Master of Education Program Theses

This action research study investigated the effects of a social emotional learning plan implemented in a third grade classroom at a Christian school in an urban setting. Participants were seventy three third grade students. These students participated in a pre and post survey to determine the difference a social emotional learning plan may have on student behavior. The experimental group participated in five embedded social emotional lesson plans as well as weekly class meetings for a six-week period. The results of this study suggest that a social emotional learning plan benefits students in a behavioral way.

Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Kramer Apr 2017

Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Mathematics Achievement, Laura Kramer

Master of Education Program Theses

This action research project examined the relationship between parenting styles and mathematics achievement for middle school students at a small Christian school in the Midwestern United States. The participants were 22 fifth through eighth grade students and their parents. Students and their parents completed surveys measuring the parenting dimensions of demandingness and responsiveness, which were used to determine the overall parenting style in the home. Parenting styles determined by the surveys were compared to mathematics scores from the students’ most recent achievement test. The study results indicate that an authoritative parenting style does not necessarily correlate with higher mathematics achievement …

Parent Support Groups And Well-Being: Investigating The Benefits Of Parent Support Groups For Families Of Children With Special Needs, Rachel Zeutenhorst Apr 2017

Parent Support Groups And Well-Being: Investigating The Benefits Of Parent Support Groups For Families Of Children With Special Needs, Rachel Zeutenhorst

Master of Education Program Theses

This qualitative research study seeks to identify if peer support groups for parents with children who have disabilities are beneficial to the parents’ physical and emotional well-being. Previous literature has shown that parents of children with disabilities feel more knowledgeable, accepted, and empowered when they are able to share their successes and struggles with parents who are in similar situations. Furthermore, the literature also shows that when parents are actively involved with their child’s school, other parents, and their community, their children earn higher grades, attend school more often, have better social skills, and are more likely to attend college …

An Investigation Of Accounting Education To Help Students Improve Important Job Skills, Alec Schuberth Apr 2017

An Investigation Of Accounting Education To Help Students Improve Important Job Skills, Alec Schuberth

Honors Projects in Accounting

Upon graduation, many college students embark on their professional careers in accounting. These graduates have completed their degree and moved to their new, exciting, and challenging jobs; but have these corporations recently expressed satisfaction with the performance of these young employees? Some studies suggest that many executives do not think that their new employees have developed the skills needed to be successful in today’s competitive business landscape. This project extends the literature by examining professional development in college graduates and applying it within the context of accounting education in college and universities nationwide. Overall, this project aims to investigate why …

Retelling The Education Story: Bringing "Cool" To School Using Progressivism, Faisal Lalani Apr 2017

Retelling The Education Story: Bringing "Cool" To School Using Progressivism, Faisal Lalani

Capstone Collection

Nepal’s education system is littered with flaws: teachers are underpaid and untrained, development of the curriculum is neglected, and the number of students failing examinations is higher than the number of those who pass. These problems are consistent throughout the country and as a result, the system that supposedly aims to produce future scientists, engineers, and leaders instead churns out citizens and leaders that repeat the mistakes of past generations. In the past, there has been no movement or reform planned for the low quality of schooling. However, different schools and organizations scattered throughout the country are attempting to do …

Accounting For Ethics: Emphasis On Ethics Education In Us Collegiate Business Curricula, Sarah Stokowski Apr 2017

Accounting For Ethics: Emphasis On Ethics Education In Us Collegiate Business Curricula, Sarah Stokowski

Honors Projects in Accounting

The accounting field holds a background in ethical understanding to be of great importance. The purpose of this project was to investigate the extent to which ethics education is emphasized and implemented within the business, and specifically accounting, curricula of US collegiate level institutions. Course curricula from a sample of 445 AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited business programs in the US were examined for their emphasis on ethics education. This emphasis was quantified through a novel measurement, the Ethics Education Index, which is an originally constructed weighted measure of the number of stand-alone courses dealing with …

Math Anxiety And Assessment Strategies, Ronald Vis Apr 2017

Math Anxiety And Assessment Strategies, Ronald Vis

Master of Education Program Theses

This action research study investigated the connection between student choice and the levels of math anxiety exhibited in Geometry students at a Christian high school in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. The participants were 38 ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students separated in three sections of Geometry. This study was conducted to see if providing choice would effectively combat the perceived stress and anxiety associated with math classes. Students were offered a choice of review projects that would be used to prepare them for an upcoming test. No other changes were made in the classroom. Class presentations, discussions, and assessments …

A Close Look At Learning Styles, Joanna Haswell Apr 2017

A Close Look At Learning Styles, Joanna Haswell

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

The term “learning style” refers to the idea that each student learns in his or her own way. More specifically, a learning style is the preferential way that a student is able to learn, retain, and apply the information that they are learning. In order to bring about success in anything that one does, it is important to understand learning styles, the history of them, their evolution, and how research on them can help one better understand how he or she learns.

