Collaborative Lesson Study: A Qualitative Case Study Of Elementary Teachers’ Professional Learning Experience, Arlene D. Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

Teacher collaboration practices in schools have impacted how teachers work together to prevent professional isolation. The mandate of collaborative practices has resulted in some teachers expressing frustration and a lack of benefit from their current experiences. The purpose of this qualitative case study, conducted in the Southeast region of the United States, was to determine if lesson study provided a more meaningful collaborative approach during focused group sessions. Using New London Group’s (1996) designs of meaning concept encapsulated in the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies Theoretical Framework to gauge the relevance of lesson study, I sought to explore a deeper understanding of …

The purpose of this case study was to describe 1st-year teachers’ experiences in a West Central Georgia school system induction program and to identify the retention-supporting needs these new teachers reported as part …

Conceptualization Of Steam Education In The Elementary Classroom, Virginia Olmert Mccullough

Theses and Dissertations

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) education is an instructional approach to education in which students demonstrate creative approaches in experiential, inquiry-based learning within the STEM disciplines. Despite the national focus on STEAM education, there exists considerable uncertainty as to what constitutes STEAM education and how classroom educators make sense of their conceptualization of STEAM in their classroom within the state of Georgia.

The method of conceptualization is the internal processing of thoughts that produce new ideas or knowledge. This descriptive case study offers thoughtful new insights on how educators in a STEAM-certified elementary school in a school district …

Research studies in the past have linked math ability to success in economics courses. However, most of these studies have utilized a quantitative study design with limited studies testing the influence of math interventions on student’s academic ability in economics courses. This study will use a convergent mixed-methods research design to quantitatively measure the impact of a Math intervention on High School 11th and 12th grade Economics students and qualitatively observe student engagement and motivation during the intervention. A causal-comparative research design will be utilized for the quantitative strand to compare math ability in economics courses between students who participated …

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Relationship Between Teacher Mindset, Student Mindset, And Student Achievement In Reading Among K-8 Students, Jennifer Delaney

Theses and Dissertations

Educators face a challenge, specifically related to the development of non-cognitive skills, mindset, and student achievement. Currently, the focus of educators is on academic skills; however, research shows that non-cognitive skills, including mindset, can account for 75% of a student’s achievement (Peterson, 2018). Social cognitive theory and mindset theory suggest that mindset affects educators and learners at all levels. The purpose of this non-experimental, correlational design study is to examine the relationship between non-cognitive factors, teacher mindset, student mindset, and student achievement in reading. The population is 351 students and 27 faculty members. This study utilizes a non-experimental, correlational design …

A Mathematics Teacher's Learning Through Reflection-In-Action, Theodore J. Rupnow, David Barker Jul 2021

A Mathematics Teacher's Learning Through Reflection-In-Action, Theodore J. Rupnow, David Barker

Perspectives In Learning

In this study, I investigated the learning of one secondary mathematics teacher through observations in two class periods. I analyzed his learning in relation to the communities of practice framework and found reflection-in-action was instrumental in his learning. I characterized the teacher’s reflection-in-action with the descriptors: developmental, hypothetical, and experimental. Developmental reflection-in-action involved the development of new understandings or practices. Hypothetical reflection-in-action involved imagined future situations. Experimental reflection-in-action involved repeated trials. I propose that the use of a cycle of reflection-in-action in professional communities may have a positive impact on teacher learning.

Supporting Students After A Concussion: School Administrators’ Perspectives, Tricia M. Kasamatsu, Tamara C. Valovich Mcleod, Johna K. Register, Cailee E. Welch Bacon

Perspectives In Learning

Students with a concussion may experience challenges when returning to school and completing schoolwork. Therefore, students may require temporary academic support throughout the recovery process. The purpose of this study was to examine school administrators’ perceptions of the return to school process and provision of academic adjustments (AA) after concussion. Online surveys were analyzed using a series of descriptive, chi-square, and Mann Whitney tests. School administrators strongly agreed a concussion can affect school performance and were supportive of providing AA for symptomatic students. More school administrators with access to an athletic trainer and who completed concussion training had an established …

Preparing Students For Civic Engagement In The Era Of `Fake News’, Nathan J. Combes Jul 2021

Preparing Students For Civic Engagement In The Era Of `Fake News’, Nathan J. Combes

Perspectives In Learning

I recommend that instructors allow students to determine the content for Introduction to American Government. I also recommend that instructors assign students to conduct independent research on each unit of American Government rather than assigning a textbook. There are numerous benefits to implementing these practices. Students take ownership of their education and feel empowered to fill gaps in knowledge. Students are more prepared for class. It allows course content to match current events in real time. Students learn how to analyze the credibility of various sources. Class conversations are more dynamic. Students develop a better understanding of opinions that …

Stand And Deliver: An Epistemologically-Driven Perspective Of College Lecture, Bonnie Bost Laster, Matthew Davis Jul 2021

Stand And Deliver: An Epistemologically-Driven Perspective Of College Lecture, Bonnie Bost Laster, Matthew Davis

Perspectives In Learning

Current pedagogical trends reveal lecture is steadily losing favor as contemporary techniques (e.g., constructivist, experiential, and flipped) gain popularity in higher education. While these techniques have merit and evidence for their use is compelling, we contend that lecture need not be abandoned entirely. With support from personal epistemological theories, as well as research on student preference, we purport that there is still a place for lecture in the modern academy. We consider students’ personal epistemological maturation during the college years; namely, the ways in which students view and construct their knowledge and beliefs. We posit that active lecture may be …

Teachers’ Perceptions On Movement As A Teaching Tool, Mollie Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Purposeful movement integration adds movement into the content areas with the physical activity involving the content (for example, math stations that involve students moving around the room). For background on the topic, student benefits, teachers' perspectives, constraints with movement, and teacher professional learning were researched. A quantitative study was conducted to investigate teachers’ change in perspectives and knowledge on purposeful movement intervention as well as increase the frequency of student movement experiences during and after a virtual professional development course. The results of a Hoteling’s T-Squared test concluded that there was a significant difference in the perceptions and knowledge of …

Implications For Instructional Coaching Using Mindset Theory And Multiplier Model, Kathryn Murphy Breedlove

Theses and Dissertations

The role of an instructional coach varies slightly from location to location, but the commonalities of instructional coaching include job-embedded professional development that supports classroom-based, individualized partnerships of collaboration. In an effort to further investigate implications for instructional coaching using the multiplier model and mindset theory, a qualitative multicase study was conducted in an effort to answer the following questions: 1) How does receiving multiplier traits feedback when having an overall multiplier factor of greater than zero affect instructional coaches' perspectives of their influence? 2) What commonalities and differences do the cases studied share within their responses to their Multipliers …
