Rethink The Aptitude Excuse, David E. Drew Aug 1996

Rethink The Aptitude Excuse, David E. Drew

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The achievement problems in U.S. schools can be seen clearly at our border. Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, are about a mile apart, separated by the Rio Grande. For years, one of my former doctoral students was on the faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso and directed the remedial center. Students who were having trouble in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, came to the center for tutoring by undergraduates and graduate students. In reviewing who was hired by the center over a number of years, she observed that Americans were rarely hired to tutor in …

Critical Literacy And Postcolonial Praxis: A Freirian Perspective, Peter Mclaren Oct 1992

Critical Literacy And Postcolonial Praxis: A Freirian Perspective, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"This essay examines the relationship among language, experience, and historical agency. It does so in the context of recent work in critical literacy and critical pedagogy. My discussion takes its bearings from the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, described in a recent interview with Carlos Alberto Torres as "the prime 'animateur' for pedagogical innovation and change in the second half of this century" (12). In part this essay stands as a poststructuralist and postcolonialist rereading of Freire that, while to a certain extent "reinventing" his work in light of perspectives selectively culled from contemporary social theory, attempts to remain …

After dedicating 26 years of his life to the creation of Nova University — 22 of them as president — Dr. Abraham S. Fischler stepped down from Nova University, having served since 1970. But his inspiration and guidance date from 1966, the year he joined the University as dean of graduate studies.

Dr. Fischler's commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and educational excellence is evident from his distinguished career, which includes professorships at the University of California at Berkeley and the Graduate School of Education of Harvard University. He also has taught science at the secondary school level.

He earned …

The Search For Nova University: An Essay On Its First Twenty-Five Years 1964-1989, Stephen L. Goldstein Jan 1989

The Search For Nova University: An Essay On Its First Twenty-Five Years 1964-1989, Stephen L. Goldstein

NSU Books and Book Chapters

Acknowledgement

Twenty-five years in the life of a university is a short period of time. Yet, in its first twenty-five years, Nova University has been able to respond to major changes in American society. After Sputnik was launched in 1957, our government and our educational system placed a high priority on science and technology. President Kennedy declared that we would place a man on the moon within a decade.

Nova University of Advanced Technology was conceived in response to the national agenda. In the mid-1960s, President Johnson launched the Great Society, which began to take effect in the late 1960s …

The Effect Of Instructional Gaming Upon Absenteeism: The First Step, Layman E. Allen, Dana B. Martin

Other Publications

In assessing'an experimental instructional gaming program in seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics at Pelham Middle School, Detroit, MI, absenteeism was taken as the most pervasive and pragmatic measure of student attitudes toward the learning environmentof the mathematics classroom. The experimental learning environment contained three major elements in addition to regular mathematics instruction: EQUATIONS, a problem-generating type of game; a twice-a-week tournament arranged to award reinforcements frequently and equally among the participants as well as to individualize the learning experience foreach student; and the organization of classes into teams designed to elicit cooperation. Experimental and control classes were taught by the same …
