Getting Students To Think Critically And Visibly, Alanna Bowie
Getting Students To Think Critically And Visibly, Alanna Bowie
Becoming: Journal of the Georgia Association for Middle Level Education
Students can sometimes find the classroom to be an uncomfortable environment; hence, it can be difficult to persuade them to voice their thinking in front of their peers. Students’ fear of accidentally recalling incorrect answers in a classroom setting may set a domino effect of instant ridicule from their classmates, which can consequentially inhibit many of them from participating in future classroom discourse. To reduce fears, educators should foster an environment of support that encourages students to think visibly and more critically. The purpose of this article is to explore the literature, which suggests an environment that promotes creative learning …

Encouraging Teacher Candidates To Cultivate Habits Of Reflection, Amanda Wall
Becoming: Journal of the Georgia Association for Middle Level Education
The conceptual framework for the College of Education at Georgia Southern University is: Reflective Practitioners for a Diverse World. Three of the five Middle Level Teacher Preparation Standards from the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE, 2012) also specify reflection as a habit. Standard 5 on Middle Level Professional Roles, for example, states: “Middle level teacher candidates understand, reflect on, and are successful in their unique roles as middle level professionals.” In order for teacher candidates to become reflective, they need multiple opportunities to engage in reflection.

Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
Curriculum integration is a tenet of middle level education. This We Believe, the position paper of the Association for Middle Level Education, advocates for curriculum that is exploratory, relevant, integrative, and meaningful for young adolescents. Teachers can integrate curriculum across content areas by anchoring units of study in issues and themes that are determined along with students. Researchers have studied curriculum integration in different capacities, and further research can continue to explore the impact of this approach to curriculum.

High school youth who live in the inner city, many of First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) descent, have traditionally had struggles within school systems. Many have had a great deal of personal trauma in their lives. This presentation subscribes to the idea that the trauma they have experienced has affected them in a way, which compromises learning and causes students to be continually distracted from their classroom lessons. The presentation will illustrate how to work with these youth using trauma-informed teaching practices to support their emotional, behavioural, mental and spiritual well being.

Exploring Job Satisfaction And Preceptorship Capacity Among Applied Epidemiologists, Jessica C. Arrazola
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Job satisfaction is important to consider when developing strategies for recruitment and retention. The Public Health Workforce Interests and Needs Survey (PH WINS) conducted in 2014 was the first nationally representative assessment of the state public health workforce. Prior to this assessment, the job satisfaction of state agency public health workers and preceptor capacity had not been measured. This study fills the current research gaps by studying the job satisfaction among the applied epidemiology workforce, identifying factors influencing job satisfaction, and the describing the preceptorship capacity among epidemiologists. This research is based on the 2014 PH WINS data. The analysis …

“I’M Not Good At Math”: Mathematical Illiteracy And Innummeracy In The United States, G. Wesley Rogers
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Why do we view mathematics the way we do in the United States and how have these views created an environment where we consider mathematical illiteracy and innumeracy socially and culturally acceptable when a lack of this knowledge and ability can function to enslave, exploit, restrict, and oppress. Throughout this investigation, I have explored some of the possible reasons for why we view education, mathematics, and the learning of mathematics the way we do and the impact of these views on our motivation and desire to learn mathematics. Using my over 20 years of teaching experience and the review of …

Intuition And Curriculum: From Precognition To Agency, Sandra Martinaitis
Intuition And Curriculum: From Precognition To Agency, Sandra Martinaitis
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The dissertation is a speculative essay using the framework of Joseph Schwab’s (1969) commonplaces of: subject matter, student, teacher and milieu to examine how intuition can and should form part of curriculum. The overarching theme is that intuition and intuitive teaching and learning is an iterative path which leads to self-knowledge, reflection, cognition and acceptance of ‘other’ -- the Freirian (2010) notion of tolérance-- resulting in critical thinking and agency to ameliorate lives -- particularly of the oppressed. It embraces the clichéd notion of education leading to informed citizens who will make the right choices for society as a …
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Promoting Student Buy-In: Using Writing To Develop Mathematical Understanding, Barbara King, Denise Raposo, Mercedes Gimenez
Georgia Educational Researcher
Writing in mathematics provides students with the opportunity to think critically about and reflect on their experiences while solving problems. While many studies have documented the benefit of writing in math, it is not clear which instructional methods should be used to help students learn how to use writing to support learning. In this study, we take a constructivist approach to building students understanding of effective writing by developing a series of active, student-centered lessons. The findings indicate that students wrote more effectively after the instructional sequence; in particular, they were better able to explain their reasoning and to make …

We’Ve Got You Covered! Using An Umbrella Approach For Research And Beam To Build Student Research Papers: How Library Instruction And English Composition Classes Lay The Foundation For Information Literacy And Research Skills, Samantha Mcneilly, Amy Locklear
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The Library and English instructors have typically utilized traditional ‘one-shot’ sessions to introduce students in Composition classes to the library databases and other resources available to them. Typically, there is little discussion as to how to formulate research strategies other than using keywords and Boolean operators in the search boxes of the various databases. Librarians expect the English instructors to prepare their students ahead of time on how to formulate keywords that will be used during their research. While most writing instructors are familiar with how to conduct research, they may not spend much time on teaching how to conduct …

Galileo: Staying Afloat In The Digital Age, Pamela Y. Mccreless
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
According to the Pew Research Center, 94% of teachers surveyed indicated that their students are “very likely” to use Google or other search engines ahead of all other sources when doing research for assignments. Educators agree that students are drowning in information. Teachers and librarians alike have the mission to teach information literacy skills to enable students to stay afloat in the sea of information. These same students were reported to lack online search skills. Students should understand that not all search engines are alike nor can all search engine results be trusted 100% of the time. Facilitating Middle Level Pre-Service Teachers’ Literacy Integration In Early Field Experiences, Alisa Leckie, Amanda Wall
Middle Grades & Secondary Education: Faculty Publications
This study explored how pre-service teachers integrated literacy in middle level social studies. This study was conducted in the context of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and their focus on disciplinary literacy, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) Standards and their focus on rich clinical experiences, and concepts of interdisciplinary and integrated curriculum central to middle level philosophy (NMSA, 2010). Three pre-service teachers in their first extended field practicum took part in this collective case study (Yin, 2009). We identified two key findings. First, these pre-service teachers primarily integrated literacy in ways that were brief, teacher-directed, …

Informed Learning, Information Literacy, And Scholarly Communication: Library Pedagogy As A Bridge To The Disciplines, Kim L. Ranger
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
This paper explores collaboration between librarians and faculty in higher education to construct connections between informed learning theory, information literacy practice, and disciplinary scholarly products to foster reflective and deep engagement with information.
Increasing digital innovations in communication and pedagogy, the need for various literacy capabilities, and the potential wisdom gained from considering diverse methodological perspectives have driven the need for interdisciplinary collaboration (Witt, 2012). There have also been several calls for a relational approach to teaching and learning, changing the roles of librarians (Farrell and Badke, 2015; Gunton et al, 2014; Jaguszewski and Williams, 2013), and scholarship which examines …