Rapid Review Of Curriculum 2013 And Textbooks, Kathryn Moyle, Anita Rampal, Dewi Rochsantiningsih, K Kristiandi

Curriculum development and review

Indonesia wants to improve the quality of students’ learning outcomes as a matter of urgency. One strategy being used to achieve this objective, is to improve the national curriculum, Curriculum 2013. The theoretical basis underpinning Curriculum 2013 has been informed by promising practices from across several countries, that have placed an emphasis on fostering student-centred and enquiry-based learning, and the development of ‘21st century skills’. This Rapid Review of Curriculum and Textbooks 2013 was undertaken at the request of Ministry of Education and Culture (MoEC), to examine recent curriculum reforms and implementation strategies used in Indonesia, in order for MoEC …

The Rise Framework: Using Learning Analytics To Automatically Identify Open Educational Resources For Continuous Improvement, Robert Bodily, Rob Nyland, David Wiley Apr 2017

The Rise Framework: Using Learning Analytics To Automatically Identify Open Educational Resources For Continuous Improvement, Robert Bodily, Rob Nyland, David Wiley

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

The RISE (Resource Inspection, Selection, and Enhancement) Framework is a framework supporting the continuous improvement of open educational resources (OER). The framework is an automated process that identifies learning resources that should be evaluated and either eliminated or improved. This is particularly useful in OER contexts where the copyright permissions of resources allow for remixing, editing, and improving content. The RISE Framework presents a scatterplot with resource usage on the x-axis and grade on the assessments associated with that resource on the y-axis. This scatterplot is broken down into four different quadrants (the mean of each variable being the origin) …

Critical Analysis Of The Educational Success Of African Immigrants And African Americans In The U.S., Regina J. Giraldo-Garcia, Joshua G. Bagaka's Apr 2017

Critical Analysis Of The Educational Success Of African Immigrants And African Americans In The U.S., Regina J. Giraldo-Garcia, Joshua G. Bagaka's

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

Using the cultural-ecological and culturally relevant theory as the theoretical overarching framework, this study works to quantify the high school achievement gap in mathematics and reading IRT scores between immigrants and U.S.-born black minorities as well as between these students and whites. Based on a nationally representative sample of 1,669 black and 8,682 white students from the NCES Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, a hierarchical linear regression model confirmed that the achievement in mathematics and reading was statistically significant and higher for voluntary compared to involuntary black minorities, but with a small effect size of about one-tenth of a standard …

Slaves, Coloni, And Status Confusion In The Late Roman Empire, Hannah Basta Apr 2017

Slaves, Coloni, And Status Confusion In The Late Roman Empire, Hannah Basta

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

From the dawn of the Roman Empire, slavery played a major and essential role in Roman society. While slavery never completely disappeared from ancient Roman society, its position in the Roman economy shifted at the beginning of the period called Late Antiquity (14 CE–500 CE). At this time, the slave system of the Roman world adjusted to a new category of labor. Overall, the numbers of slaves declined, an event that historian Ramsey MacMullen, drawing from legal debates and legislation of the period, attributes to the accumulation of debt and poverty among Roman citizens in the third century CE. One …

Of Groomers And Tour Guides: The Role Of Writing In The Fellowships Office, Leslie Bickford

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

When Lia Rushton asserts that “it takes a village to raise a fellowship recipient,” she accurately describes the culture of mentoring and undergraduate research at Winthrop University, where often faculty not only refer students to my office but also email or call me to make sure I plan to seek them out. In one such recent referral, a colleague used a term I’ve heard and winced at many times, suggesting I “groom” a certain student for a particular award. Coming as it did on the heels of my first reading of Rushton’s “First, Do No Harm,” this call made me …

Lessons From Honors: National Scholarships, High-Impact Practices, And Student Success, Craig T. Cobane, Audra Jennings Apr 2017

Lessons From Honors: National Scholarships, High-Impact Practices, And Student Success, Craig T. Cobane, Audra Jennings

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

High-impact educational practices (HIPs) have long been central to honors pedagogy. From undergraduate research to service learning, study abroad, internships, and writing-intensive courses, these practices shape the honors educational experience and influence retention successes in honors. These practices also inform the synergy between honors and national scholarships by helping students to develop the skills and experiences necessary to compete for prestigious scholarships.

