University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Nitrate-nitrogen in groundwater is a major public concern. Agriculture is often targeted as the primary source; however, crop producers are reluctant to reduce the amount of nitrogen they apply in fear of reducing crop yields and profits. Soil testing for nitrate-nitrogen is being promoted as a way to fine-tune or improve nitrogen management, but adoption by producers has been slow. This publication explains how to conduct a field demonstration using scientifically acceptable methods that are practical for on-farm use.

G93-1133 Estimating Percent Residue Cover Using The Line-Transect Method, David P. Shelton, Roger Kanable, Paul J. Jasa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes how to use the line-transect method to estimate the percentage of the soil surface covered with crop residue.
Crop residue left on the soil surface is one of the easiest and most cost-effective methods of reducing soil erosion. Research in Nebraska and other midwestern states has shown that leaving as little as 20 percent of the soil surface covered with crop residues can reduce soil erosion by one-half of what it would be from residue-free conditions. Greater amounts of residue cover will further reduce erosion.

The process of building community understanding is an important one, regardless of the area of concern. As more and more citizens recognize a particular problem, that problem moves from the private to the public domain and requires the involvement of a larger segment of the community. Though this NebGuide deals specifically with the example of school-age child care, the process of involving the whole community is relevant to any area of policy-making.
How can citizens get started in …

This NebGuide stresses the importance to the dairy cow of water, an essential but often overlooked nutrient.
Providing insufficient water or water of poor quality to dairy cattle can limit milk production and growth, and can cause health problems. An adequate supply of clean water promotes normal rumen function, high feed intake, digestion and nutrient absorption. Water also maintains blood volume, supplies tissue needs, and makes up about 87 percent of the milk secreted by the cow. The following sections discuss water intake and requirements, water quality and guidelines for proper use of cattle waterers.
