The stories of three alaka‘i wahine (Native Hawaiian women leaders) who are involved with cultural and linguistic early education environments that promote family and child interaction are featured here. Through interviews and interactions their stories and work are highlighted for stakeholders to glean from lessons they have learned. This work is framed through the lens of (re)imagining educational systems for Native Hawaiian children to experience education that is congruent with their heritage, their family, and their cultural ways of being. Utilization Of Empathy As A Learning Tool Among Educators At Kate Bond Elementary, Heather Demarest

This qualitative research study explores the opinions and experiences of a group of six educators at Kate Bond Elementary in Memphis, Tennessee. This research examines how these educators utilize empathy as a teaching tool, how they choose to implement social-emotional learning into their classrooms, and how their own educational histories impact their current teaching practices. Data collection spanned four weeks and consisted of six interviews. The findings suggest that empathy not only plays a role in education but is, for this group of educators, inseparable from the academic learning they facilitate in their classrooms. Although classroom-based coursework and clinical education activities in speech-language pathology graduate programs strive to link education to relevant practice, gaps persist. Parent-implemented intervention is an evidence-based practice mandated by federal law in early intervention; however, speech-language pathology graduate programs do not provide students with ample opportunities to gain relevant experience. Outcomes from two research studies supported revising classroom and clinical education, increasing educational relevance and professional preparation for students. A qualitative study with focus groups identified key implementation needs that led to the addition of role play simulation in the classroom. Using Early Childhood Literacy Interventions To Support Healthy Development In At-Risk Students, Patrick Gustafson

This Capstone research study investigated ways early childhood literacy interventions can support healthy development in at-risk students. Children entered kindergarten at a wide range of literacy skill levels, and skill gaps could persist for years. Students who failed to read proficiently by third grade are less likely to finish high school. Research showed the potential for targeted early literacy interventions to positively impact outcomes for at-risk students. Interventions implemented by families, teachers, and trained volunteers all made a positive impact on academic achievement. Fidelity played an important role in effective intervention implementation, though challenges exist in real-world early childhood classrooms. …

Utilizing a mixed method approach this research study investigated the effects of small group instruction on the learning of diverse learners. Informed by a preliminary literature review that supports the use of small-group instruction, the researcher conducted a small-scale action research project to focus on three diverse learners in a 1st-grade classroom over four weeks. One of the findings of this project shows that small group instruction helps promote social and emotional skills as students feel more comfortable interacting with peers in a small group rather than in a whole group. In my capstone project, I incorporated multiple strategies that supported students’ learning of and engagement with lessons on three digraphs: sh, th, and ch. My objective was not to teach to mastery, but instead to expose students to higher level literacy concepts and build their background knowledge for future lessons. Based on student artifacts, students gained multiple opportunities for exposure and practice of reading and writing words with digraphs. The assessment data does not directly support an improvement in student performance with independent writing. The continuously low college retention and low degree attainment of African American and Hispanic men is a generational and decades-long hindrance to the elevation of these marginalized communities in the United States and the state of Texas. In Texas, the last 3 years’ worth of data has proven college-readiness rates of African American and Hispanic college students were significantly lower by large margins than White students in English language arts, math, and both subjects by large margins. Understanding what a dual immersion program is and knowing the different models within the program allow parents to select which program is best suited for their students. This phenomenological study explores how play-based preschool educators experienced and re-imagined play and play-based learning throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six teachers and three administrators from three private Midwest play-based institutions. This study uncovers preschool educators’ experiences of engaging in play-based learning throughout the different phases of the pandemic and delves into the issues and challenges of online learning and the subsequent return to the classroom. Results show that despite pedagogical adjustments and limitations brought about by online learning modalities and pandemic related restrictions, the nature of play remains unchanged and continues to be vital to …

Expressive arts professional Katrina Plato follows with a couple of her own poems and then work by clients in response to the book’s prompts.
