Development Of A Jobs Database For Tracking Knowledge And Skills Expectations In The Workplace, Esa M. Rantanen, Christopher Claeys, Daniel Roder Aug 2013

Development Of A Jobs Database For Tracking Knowledge And Skills Expectations In The Workplace, Esa M. Rantanen, Christopher Claeys, Daniel Roder

Articles

The primary objective of college education in applied disciplines is that it is relevant to the expectations for new professionals entering the labor market. Academic institutions should therefore pay close attention to the ever-changing skills and knowledge expectations in the labor market. These trends are not easy to track, however. Surveys of new professionals about their experiences in their first jobs or surveys of employers about their experiences with new hires suffer from low response rates, nonresponse bias, and the one-time nature of survey research. A better way to track labor market trends is to continually analyze human factors job …

Evaluating Current Educational Qualities And Potential Impact On The Public Good In A Democracy, Sarah Kunz, Dr. Randall Davies Aug 2013

Evaluating Current Educational Qualities And Potential Impact On The Public Good In A Democracy, Sarah Kunz, Dr. Randall Davies

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Democracy is a political orientation that is struggling to survive in certain aspects of the current educational society. This project was developed to answer the question, “What are some current educational qualities that are either supporting or undermining the public good for our future democracy?” The identification of supporting and undermining democratic educational qualities is critical. Democratic educational qualities require further qualitative and quantitative research for effective adjustment of educational goals and curriculum for preparing students to enter and contribute to a democratic society. Shaker and Heilmen (2008) compiled a summary of educational qualities that support the public good in …

Impact Of Teachers' Planned Questions On Opportunities For Students To Reason Mathematically In Whole-Class Discussions Around Mathematical Problem-Solving Tasks, Sarah Elizabeth Enoch Aug 2013

Impact Of Teachers' Planned Questions On Opportunities For Students To Reason Mathematically In Whole-Class Discussions Around Mathematical Problem-Solving Tasks, Sarah Elizabeth Enoch

Dissertations and Theses

While professional developers have been encouraging teachers to plan for discourse around problem solving tasks as a way to orchestrate mathematically productive discourse (Stein, Engle, Smith, & Hughes, 2008; Stein, Smith, Henningsen, & Silver, 2009) no research has been conducted explicitly examining the relationship between the plans that teachers make for orchestrating discourse around problem solving tasks and the outcomes of implementation of those plans. This research study is intended to open the door to research on planning for discourse around problem solving tasks.

This research study analyzes how 12 middle school mathematics teachers participating in the Mathematics Problem Solving …

A New Field Of Dreams: A Study Of The Writing Major, T J Geiger Aug 2013

A New Field Of Dreams: A Study Of The Writing Major, T J Geiger

Writing Program – Dissertations

Within Writing Studies, the tension between pedagogy and theory, between teaching and disciplinary status receives much commentary. This dissertation explores that tension within the context of the undergraduate Writing major. I begin by reviewing scholarship about advanced composition, advanced Writing, and the Writing major. I read this literature in light of concerns about student subjectivity, authorship, and disciplinary participation. Through that reading, I explore the conflicted status of the student subject imagined within this literature. The subject I discern contains elements of what Susan Miller describes as the normative subject of composition as well as elements of a revised and …

Lessons Learned At Selected 1:1 Ipad High Schools, School Year 2012-2013, Amy F. Johnson Phd, Caroline A. Pinkham

Education Technology

In the spring of 2013, the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) adopted a new approach to its 1:1 device selection process. Rather than choosing a single vendor to provide a uniform statewide technology implementation, the Maine Department of Education opted to select a preferred solution and allowed schools the autonomy to choose from among four other approved bids. In anticipation that a number of schools would choose to provide iPads to students, the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) at the University of Southern Maine surveyed teachers at three Maine high schools currently using 1:1 iPads with their students.

National Board For Professional Teaching Standards Certification And Teacher Self-Efficacy, Lynn A. Hines Aug 2013

National Board For Professional Teaching Standards Certification And Teacher Self-Efficacy, Lynn A. Hines

Dissertations

Due to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and state-level mandates, an economic and moral imperative requires educators today to not only accommodate differences in learning rates and allow extra time for students to experience success, teachers must foster in students the belief that success is within their reach if they keep trying. These new expectations for student learning are clashing with old conceptions of teaching and outmoded approaches and structures for teacher practices. Given the new mission of schools, finding strong models of professional development is imperative. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is a promising model. Self-efficacy, …

Teaching World Music In An Elementary Setting: Effective Teaching Strategies And Classroom Materials, Calyna Mc Allister Aug 2013

Teaching World Music In An Elementary Setting: Effective Teaching Strategies And Classroom Materials, Calyna Mc Allister

Masters Theses

The world we live in today is increasingly a global society. As such, the various cultures of the world come into contact with one another more often. Students today need to have experiences with different cultures in order to participate effectively in this globally minded world. An excellent way to expose children to these cultures is through the use of world music in the general music classroom. The need for world music from a music education standpoint has been addressed over the past few decades. However, little has been done to address the teaching methods associated with world music or …
