This is a study of a math curriculum designed for a third grade class in a departmentalized setting. The children in the class were below average in math skills for this school and had little or no enjoyment from math. This paper shows the methods used to give the children a more positive outlook towards math while also building their skills. The paper includes descriptions of games and extensive samples of work sheets used.

A Training Program For Use With Aides And Volunteers In A Middle School Remedial Reading And Language Arts Program, Jeanette Johnson

This project consists of three parts. Chapter 1 establishes the need for more concentrated teaching of poor readers among school children and suggests volunteer tutors as a possible source of help. Chapter 2 examines the history of tutoring by non-professionals and concludes that volunteers can indeed be effective tutors, but that appropriate training is a crucial factor. Chapter 3, the main part of the project, presents a set of ten training modules each consisting of taped instructions and accompanying printed material. The script for each tape is included in this paper.

This paper concerns itself with the preparation for the development of a children's hands-on museum. Included is a definition of such a museum, a rationale for this type of museum, organizational considerations of a community museum, four exhibits intended to stimulate and guide children's cognitive processes, and a brief summation. The rationale for this children's museum is derived primarily from Piaget's theory of cognitive developmental psychology. Thus, the exhibits are exemplars of Piagetian curriculum. The organization section emphasizes Guthe's philosophy concerning museum organization.

Using social studies as the core of the curriculum is an effective educational framework for five and six year olds. When this curriculum starts with the children's life experiences and goes on to study some aspect of their community or environment, children can begin to understand the interconnectedness of the adult world. Young children feel the excitement of learning when they immerse themselves in a study; they find that learning can be a vital process related to their needs and experiences, rather than a dry transfer of skills and pre-existing bodies of knowledge.

Open workshop education offers help, time and facilities where a teacher can be involved with learning concepts using a combination of materials and skills. The problem of the investigation concerned itself with the effect of preschool experiences on the achievement of the kindergarten children enrolled in the 1971-1972 Follow Through Program in Waterloo, Iowa, which used the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, model of individually prescribed instruction. The study explored the effects of preschool experience upon kindergarten males and females as contrasted to the male and female kindergarten children without preschool experience.

Comparison Of Achievement And Cost Of Achievement Of Remedial Reading Students Using Two Different Programs, David Marlin Pocock

This paper presents a study of two different remedial reading programs on the eighth and ninth grade levels. The control group (eight grade) used various types of reading machines for classroom instruction. The experimental group (ninth grade) used a basic phonetic approach to the teaching of reading without the use of reading machines. Evaluation of the groups showed a significant difference in student grade level gain and cost of each program per student.

Recommendations included the careful spending of money on remedial programs which do not produce better results than less expensive programs, and suggestions for additional research.

It was the purpose of this study to determine if there is a relationship between concentrated decoding instruction and comprehension growth of third grade pupils.