Across the United States, university and college administrators expend tremendous time and energy worrying about student retention, persistence, and graduation rates. Recently, university communities have focused considerable attention on the potential of HIPs to address these issues and …

Open Letter To Lia Rushton, Linda Frost Apr 2017

Open Letter To Lia Rushton, Linda Frost

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

I want to write this response as a letter to you, Lia, in part because I worked with you in helping national scholarship applicants at the University of Alabama at Birmingham but also because I know you are the kind of person who fully commits herself to the conversation at hand. What you emphasized in your essay and in all your years as a national fellowships advisor was the key importance of listening. I observed firsthand that your skill as a listener made you the successful, trailblazing, and legendary scholarships advisor that you were at UAB, focusing first and last …

Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing Apr 2017

Developing Citizenship Through Honors, Jacob Andrew Hester, Kari Lynn Besing

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

For decades, research has shown that higher levels of education correspond to increased interest in politics and civic engagement. Despite the vast amount of scholarly attention, why this link exists is still disputed. One theory about the connection is the civic education hypothesis, which claims that the causal link between education and civic engagement depends not only on the amount of education a person receives but also on the type of curriculum studied. For example, Hillygus argues that “some courses are more likely than others to develop the skills fundamental to political participation” (31). Similarly, Condon argues that the development …

The Strange Game Of Prestige Scholarships, John A. Knox Apr 2017

The Strange Game Of Prestige Scholarships, John A. Knox

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

As the “haunted” Rhodes finalist whom Lia Rushton accurately cited in her essay, I would like to provide some context for that reaction. I also wish to discuss some disquieting conclusions I have reached about prestige scholarships through my own experiences as a candidate, as an advisor to multiple nominees, via personal and family knowledge of nearly twenty Rhodes Scholars ranging from the Class of 1910 to the Class of 2000, and during twenty years as a faculty member at two universities.

What stood out most about my final Rhodes interview was its tone of bigotry and belligerence. I am …

Moving Beyond Gpa: Alternative Measures Of Success And Predictive Factors In Honors Programs, Tom Mould, Stephen B. Deloach Apr 2017

Moving Beyond Gpa: Alternative Measures Of Success And Predictive Factors In Honors Programs, Tom Mould, Stephen B. Deloach

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

While studies of predictive factors for success in honors have been increasingly creative and expansive on what these factors might include, they have rarely challenged the dominant, virtually monolithic definitions of success. The majority of studies measure success either by collegiate grade point averages (GPAs) or retention rates in honors, which are often contingent on collegiate GPA. For years scholars have been calling for a more nuanced and robust definition of success, yet few have taken up the charge, presumably because such data are not readily available. GPAs and retention rates are easy to access and quantify. Tracking and quantifying …

From the inception of the integration of predominantly White institutions in higher education marked by Sweatt v. Painter in 1950, The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) has been a battleground for educational equity. The university continues to find itself at ground zero in the battle for race and equity in higher education and embroiled in the debate over affirmative action, first in Hopwood v. Texas (1996) and then in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin (2013; 2016). For these reasons, UT Austin serves as a bellwether institution for public, predominantly White institutions (PWIs) when it comes to …

A Regression Model Approach To First-Year Honors Program Admissions Serving A High-Minority Population, David M. Rhea Apr 2017

A Regression Model Approach To First-Year Honors Program Admissions Serving A High-Minority Population, David M. Rhea

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Many honors programs make admissions decisions based on student high school GPA and a standardized test score. However, McKay argued that standardized test scores can be a barrier to honors program participation, particularly for minority students. Minority students, particularly Hispanic and African American students, are apt to have lower standardized test scores than other ethnic groups according to the 2013 national ACT Profile Reports on “Black/African American Students” and “Hispanic/Latino Students.” Thus, honors programs that serve high-minority populations need to find new honors program solutions that will help their university community as well as encourage a high standard of academic …

First, Do No Harm, Lia Rushton

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

When I was appointed fellowships advisor at UAB back in the late 1990s and before the formation of the National Association of Fellowships Advisors, as a first order of business I spoke with the university’s few former winners and finalists about their experiences applying for nationally competitive scholarships. One such former applicant, now an accomplished professor who had graduated from our honors program a number of years prior, was evidently still haunted by his Rhodes interview as he told me about the questions he had been asked by and the answers he had given to his interviewers, answers that did …
