What Makes An Excellent Teacher?, Steven M. Fettke Oct 2016

What Makes An Excellent Teacher?, Steven M. Fettke

Selected Faculty Publications

Everyone who attends any place of education on any level wants an “excellent” teacher; however, is that word —“excellence”— ethereal, mystical, or just entirely subjective? In this essay I wish to propose a definition of what excellent teaching entails by referring to the spiritual and social formation of the teacher. Central to my thinking is how the work of the Holy Spirit affects “excellence.” Reflecting on my long years of experience teaching in a Pentecostal college/university and as someone in pursuit of “excellence” in my own teaching, I think I have something to say about it which involves teachers, students, …

Funeral In The Classroom: A Failed Teaching Practice?, Nicola Blake Oct 2016

Funeral In The Classroom: A Failed Teaching Practice?, Nicola Blake

Publications and Research

The author introduces the idea of performative annotation as a powerful teaching tool to engage students in a shared experience of reading and understanding a piece of text. Orality and performance are shared constructs that provide opportunities for students to demarcate moments in a text that resonated with them. The nature of this activity is called into question because of the deeply emotional responses students have towards the experiential learning activity of recreating a funeral in the classroom. This article assesses what went wrong with the activity and offers suggestions on how to make space for performative annotation prior to …

Black Female Adolescents And Racism In Schools: Experiences In A Colorblind Society, Nicole Joseph, Kara Viesca, Margarita Bianco Oct 2016

Black Female Adolescents And Racism In Schools: Experiences In A Colorblind Society, Nicole Joseph, Kara Viesca, Margarita Bianco

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article takes up the questions: (a) How do Black female adolescents define racism?, (b) What kind of experiences with racism to they report having in schools?, and (c) How can these perspectives and experiences inform educational reform efforts? The in-depth analysis of 18 student surveys and interviews revealed that most of the definitions of racism centered on prejudice, discrimination, and differential treatment; and most of the experiences the girls described regarding racism in school illustrated issues of prejudice, discrimination, and differential treatment as well as stereotypes, labels and low teacher expectations. Critical Race Theory, Critical Race Feminism, and Black …

Technology-Mediated Synchronous Virtual Education: An Empirical Study, Xiaofeng Chen, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many higher education institutions have used Internet technology to develop virtual education for a new generation of college students. In this research, the authors assessed the relative effectiveness of two technology-mediated learning environments for synchronous higher education compared to a traditional face-to-face learning environment. Specifically, they assessed the effects of these three learning environments on interactivity, perceived learning, and satisfaction when different instructional strategies were used. The authors' findings suggest that learning environments interact with instructional strategies to affect the learners' perception of learning and satisfaction. Their findings also support the proposition that the new generation of college students prefer …

A Phenomenology Of Sixth Grade Students’ Perspectives On Their Experience Using A Rubric For Criterion-Referenced Assessment, Julie Quast

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine sixth grade literacy students’ perspectives of rubric-referenced assessment at an inner-city school in central Arkansas. The theories guiding this study were Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development, as rubrics scaffold students learning (Reeves & Stanford, 2009) and social cognitive theory, as rubrics help students regulate their learning (Covill, 2012) and control their actions (Bandura, 1997). The sample size included 29 students completing a questionnaire, 12 students participating in a focus group session, and two students journaling their experience. The research questions focused on the experiences, perspectives, approach to assignments, and response to …

Self-Regulation And Cognitive Load As Mediating Factors For Tailored Interactive Multimedia Instruction, Tammy Ann Bankus

Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation was to explore whether self-regulation or cognitive load have mediating effects on both learning experiences and learning effectiveness in tailored versus non-tailored interactive multimedia instructional (IMI) training. Although, there is a plethora of literature looking at the impact of cognitive load in IMI (Clark, 2008; Mayer, 2005; Mayer, 2008; Mayer, Griffith, Jurkowitz, & Rothman, 2008; Sweller, 2011) or looking at self-regulation (Pintrich, 2000a, 2000b; Schunk, Meece, & Pintrich, 2012; Zimmerman et al., 2000) separately, there is limited literature that looks at self-regulation and cognitive load in tailored IMI instruction, and even less literature examining …

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This paper explores collaboration between librarians and faculty in higher education to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information.

