Effectiveness Of The Edl Study Skills Library In A Seventh Grade Reading Program, Robert Winn Elfers
All Master's Theses
This paper presents an evaluation of a study skills program used in a seventh grade reading class. This program is designed to teach study skills on an individualized basis, allowing the student to work at his own pace and on his own level. Two groups of students were involved. The group using the program showed slightly higher improvement on the post-tests. Recommendations included using the program in a reading class and that the teacher closely follow the progress of each student.

A Descriptive Study Of Certain Characteristics In Which The Language Of A Class Of Third Grade Negro Children Differs From Standard English, Columbus Nelson Sanders
All Master's Theses
Children come to school speaking the language of their speech community. For some children, the language in their speech community is a variety of English that differs from standard English or what may be called "school English." These children may experience great difficulties in speaking standard English. This problem is one of social class dialect rather than regional language variation. The purpose of this study is to describe certain characteristics in which the language of a class of third grade Negro children differs from standard English.

An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
An Analysis Of The Rules Describing The Use Of Subordination, Mildred Eastwood Mcbride
Graduate Student Research Papers
Subordination is not Mt. Everest, but neither is it a molehill which can be covered in one easy step, and this is what our textbooks try to do. Unfortunately, there is no single easy way to teach the use of subordination, and this paper cannot offer any positive remedy for the inadequacies of our college handbooks. It will, however, discuss the varieties of opinions about the subject, explore several possible approaches, and offer some suggestions for a changed method of teaching subordination to our students.

Enrichment And Reorganization Of The Kellogg School Library, Kenneth Adkins
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
For several decades it had been recognized that the American school had been changing from a classical school with a select student body and a narrow curriculum, into a large public school with varying abilities, interests and offerings. It had been recognized that the need for children's literature had become more acute than ever before. Kellogg School is structuring and carrying out a long-range plan for a better education for boys and girls, had established a philosophy of teaching and learning and had set out general and specific goals. In order that the teaching and learning be congenial with the …

Enrichment And Supplemental Materials In An Adequate Reading Program In Grades One Through Five, John C. Ayers
Enrichment And Supplemental Materials In An Adequate Reading Program In Grades One Through Five, John C. Ayers
Graduate Student Research Papers
It was the purpose of this study to consider materials for enrichment and supplemental purposes to strengthen the present reading program as it now exists in the Castle Rock Elementary School. The writer has found, however, that while materials do have a prominent role in reading, materials alone can not support an adequate program unless a more complete picture of the reading process is established and operating. This study will therefore concern itself with supplemental and enrichment materials as an integral part of the complete program and not necessarily as entities in themselves.

Instituting And Administering An Individualized Reading Program In The Granite Falls Elementary School, Donald F. Van Liew
Graduate Student Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to review the literature written about different programs individualizing the reading program so as to enable the writer to judge their worth in a given situation. The area of reading was chosen for this study because more time is spent teaching and practicing reading skills than is spent on any other subject. Further, the writer will attempt to present the steps used in instituting a program in a school. Implementing or revising any program takes careful analysis by an entire staff, but certain steps and procedures should be followed after the staff has agreed …

Primary School Studies
First published in 1952, this pamphlet explores the fundamental and far-reaching values of reading, and considers the nature, purpose and place of a full reading programme in the school curriculum. It advocates for the achievement of a balanced school reading program which includes learning to read, understanding that reading leads to improved social competence, and promotes reading as a valuable leisure activity. It discusses approaches to determining reading readiness, preparing for reading and developing reading interests, as well as providing methods and materials for the teaching of reading in the primary grades.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The textbook, an important factor in public school education, is nowhere so wonderfully developed as in the United States. It occupies a more important position in our educational system than it does in the systems of many foreign countries. In fact, most of the teaching in our schools today revolves around the textbook - the cause of much criticism by many writers. They deplore the fact that both our teachers and pupils are dependent on textbooks.

Primary Handwriting And Its Correlation With Other Primary Activities, Evelyn L. Pfeiffer
Bachelors’ Theses
A brief study of the countless ages covered by the development of writing from its most primitive state to that employed by the nations of today, and how our own alphabet has reached such a high stage of development through the slow but steady improvements made by our ancestors may help us to realize the importance and great magnitude of this heritage and inspire us to teach it to our children in such a way as to give them "a common understanding of the past and a vision of the future." It may help them to know about the thoughts …
