G00-1411 Biosecurity Basics For Cattle Operations And Good Management Practices (Gmp) For Controlling Infectious Diseases, Marilyn Buhman, Grant Dewell, Dicky D. Griffin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide introduces cattle producers to the concept of biosecurity and provides practical management recommendations for preventing and/or containing infectious disease.
Biosecurity
The goal of biosecurity is to stop transmission of disease-causing agents by preventing, minimizing or controlling cross-contamination of body fluids (feces, urine, saliva, etc.) between animals, animals to feed and animals to equipment that may directly or indirectly contact animals. Biosecurity management practices are designed to prevent the spread of disease by minimizing the movement of biologic organisms and their vectors (viruses, bacteria, rodents, flies, etc.) onto and within your operation. Biosecurity can be very difficult to maintain …

Ec00-153 Selecting Alfalfa Varieties For Nebraska, Bruce Anderson, Michael Trammell, Patrick E. Reece
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Yield potential, pest resistance and seed price should be considered when selecting alfalfa varieties in Nebraska.
The most important variety decision on many farms and ranches is the selection of alfalfa. The choice of alfalfa variety affects production for three to 10 or more years, whereas varieties of annual crops can be change every year.
This extension circular lists the alfalfa varieties that have been tested in Nebraska with commercial seed for two or more years since 1997 and marketed in the state. These are the 2000 results.

Synchronization of estrus (heat) involves manipulating the estrous cycle of beef females in a herd so they can be bred at approximately the same time. There are several traditional protocols available for synchronizing estrus among beef females.
This extension circular discusses the programs and protocols used in synchronizing estrus in the beef cow.

Ec00-829 Flexible Cash Leasing Of Cropland, Roger Selley, Bruce B. Johnson, H. Douglas Jose, John D. Cole
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Agreeing on a cash rent can be a challenging task. Typically there is considerable uncertainty about what prices and yields will be in the upcoming year, and anticipating revenues is further complicated with the uncertainty of farm program payments, particularly in low income years when Congress may appropriate unexpected assistance. Attempting to determine a cash rent to apply for more than one year adds to the challenge. Also, adjustments to rent are required over time to remain current with changes in farm program provisions, production costs, productivity and product price levels.
The expected costs and revenues used to establish a …
Ec00-154 Precision Agriculture: Soil Sampling For Precision Agriculture, Richard B. Ferguson, Gary W. Hergert
Ec00-154 Precision Agriculture: Soil Sampling For Precision Agriculture, Richard B. Ferguson, Gary W. Hergert
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
As various aspects of precision agriculture are implemented in Nebraska, some of the most frequent questions asked by producers, fertilizer dealers and crop consultants relate to soil sampling. Should I soil sample this field on a grid? What grid spacing should I use? How often should I sample? Can I use a yield map to tell where to soil sample? All of these are good questions, but often we do not have definitive answers. Site-specific management research conducted in recent years in Nebraska, however, provides some direction on how to implement a soil sampling program for precision agriculture.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains how managers can tailor recognition to individuals, thus increasing its effectiveness.
The Importance of Rewards
If there's one thing in life that everyone wants it's to be appreciated, rewarded and recognized for their contributions. Studies indicate that employees find personal recognition more motivational than money. Results of a recent Council on Communication Management survey confirms this. According to a recent Gallup poll of people who stopped volunteering, 42 percent said they felt their work was unimportant or was unappreciated at the work place or in a volunteer setting, appropriately rewarding people is important to retention and job …

G99-1388 Seam Finishes For A Plain Seam, Rose Marie Tondl
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide covers seam finishes for a plain seam.
A plain seam is the basic element in all garment construction. It is created by stitching two pieces of fabric together, usually 5/8 inch from the cut edge using 10-12 stitches per inch. It is used with a variety of fabrics and found in all areas of a garment. Unless noted differently in the pattern instructions, the seam allowance is pressed open and an appropriate seam finish is used. For fabrics that ravel excessively, consider finishing the edge of the fabric before sewing the seam.

G99-1397 Motivating Your Employees, John E. Barbuto, Jr., Lance L. Brown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
The ability to motivate employees is often the difference between extraordinary and mediocre leadership. This guide provides a useful tool for understanding and motivating employees.
Leaders who are able to motivate their workers will have a better chance of reducing the typical labor problems faced in today's economy (turnover, absenteeism and low productivity). In the past, when the state's economy was weaker than it is today, agricultural leaders didn't have to worry about these labor issues because there were plenty of workers to choose from. Because of the expansion of agricultural enterprises and Nebraska's exceptionally low unemployment rate, finding, keeping …

Ec99-794 On-Farm Storage Of Dry Edible Beans: A Survey Of Nebraka Growers And Storage Guidelines, Thomas L. Holman, John A. Smith
Ec99-794 On-Farm Storage Of Dry Edible Beans: A Survey Of Nebraka Growers And Storage Guidelines, Thomas L. Holman, John A. Smith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Dry edible bean producers in Nebraska typically deliver their crop to local bean dealers directly from the field, for either immediate sale or storage. Estimates are that less than 5 percent of Nebraska growers store part or all of their dry edible bean harvest in on-farm storage. In contrast, a much higher percentage of dry edible bean producers in other growing regions, particularly North Dakota and Michigan, use on-farm storage in their management plan. In Nebraska, corn and wheat producers are most likely to store all or part of their harvested grain on-farm. Why do so few Nebraska dry edible …

G99-1375 Lilacs, Dale T. Lindgren, Don Steinegger, Todd Morrisey
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses lilac species, propagation, culture and pests.
Lilacs are among the most versatile shrubs grown in Nebraska. They come in various shapes, sizes, flower types and flower colors. Time of flowering also varies with species and cultivars. Lilacs can be used statewide for wind screens, hedges, accent plants or strictly for flower beauty and fragrance. Their drought and winter hardiness makes them easy to grow. They can survive, even when neglected, but perform better with care. Good soil drainage and full sun exposure are essential for optimal performance.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Developing tourism can enhance the economy. This NebGuide describes how to use lodging tax statistics to estimate the impact of tourism on a community.
Every community interested in developing tourism to enhance or diversify their economy wants to know how much good tourism can do for them. While tourism is not the answer to every community's economic challenges, it can provide economic benefits in many cases. These economic benefits must then be compared to the social, cultural and environmental changes that tourism might bring in order to judge its acceptability in community economic development efforts.
Politicians, planners and citizens want …