Increasing digital innovations in communication and pedagogy, the need for various literacy capabilities, and the potential wisdom gained from considering diverse methodological perspectives have driven the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Witt, 2012). There have also been several calls for a relational approach to teaching and learning, changing the roles of librarians (Farrell and Badke, 2015; Gunton et al, 2014; Jaguszewski and Williams, 2013), and scholarship which examines …

Future Trends In Information Literacy Instruction: Lessons Learned From 13 Libraries, Kirsten N. Dean

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In response to fresh mandates for proof of our library’s impact on student success, we are reformulating the instruction program at the Clemson University Libraries. Rather than racing forward with shots in the dark, we conscientiously chose to set aside time for research and planning. This presentation reports on the process and results of this first stage. I will start by reporting findings and identifying trends from my interviews with instruction librarians at thirteen academic libraries—a mix of peer institutions from our regional consortium and “model” institutions whose achievements in information literacy education have been recognized by the ACRL. I …

Contextualizing Information Literacy: Why “Why” Makes All The Difference, Wendy Doucette Sep 2016

Contextualizing Information Literacy: Why “Why” Makes All The Difference, Wendy Doucette

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Graduate students require the same base knowledge of information literacy as undergraduates, but are less likely to receive in-class instruction. Rather than considering them as external, theoretical signposts or goals, this presentation will discuss the value of situating the ACRL Information Literacy Standards and Framework into the real-life graduate student experience. Explaining what it means to have membership in the academic community leads directly to a deeper understanding of scholarly dialogue, authority and peer review. This grounding leads to an understanding of ownership, copyright, and plagiarism. This high-level overview of the scholarly research process allows students to comprehend their own …

Do You Know What They Don’T Know? : How Students Conduct Research, Peggy L. Nuhn, Min Tong Sep 2016

Do You Know What They Don’T Know? : How Students Conduct Research, Peggy L. Nuhn, Min Tong

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When developing student research assignments, many faculty may make the assumption that the current generation of computer-savvy students will intuitively determine how to effectively use library resources, and incorporate that information into a thoughtful and properly cited research paper -- after all, students frequently express a high level of confidence in their research abilities. But is this realistic? Do students understand the difference between a keyword and a subject search and how that understanding can help them? Do students really understand that research is a process rather than a scavenger hunt?

Any faculty member who has received student research papers …

Information Literacy And The Interface, Carrie Moran Sep 2016

Information Literacy And The Interface, Carrie Moran

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Librarians are often working to find a balance between instruction that teaches the conceptual information about research skills and the practical information on how to use the myriad library interfaces presented to students during the research process. The first interface a user encounters is often the library’s website, but users also navigate catalogs, databases, federated searches, research guides, third party vendor websites, and more as they track down information.

This session will discuss the application of user experience design and usability testing to library controlled interfaces. The presenter will share the outcomes of a user centered design process for a …

Frameworking Craap: How We're Correlating The Acrl Framework To Content Evaluation With The Craap Test In Our Instruction Practices, Paul Campbell, Derek Malone Sep 2016

Frameworking Craap: How We're Correlating The Acrl Framework To Content Evaluation With The Craap Test In Our Instruction Practices, Paul Campbell, Derek Malone

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

For years, we have used the CRAAP Test as an information evaluation mechanism in our instruction sessions. We apply it to everyday, real-life stories, and to complex research as needed. Currently, we are adapting our practices of CRAAP Test instruction by expanding the evaluation to include the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Specifically, we have given each CRAAP letter a frame for discussion when evaluating. This presentation will cover what frames we have assigned to each letter, why, and the assessment of the instruction using these concepts.
