory, encoding, organization and storage, and retrieval; and (4) to study the developmental nature of encoding time as a further check in the validation of the adult levels of processing procedure.

The primary objectives of this study were: (1) to determine program cost indices for early childhood education, grades 1 through 3, grades 7 through 9, and grades 10 through 12 educational programs; and (2) to compare the program cost indices developed in this study to program cost indices established in New Mexico law for the purpose of determining the accuracy of those legal indices.

The required data for the study were organized into three broad categories: pupil-accounting, personnel accounting, and actual operational expenditures by each of the educational programs being studied.

The 1974 New Mexico State Legislature enacted House Bill 85 which consisted of a distribution plan to allocate state monies for education on a cost index basis. This distribution plan recognized the fact that different types of education require different expenditures. Distribu­tional as well as taxpayer equity are characteristic of this formula, two features lacking in previous formulas.

A mail questionnaire was developed and submitted to ail of Kentucky's 189 public school superintendents. This study was concerned with determining the effectiveness of four strategies, as measured by posttest scores, Exemplification­Characterization, Characterization-Exemplification, Exemplification­Characterization-Exemplification, and Characterization-Exemplification­Characterization, for teaching toward conjunctive, disjunctive, and relational concepts. Differences in effectiveness of the four strategies for high and low achievers in mathematics were also studied.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of assertive training with short-term psychiatric patients. The sample consisted of 36 subjects--18 males and 18 females--who were hospitalized patients at the Bernalillo County Mental Health Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patients were asked to participate in the study upon admission, and were randomly assigned to groups of six to either of two control conditions or to an assertive training condition. The problem addressed in this dissertation is whether summer vacation accounts for more of the reading-achievement gap between minority and non-minority children than does the school year. A positive finding would support the compensatory approach to minority education; it would indicate that school can close the gap between minority and non-minority children. The relationship of socio-cultural variables to selected personality variables was examined utilizing a sample of 141 Pueblo adolescent boys and girls from grade 7 through 12 with a mean age of 14. 9. Each subject was administered the 16PF and the TIB and predictions were made about scores and scoring distributions based on the Pueblo socio-cultural system as described in the anthropological literature. With a few exceptions the sample mean scores and score distributions were not significantly different from those of the norm groups of the tests utilized. It was hypothesized that reading strategies used by children from Spanish-speaking backgrounds reading in English are influenced by the facility in English of those children. Maturational levels of English structures used by two such children, one estimated by the teacher to be reading above grade level and one estimated by the teacher to be reading below grade level, were measured by transformational analysis. The use and effectiveness of reading strategies including sound/graphic systems, grammar, and meaning were determined for each reader. The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop a procedure for categorizing statewide higher education funding formulas; (2) to use that procedure to categorize the statewide funding formulas utilized by fifteen selected states; (3) to simulate the implementation of at least one statewide funding formula from each category using 1972-73 New Mexico data; and (4) to develop several alternative model funding formulas for financing higher education in New Mexico.
