A Comparison Of The Admission Criteria Of Kentucky's Junior Colleges, Janet Walters

Students intending to enter a Junior College in Kentucky can learn of the admission requirements from the catalog published by that college. However, admission requirements vary between colleges. Each admission requirement of Kentucky's Junior Colleges was ranked in terms of its importance to the admission process by admission counselors. It was found that the high school transcript was felt by a majority of the admission counselors to be the most important admission requirement presently used. The partial high school transcript and recommendation form or letter were deemed to be the least important criteria. The results of the evaluation further indicated …

The problem is to devise for institutions of higher learning a model policy regarding grades and grading practices, specifically with respect to (1) grade appeal procedures, including instructor rights and student rights; (2) methods of determining grades; (3) definitions of grades; (4) responsibility for assigning grades; and (5) cheating regulations insofar as they affect grading policies. A model policy should assist colleges and universities in achieving conformity with recent court decisions and avoiding the many problems associated with litigation. At the same time, institutions should then be able to maintain their academic standards and provide academic fairness for all students. …

A new climate of teaching has been established in which English teachers must be able to demonstrate those teacher behaviors, charac­teristics and qualifications that foster high quality instruction in the classroom.

The 1976 National Council of Teachers of English's (NCTE) Committee on Teacher Preparation and Certification published a statement on "Qualifications Needed by Teachers of English." These qualifications, based on an earlier set of Guidelines in 1967, suggested desirable competencies for teachers of English. This study investigated two instances of organizational crisis occurring within a voluntary professional organization. The central research task was twofold: (1) to reconstruct accurately the historical events which preceded and followed two unsuccessful strike bids by a voluntary teachers' organization; and, (2) to develop a theoretical explanation which would account for the antecedents and consequences of the crises which inevitably surfaced after the strike bid defeat. Con­cepts drawn primarily from the organizational crisis and conflict literature provided the general conceptual orientation.

This study is a replication with modifications of the research of Bussis, Chittenden, and Amarel (1976) to determine if teachers' frames of reference concerning underlying curriculum constructs can be identified and classified as being broad, middle-range, or narrow. The two modifications are (1) a different population, and (2) use of the Physical Setting and Materials subsection of the work of Bussis and associates, rather than their total Teacher Interview. Since identifying and classifying teachers' frames of reference constitute a relatively new approach in education, this study is of a descriptive nature. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of a cognitive-developmental moral discussion course on the moral reasoning of pre-student teachers as measured by scores on the Defining Issues Test. The specific objective of the course was to facilitate the advancement to postconventional (principled) thinking.

The population for the study consisted of 63 students enrolled in the pre-student teacher program at the University of New Mexico. From this population, 13 pre-student teacher volunteers became the experimental group. Those who did not volunteer became the control group.

This was a study of three variables and their effect on two groups of students who dropped out of school during the tenth grade. One group had attended three full years of junior high school in Owensboro while the other group had attended three full years of middle school in Owensboro. The study also reviewed the programs and emphases of the junior high school and the middle school.

The students were compared on mean cumulative grade point average, mean percentage of absenteeism, and incidence of dropout during the tenth grade.

The present study of Navajo aspect has two related obJectives: (a) to define an aspect inventory for Navajo, and (b) to establish principled bases for choices made.

The problem is approached semantically and structurally. Semantically (chapter 1) the most fundamental expression of aspect is some form of the opposition between a point and a line temporally. Structurally there are two verbal systems that carry such information. These are given different labels (tense, aspect), but both convey aspect semantically.

American public schools have been criticized for fail­ing to meet the needs of children from minority groups. The cultural heritage of these children is seen as an important factor in differential achievement in the public schools. It has been postulated that students and adults from different cultural groups would hold different expectations for teachers, and this would hinder the chances of minority students to benefit from Anglo-oriented schools. However, there is little empirical evidence regarding expectations teacher role behavior held by minority students or teachers.

The purpose of the study was to determine if first grade students could gain control of the handwriting skill with greater perfection of letter formation through the simplified method devised by the investigator than through

a combination of commercial handwriting programs used by the control group. Participating in the program were forty-eight first-grade students from a rural school in New Mexico. No significant difference resulted between the experimental handwriting program emphasizing visual perception and the control handwriting program with little emphasis on visual perception.
