THE FIVE SENSES is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried,how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. This project is concerned with the importance of parental involvement in children learning to read. Research shows children who view reading as an important and valuable process develop a more positive attitude toward learning to read. Children involved in reading activities at home learn to read earlier and have improved comprehension over children who have no experiences reading in the home. Parent involvement can take place in the home or at school as classroom volunteers. This project contains a volunteer handbook for parents and teachers. The purpose of this thesis was to trace the development of The Children's House at Mankato State University from its establishment in 1972 to the close of the 1981-82 school year. This study provided historical data to document the development and progress of the program through a combination of sources including The Children's House files, University records, personal files and recollections of the writer, and personal interviews with key persons in the history of the program. The study provided data and descriptions in regard to program philosophy, design and curriculum, funding, staffing and facilities. A review of the literature provided …

The purpose of this study is to present a descriptive sketch of the nursery schools conducted at Western Kentucky Teachers College in such a manner that some results of the work may be shown.
