Learning Technology Policies In Action : Where Do The States Stand?, Evie Charles Pugh
Learning Technology Policies In Action : Where Do The States Stand?, Evie Charles Pugh
Graduate Research Papers
In states with technology plans, there is a common belief that technology has the power to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning environment of the classroom. Many states' technology policies and plans reflect a demand for information about student learning outcomes and the cost and benefits of education programs. The eight states in the North Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium (NCRTEC) are: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The need for district spending in education technology, such as computer training, professional development, service/support networking, supplies, and hardware, has become a major issue …
Literature-Based Language Arts Extended To The Science Area : Flight And Space, Thomas F. Ryan
Literature-Based Language Arts Extended To The Science Area : Flight And Space, Thomas F. Ryan
Graduate Research Papers
This instructional project is an integration of the language arts and science areas. A fertile learning environment was established with a literature base that included different genres and related expressive activities. This extensive literature base provided an in-depth study of flight and space, a unit that is part of the third-fourth grade science curriculum.
The goal of this project was to present quality literature, representative of many genres, to integrate study across the curriculum. As the learners progressed through the activities that were student-initiated as well as teacher-directed, they displayed an increased appreciation of literature as well as a working …
Oral History In A Kindergarten Classroom, Marilyn J. Shanks
Oral History In A Kindergarten Classroom, Marilyn J. Shanks
Graduate Research Papers
Oral history offers elementary teachers an exciting way to get students actively involved. It allows them to deal directly with people and places in the real world. It involves students in the decision-making process and allows them to feel ownership in a part of history. Oral history combines process and product into a real-life experience. It is an excellent teaching tool that fosters excitement about heritage, tradition, and family and helps promote respect and appreciation for the older generation.

Developing And Assessing Integrated Technology Curriculum, Kelly Baier
Graduate Research Papers
This project is a technology curriculum development plan for 2nd graders for the Johnston Community School District. It involves the development of district standards and benchmarks, lesson plans integrating technology into other curricular areas, and assessments. This curriculum plan was developed at each grade level and used to improve teacher accountability, enhance students' problem-solving skills, keep consistency across the grade levels, and to have a district-wide technology plan for our students. The paper, which accompanies the project, includes an introduction to the project, its methodology, a description of the project in full detail, and conclusions and recommendations for future work.
How Telecommunications Is Assisting The United States In Adult Educational Distance Learning Programs, Telemedicine, And Future Applications, Minna Ann Harrison
How Telecommunications Is Assisting The United States In Adult Educational Distance Learning Programs, Telemedicine, And Future Applications, Minna Ann Harrison
Graduate Research Papers
The future of telecommunications becomes more unpredictable every passing day. Products and services that were just dreamed of in the past, only six months to a year ago, are here and ready to be used in everyday life. Wireless service has been affected by PCS providers who are offering services to customers that are considerably cheaper. Voice recognition programs/applications were only being bounced around in 1997, but currently are being used at work places and homes. At the 1998 Comdex technology trade show six major software companies were promoting their voice recognition programs.
There are some glitches still. But as …
Implementing A Reading Recovery Shared Classroom : Good First-Grade Reading Instruction For All, Bonnie L. Hoewing
Implementing A Reading Recovery Shared Classroom : Good First-Grade Reading Instruction For All, Bonnie L. Hoewing
Graduate Research Papers
Reading Recovery is an early intervention designed by Marie Clay (1985) to be implemented in an educational system for the purpose of providing a second chance for success for first grade children who are at risk of failing to learn to read. Reading Recovery is preventive rather than a remedial intervention. Early intervention to deal with reading difficulties is much more powerful than remediation at a later time. Good teaching of reading skills, early in a child's formal education, will help create the foundation needed for continued learning throughout their lives.

Senior Project: A Paradox In Critical Pedagogy, Mark Allen Winters
Senior Project: A Paradox In Critical Pedagogy, Mark Allen Winters
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
High school education is currently based upon technicist pedagogy, transforming education into mere technical training for the workforce. The regimen of testing in schools standardizes experiences and fails to provide a complete view of what students know and are able to do. Students need freedom to question and to insert their own interests into what they are studying. Such freedom provides more than preparation for graduation; it provides emancipatory education. I focused on a single curricular program—Senior Project. My research questioned, "Can Senior Project provide high school students with the freedom to study topics of personal interest and the freedom …

Designing Teacher Education Course Syllabi That Integrate Service-Learning, Michael Rowls, Kevin J. Swick
Syllabi
Sample service-learning in teacher education course syllabi are analyzed in relation to important variables impacting the value and use of this pedagogy in teacher education courses and experiences. Results of the analysis – as interrelated with the findings of other service-learning research – point to possible means for strengthening the design and uses of service-learning in teacher education. Guidelines for strengthening service-learning within teacher education courses are presented and discussed.

Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf
Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf
Curriculum
This learning packet contains a set of exercises designed to stimulate the student's thinking about their community and the value of community service. It begins with a personal definition of the word "community." From this definition, the student then gathers information about the school community. Hopefully, by attending school club meetings students will increase their sense of belonging and learn about options for volunteering at their campus. The notion that young people are selfish and hedonistic is examined in a section about stereotypes and biased news reporting. To break up the "worksheet" sequence two movie assignment guides are provided, where …
Service-Learning As "Citizenship" Education: The Promise And The Puzzles, Bernadette Sun Chi
Service-Learning As "Citizenship" Education: The Promise And The Puzzles, Bernadette Sun Chi
Curriculum
Since developing "citizenship" is a prevalent goal for many service-learning programs and policies, Bernadette Chi's National Service Fellowship research proposed to examine what and how students learn "citizenship" through service-learning. She explored students' attitudes about service, their understanding of citizenship, and the relationship between the concepts as a way to consider how service-learning contributed to students' conceptions of citizenship. To suggest how and why students' attitudes differed, this report also briefly describes the significant role of teachers in shaping service-learning experiences, and the variety of service-learning practices that contribute to a diversity of outcomes. In coordination with a state-funded study …

Reading Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Donna L. Lowe
Reading Portfolios In A First Grade Classroom, Donna L. Lowe
Graduate Research Papers
The current move toward authentic assessment encourages teachers to use qualitative methods in evaluating children's reading. One such method is the use of portfolios. This method empowers children and teachers with control over goals and methods of instruction. Students take responsibility in collaboration with the teacher for establishing the goals for their own learning. Thus, portfolios can link instruction and assessment more closely.
The following discussion describes the implementation of reading portfolios in a first grade classroom. The portfolio development of two students was focused on in this implementation stage. The students were chosen because of their strong interest in …
