Learning Experiences Of Pre-Service Teachers And The Lecturer’S Role In A Qualitative Research Methods Course, Liora Nutov

The Qualitative Report

Instructors involved in teacher education believe that the language and skills required for qualitative research methods (QRM) provide teachers with the expertise needed for lifelong learning. In this research, I explore the learning experiences of pre-service teachers in a QRM course and examine the role of the lecturer in designing these experiences. I chose the design research method (Kali, Levin-Peled, & Dori, 2009; Wang & Hannafin, 2005) and collected data from 71 students over three academic years. Data analysis uncovered three types of student experiences: motivation for learning, mediation of learning, and meaningful learning – all of which are supported …

Lxd: Ten Critical Differences Between Lx And Ux, Jeffrey Bergin

The Emerging Learning Design Journal

The term “Learner Experience Design” is beginning to gain currency. Yet, there is little agreement over what that term means. Is it just user experience design for learners? In my opinion, LX design differs from UX design in ten important ways. Taken together, these differences make the job of learning experience designers quite distinct from the job of user experience designers.

Toward Formalizing Teleportation Of Pedagogical Artificial Agents, John Angel, Naveen S. Govindarajulu, Selmer Bringsjord

The Emerging Learning Design Journal

Our paradigm for the use of artificial agents to teach requires among other things that they persist through time in their interaction with human students, in such a way that they “teleport” or “migrate” from an embodiment at one time t to a different embodiment at later time t'. In this short paper, we report on initial steps toward the formalization of such teleportation, in order to enable an overseeing AI system to establish, mechanically, and verifiably, that the human students in question will likely believe that the very same artificial agent has persisted across …

Balancing Prescriptiveness And Flexibility In The School Curriculum, Jen Jackson

NSW Curriculum Review

This paper is one of three research ‘backgrounders’ to support the 2018–19 review of the New South Wales (NSW) curriculum. It focuses on the issue of prescriptiveness or flexibility in curriculum, which has been identified as an area of interest in the review. The Terms of Reference require the review to consider the appropriate scope for school community choices about content. Given that the NSW curriculum is characterised by a relatively high level of prescriptiveness, this is understood as involving consideration of whether a more flexible approach may be desirable. This paper therefore seeks to provide an evidence base, based …

In this mixed methods study, qualitative data from teacher interviews were collected and merged with quantitative …

Where Do We Go From Here? Culturally Responsive Teaching And Literacy Among African American Males, Denise Evelyn Cyrus Jan 2019

Where Do We Go From Here? Culturally Responsive Teaching And Literacy Among African American Males, Denise Evelyn Cyrus

Education Dissertations and Projects

Literacy skills impact academic achievement for school-aged children and almost every facet of modern day life thereafter. Low literacy achievement affects college acceptance, college completion, employment, housing, and socioeconomic status to name a few (Ford & Moore, 2013). Regrettably, the literacy skills gap between Black and White students in America has remained virtually the same for the past 20 years. Factors such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, and teacher quality contribute to the sustainability of literacy gaps. Scholars such as Ladson-Billings (1995a), Gay (2010), and Hammond (2015) endorse the use of culturally responsive pedagogy as an approach to reduce achievement …

Dungeon Classroom Guide: Using Tabletop Role-Playing Games In The Classroom, Gannon Youakim Jan 2019

Dungeon Classroom Guide: Using Tabletop Role-Playing Games In The Classroom, Gannon Youakim

Honors Capstone Projects

I’m writing this booklet to show educators why tabletop role-playing games are a useful academic tool.

I have loved teaching and tabletop role-playing games for a long time. I firmly believe they are both magical. As I’ve learned and experienced more of teaching and role-playing, I’ve come to discover their synergies. The goal of a classroom is to gather minds and learn through experience. The goal of a tabletop role-playing games is to gather minds and learn through experience. At first glance, the types of learning associated between the two don't seem to synchronize. Classrooms are formal; games are informal. …

Factors That Influence The Implementation Of Restorative Practices In An Urban District: The Role Of Forgiveness And Endorsement, Wanda L. Lash

ETD Archive

In spite of extant research on the impact of zero-tolerance policies on racial disparity and negative academic outcomes, exclusionary discipline still abounds, which urges the need for alternatives to this policy. Current research suggests approaches like restorative justice and restorative practices as a promising alternative to zero-tolerance policies where, through its use, students can find acceptance for who they are and learn how to handle conflict, accept responsibility, repair relationships, exercise forgiveness, and belong to a community. The specific problem becomes identifying the factors that make implementation of restorative justice programs in the educational setting impactful. The purpose of this …

Initiating Change: An Investigation Of Elementary Educators' Perspectives For Implementing Stem Innovation, Jodie Leean Witherspoon Jan 2019

Initiating Change: An Investigation Of Elementary Educators' Perspectives For Implementing Stem Innovation, Jodie Leean Witherspoon

Education Dissertations and Projects

STEM education has become a preferred curriculum design for integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics into k-12 instruction (Meyrick, 2011). Nonetheless, many elementary schools do not utilize the curriculum design and the benefits of learning it may provide, even though elementary educators understand the importance of science literacy starting in early childhood (Cafarella, McCulloch, & Bell, 2017; Worth, 2010). For many educators, the traditional instruction received as a child was instruction in isolation. This vision has led educators themselves to teach in isolation. Research has shown educators had little or no direction in how to switch their instructional practices from …
