Nf526 Spring Millers, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein
Nf526 Spring Millers, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Biology, migration, and management of spring millers.
Millers can be abundant in and around homes each year, especially in May and early June. At this time of year, the moths are most likely the adult stage of the army cutworm, a common pest of wheat and alfalfa.
When millers emerge and begin to move westward in the spring, area residents have little recourse but to patiently await their departure. There are a few tactics, however, that can help lessen moth activity in and around homes:
Keep outside lighting to a minimum. These night-flying moths are attracted to lights. A porch …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide explains the basics of veterinary vaccine syringe cleaning and care.
Inadequately cleaned vaccine syringes are often responsible for localized infections associated with vaccination. Swellings around the injection site is common, especially when killed vaccines such as clostridial bacterins are given subcutaneously. Generally, these swellings can be considered good evidence that the animal is developing a proper immune response, but if the injection site swelling is greater than a small hen's egg, the swelling may be due to infection and should be examined.

Ec02-178 Precision Agriculture: On-The-Go Vehicle-Based Soil Sensors, Viacheslav I. Adamchuk, Paul J. Jasa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Imagine that you are entering an unknown field and would like to estimate the productivity of the unfamiliar soil. You may pick up a handful of soil to evaluate its color and texture. You also can feel how difficult it is to break a clod apart, roll it into a ball or press out a ribbon. After repeating this procedure at different field locations, soil depths and times, you get a feeling of both spatial and temporal soil variability. Some of this variability can explain the non-uniformity of crop yield. If you collect soil samples and send them to a …

G02-1451 Climate Change And Winter Wheat: What Can We Expect In The Future?, Albert Weiss, Cynthia J. Hays
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide will explain how climate changes at the end of this century will affect winter wheat production. Although it doesn't make daily headlines, global warming that results from climate changes will present challenges for current and future generations. While scientists may disagree about what causes current climate change, there is general agreement that a change is happening now and will continue for some time. As humans, it doesn't matter much whether the air temperature is 92 degrees or 97 degrees - either way we tend to be uncomfortable. However, a 5 degree temperature change can have dramatic implications for …

Ec02-153 Selecting Alfalfa Varieties For Nebraska 2002, Bruce Anderson, Michael Trammell, Charles A. Shapiro, Patrick E. Reece
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Yield potential, pest resistance and seed price should be considered when selecting alfalfa varieties in Nebraska. The most important variety decision on many farms and ranches is the selection of alfalfa. The choice of alfalfa variety affects production for three to 10 or more years, whereas varieties of annual crops can be changed every year. Many alfalfa varieties are available from private and public plant breeders. Over the years, yield trials conducted at widely distributed Nebraska locations have tested most varieties sold in the state.

Ocean: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver
Ricks Curriculum Units Series
An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …
Determinants Of Teachers' Intentions To Teach Physically Active Physical Education Classes, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Robert C. Eklund, Brett Reed
Determinants Of Teachers' Intentions To Teach Physically Active Physical Education Classes, Jeffrey J. Martin, Pamela Hodges Kulinna, Robert C. Eklund, Brett Reed
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
The purpose of the present investigation was to examine determinants of teachers' intentions to teach physically active physical education classes (i.e., spend at least 50% of class time with the students engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity). Based on the theories of reasoned action, planned behavior, and self-efficacy, a model was examined hypothesizing that teachers' intentions were determined by subjective norm, attitude, perceived behavioral control, and self-efficacy. Using hierarchical regression analyses, the theories of reasoned action and planned behavior were supported by accounting for 65% of the variance in intention due to the main effects of attitude and subjective …
Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger
Nf584 Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, Patrick E. Reece, Ivan G. Rush, David D. Baltensperger
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebFact addresses how to deal with an inadequate supply of forage for range beef cattle because of drought. Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited …
