Making Games And Equipment For Young Children, Claudia Eliason

Many opportunities for enjoyment, learning, and interaction can be provided through the child's use of homemade games and equipment. Children love games and parents usually like to provide as many as they can. However, not only does the family budget often limit the quantity and quality of pieces of equipment that can be purchased, but in addition many store toys are limited in terms of their learning potential for children and parents. It is the intent of this booklet to suggest games that can be made from easily accessible and inexpensive materials.

The Effects Of A Direct Instruction Program In Fractions On Academic And Mathematics Self-Concept, William H. Lowry

The study investigated the effect of a videodisc-based, teacher-controlled, direct instruction-based program in fractions content, on self-concept. Self-concept was operationally defined as scores on a slightly modified version of Marsh's Self-Description Questionnaire (Marsh, 1988). A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group design was used to compare the self-report self-concept of two groups of upper elementary students (N = 337). The treatment group (n = 171) received instruction in fractions via the teacher-directed, videodisc-based, Mastering Fractions program (Systems Impact, 1986a). The control group (n = 166) received their normal grade four or grade five mathematics program, but did not include common fractions.

The State of Utah's Department of Education has developed an objective/outcome based education model, K-12 grade levels, based upon effective teaching research. The model components are 1) a core curriculum consisting of the basic elements essential for every student's educational program; 2) curriculum instruction based upon the mastery of educational outcomes at an appropriate level in accuracy and fluency, with a variety of options for learning; and 3) management systems which eliminate redundancy in the educational process. The assessment of consumer awareness is important to: 1) identify awareness needs of adults, 2) design programs to meet those needs, and 3) assess changes in consumer awareness as a result of participation in such programs. A search of the literature failed to identify an instrument using recall rather than recognition to assess adult consumer awareness of sources of product/service information, existing consumer protection laws, and possible channels of recourse.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze community power actors' responses to a questionnaire, in order to gain information to be used in developing Career Next Step High School Placement Center guidelines.

The study was a descriptive research which employed the reputational technique to identify community power actors and the survey technique to gain information from selected urban schools for comparative purposes.

The reputational technique surveyed 31 Ogden Community power actors and the survey technique was administered to 26 selected urban high schools in Utah.

This study, investigating teaching style, was conducted as part of a curriculum development and research effort aimed at teaching students conceptualized skills considered useful in the analysis of public controversial issues.

Approximately 220 junior students entering into an American history-problems of democracy two-year course sequence were taught the conceptualized analytic skills. Four teachers learned three teaching styles; namely, recitation, seminar, and socratic, The teachers used the three styles with small groups of students in discussions of case studies involving public controversial issues. In the discussions students were expected to use the analytic skills taught to them.

The introduction of contemporary music to elementary and junior high school students in performance classes is hindered by a shortage of such music playable by young students. For example, in Contemporary Music for the Schools (Music Educators National Conference, 1966) which is the major source of contemporary music for school bands, 85 band pieces are listed, but only five are designated as suitable for junior high school bands, and only two are designated as suitable for elementary school bands.
