A Program For Parents In Children’S Literature And Prereading Activities, James Patrick Rogers

This project developed an educational program for parents of children in the lower economic classes. The program consisted of a series of workshops for parents to help them enrich the prereading background of their preschool and primary-grade children. The major emphasis was to acquaint parents with children's literature and with the importance of their role in the reading development of their children.

Simulations For Teaching Concepts On Washington State, Cynthia Louise Buettgenbach

Simulation lessons and materials were developed to teach concepts on Washington State to a classroom of fourth grade students. The activities in which the students participated were the following:

1) planned trips to the five geographic regions of Washington State;

2) became part of an Indian tribe and held a meeting with other tribes at Sacajawea Park;

3) played a board game, traveling with Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean;

4) held mock state elections and one legislative session.

Students showed an increased interest in social studies through the simulations.

The purpose of this study was to design a developmental curriculum of activities for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped preschoolers, ages birth to 5 years. Visual motor, fine motor, and sensory skills were the areas specifically designed for the curriculum. A review of literature was conducted, investigating current information of curriculum for preschool nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children. Samples of curriclum from a variety of preschool project models were examined. A compilation of data resulted in a preschool curriculum for nonambulatory-multiply handicapped children.

A curriculum enrichment guide was developed to help intermediate special education teachers to adapt social studies material to meet the needs of each individual special education student. Eight supplemental units were developed to be used in conjunction with the Follett Social Studies text Exploring Our World: The Americas, level 5, (Ahlschwede, 1977). Each unit included: 1) key concepts; 2) vocabulary; 3) strategies for instruction; and 4) student involvement.

A preschool model for 3-5 year old rural handicapped children is based on developmental skills in the areas of receptive and expressive language acquisition, fine and gross motor movement and beginning cognitive skills. Also included, to facilitate the establishment of a new rural preschool is a list of materials needed to begin the program and a list of free and low cost legal, medical, and assessment services. The need for rural preschool programs is discussed as well as reasons for growth of preschool in Washington state.

The program included thirty weekly sets of formal written lessons to provide the opportunity for students to practice the meaning or multiple meanings of each word. The need for developing strategies for teaching in the content areas was examined and, as a result, a study guide was developed to aid students in understanding the content of the psychology textbook. Lessons were developed for each of four different chapters to serve as instructional tools for teaching the content of a specific psychology textbook. A study has been made to select arts activities that will help enhance creativity. All children possess some amount of creative ability. Children, if encouraged, can develop this potential; if they are discouraged they tend to draw inward and thus their creativity is stifled. Ways for teachers to help increase and encourage creativity are discussed. Activities in the areas of art, music, and drama are presented in the project portion of this paper and will be used as a handbook for elementary teachers.

A year-long simulation game was created to facilitate the teaching of basic economics in a sixth and seventh grade middle school. The game could be adapted to implementation at lower grade levels. The students built two, table-top cities. They established a money system and were paid for positive behavior and effort. With their earned income and with loans from a bank, they purchased land, built homes, invested in business franchises, engaged in trade, and worked collectively to finance and build government projects and services. Textbook Selection Process: An Historical Account Of The Steps Involved In Textbook Selection Guidelines For Washington State Public Schools, James D. Shannon

Local schools and school districts in the State of Washington have the responsibility for selecting textbooks to meet the district's philosophies, goals, and objectives as well as state regulations. To eliminate some of the problems inherent in this situation and to ensure more satisfactory results, this writer developed a procedure based on a committee approach, using a participatory decision making mode. Also, evaluative criteria and a rating tool were designed for use in screening, evaluating, and selecting textbooks. This project presents the steps used in the process.

Development Of The Minimum Competency Exam In Mathematics For The Hoquiam School District, John Daniel Descher

Two competency exams (Test A and Test B) were constructed and field tested on high school students in the Hoquiam School District. Individual results were compared to respective Stanford Achievement Test scores. Statistical analyses were performed to investigate population differences. Results from Test A were compared to results from Test B. Also, differences between performances of juniors and seniors were analyzed. A further statistical analysis was performed to compare performances between boys and girls.

Home Interaction Program: Hip, Georgia Sackman

A Home Interaction Program (HIP) was designed and implemented for Title I parents and students. The components of the program included monthly newsletters, libraries, and workshops. It was found that parents of Title I students participated in HIP activities as long as they could be done in the home. The conclusion was reached that if schools want Title I parents to become involved in their child's education learning experiences, programs must be developed to reach into the home.

The purpose of this project was twofold: (1) to develop a set of games which could be . used for self-directed practice of first-grade reading skills, the sequence of which correlated to the Ginn 720, 1979 Rainbow edition, reading series, and (2) to make available to other teachers, through development of a resource manual, the ideas for construction of the games developed. Literature on the use of games in education was reviewed.

The purpose of the project was to develop a brief curriculum which would provide classroom activities related to visual literacy. The project was focused on grades four, five, and six. Visual literacy activities were developed to be used as learning experiences to develop specific visual skills. Other activities were also developed to be used as teaching aids in the subject areas of language arts and reading. The lessons were then tested on a limited basis in classroom situations. The results of the tests showed the activities to be functional and motivational.

A teacher's manual of reading enrichment activities was developed for use by reading specialists. The manual contains activities geared towards primary-aged children reading at least two years above grade level. It is divided into four focal units, each based on a different area of children's literature. Bloom's Taxonomy at the higher levels is used to classify the specific learning activities suggested in the focal units. A children's bibliography is included for each unit. Teacher resources on the gifted are also listed.

This paper presents a program for teaching media/research skills by integrating them with study assignments in curricular areas developed by classroom teachers. It is planned to be carried out in the Instructional Resource Center with both the classroom teacher and the librarian present. Evaluation is provided for student diagnosis and program improvement. This project is the development of a curriculum of language packets in Spanish dealing with the communication concepts which are tested in the MAT-SEA-CAL Oral Language Proficiency Test. The packets develop one specific skill in each of the communication concepts: numerality, temporality, spatial relations, identification, classification, case relationships, interrogation, and negation. The packets are designed for native Spanish speakers, grades K-3, who have certain structural problems in oral Spanish.

Enrichment Materials In Reading Designed For The Gifted First Grade Child, Virginia Ann Burke

This project provides enrichment reading materials for the first grade child who is designated as gifted and is reading beyond the preprimer and primer levels at the beginning of the school year. The materials are divided into four areas; (1) word recognition, (2) comprehension, (3) vocabulary, and (4) study skills. In each of these areas, enrichment activities have been prepared with the most emphasis given to comprehension. Although originally designed to be used independently, the materials can be used as skill teaching devices. The difficulty of the materials varies; therefore, the materials have been sequenced according to difficulty.

This project consists of three parts. Chapter 1 establishes the need for more concentrated teaching of poor readers among school children and suggests volunteer tutors as a possible source of help. Chapter 2 examines the history of tutoring by non-professionals and concludes that volunteers can indeed be effective tutors, but that appropriate training is a crucial factor. Chapter 3, the main part of the project, presents a set of ten training modules each consisting of taped instructions and accompanying printed material. The script for each tape is included in this paper.

This project, designed for content teachers wishing to improve their students' reading skills, includes lesson plans, procedures, and materials for learning modules in the following content field reading problem areas: readability, vocabulary, diagnosis, questioning, using the textbook, organizing for instruction, and notetaking and listening. The key recommendation was that the project be seen as an evolving process and not as an end product.
