The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) (also known as the common brown rat) is a destructive pest. Found in and around towns and farms throughout Nebraska, these rodents eat and contaminate large amounts of feed, damage structures by their gnawing and burrowing, and spread diseases that affect livestock and humans.
Ec92-125 On-Farm Trials For Farmers Using The Randomized Complete Block Design, Phil Rzewnicki
Ec92-125 On-Farm Trials For Farmers Using The Randomized Complete Block Design, Phil Rzewnicki
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Farmers are interested in evaluating new agricultural practices on their own farms. To produce results credible to themselves, other farmers, and researchers, a systematic method of testing should be used. If a comparison of agricultural practices results in one practice yielding a few more bushels of crop than another, this does not necessarily mean it is a more valuable practice. The difference may simply be due to field variation or chance.
This circular discusses the on-farm trials and incorporation of the two basic requirements in designing experiments: randomization and replication.

• provides a varied habitat for many wildlife species;
• protects the soil from wind and water erosion;
• preserves a "germplasm bank" for many plant species that may become important for yet unknown uses;
• purifies and enhances the environment by cleasing the air, filtering the runoff to streams, increasing the intake of precipitation, and aiding …

Rp92-217 No. 6 Delivering On A Live Cattle Futures Contract, Al Wellman
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
A producer who hedges with a live cattle futures contract normally will offset the futures position by buying a futures contract and selling the cattle on the cash market. However, there may be a time when it is advantageous to make delivery of the cattle against the contract. In fact, the potential or alternative for delivery is an important necessary contract feature.
Live cattle futures follow a Certificate of Delivery procedure, the details are covered later in this Fact Sheet. Mid-America Exchange delivery units equal one-half the size and have the same delivery conditions as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) …
Rp92-217 No. 19 Cost Of Grain Storage, J. William Uhrig
Rp92-217 No. 19 Cost Of Grain Storage, J. William Uhrig
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Grain marketing decisions are among the toughest the farm owner/operator or manager must make. Grain producers store grain to speculate on receiving higher prices, earn a return above storage costs, or to take advantage of government programs. Prices must increase enough to cover the additional costs, or forward contract prices must exceed current prices by more than the cost of storage in order to justify forward pricing. The gain in prices received can come from both changes in price level and changes in basis.
This research publication discusses all the areas of the cost of grain storage.

G92-1093 Use Of Animal Drugs In Livestock Management, Duane N. Rice, Barbara E. Straw
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
How to handle antibiotics and other drugs to prevent residues in meat while maintaining an effective animal health program.
Use of animal drugs in food animal production must be accepted as a responsibility rather than a right when trying to improve animal health. Drugs should be used to enhance a health program and not as a substitute for good management.
Disease prevention is based on good nutritional and environmental factors, sanitation, and the use of a complete herd health program. Use of vaccines for common diseases and in some cases segregation or culling of infected animals is important. Good management …

G92-1071 Ridge Plant Systems: Weed Control, Robert N. Klein, Gail A. Wicks, Alex Martin, Russell S. Moomaw, Fred Roeth, Robert G. Wilson, Paul J. Jasa
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Advantages and disadvantages of the ridge plant system, weed control before and at planting and economics of the system are discussed. Ridge planting combines tillage and herbicides to achieve improved weed control in row crops. Crop seed is planted into ridges formed during cultivation and/or ditching of the previous crop. In ridge planting, the planter follows the old row and ridge clearing sweeps or disks move the surface soil, residue and much of the weed seed out of the row. Weed seeds are deposited between the rows where, upon germination, they can be controlled with cultivation. Two cultivations are generally …
G92-1115 Corn Quality For Industrial Uses, David S. Jackson
G92-1115 Corn Quality For Industrial Uses, David S. Jackson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Characteristics of corn used by industry are discussed here. Publications frequently refer to the term "Corn Quality," but this term means little without being placed in context. The Official U.S. Standards for Grain defines Corn Quality for typical marketing transactions involving grain marketed in the United States. It rates corn quality based on purity, color, the amount of broken and foreign material, total numbers of damaged kernels (including heat-damaged, sprouted, frosted, weather or ground damaged, moldy, diseased), heat-damaged kernels, stones, moisture, and test weight. Official standards, however, are only useful as general indicators of grain quality.

G92-1102 Fertilizer Management For Dry Edible Beans, James A. Schild, Dave Nuland, Gary W. Hergert, Robert G. Wilson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Soil sampling and proper fertilization of dry beans will assist the producer in obtaining consistent top yields. Excellent yields of high quality dry beans can be obtained in western Nebraska. Traditional growing areas are the Panhandle and the southwestern part of Nebraska near Colorado. The highest bean yields are produced on fertile soils. Dry beans respond to fertilizer if the soil test shows the nutrient to be in the low to medium fertility range.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Canola, which produces a vegetable oil low in saturated fat, has potential for becoming an alternative crop for Nebraska agriculture. Canola produces an oil that has the lowest saturated fat content of any vegetable oil. Today, there is an increasing demand for this oil by diet-conscious consumers. In 1985, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognized rapeseed and canola as two different species, based on their content and uses. Rapeseed oil is used in industry, while canola oil is used for human consumption. High erucic acid rapeseed (HEAR) oil contains 22-60 percent erucic acid, while low erucic acid rapeseed …

G92-1070 Feeding Dairy Cattle For Proper Body Condition Score, Rick Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown
G92-1070 Feeding Dairy Cattle For Proper Body Condition Score, Rick Grant, Jeffrey F. Keown
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes feeding and management practices that allow the producer to control body condition throughout lactation and the dry period.
Body condition score is a critical measure of a dairy feeding system's effectiveness. Adequate body fat reserves promote milk production, reproductive efficiency, and herd longevity. Excessively fat cows or overly thin cows run much greater risks of metabolic problems, lower milk yield, poor conception rates, and dystocia (difficult calving). Failure to attain proper body condition or rapid changes in body condition score during early lactation may indicate problems in herd health or feeding management.

This NebGuide focuses on the best sources of minerals and vitamins, current requirements for production, and feeding practices to best meet these requirements and promote health and productivity of dairy cattle. Dairy cattle require at least 17 minerals and three vitamins in their diet for optimal milk production, reproductive performance, and herd health. Although classical mineral or vitamin deficiency symptoms are rare, in many cases under- and overfeeding of certain minerals and vitamins does occur. Even small imbalances or deficiencies can develop into reproductive, health, and milk production problems. As herd milk production averages in Nebraska climb, it will become …
