The Architectonics Of Information: Ancient Topical Thought And Postmodern Information, Catherine L. Hobbs
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
This paper examines the usefulness of thought patterns from ancient rhetoric as they have been appropriated historically and as potentially applicable concepts for the present and future in today's interlinked electronic environment.
An earlier version of this paper, first delivered as part of a panel at the Rhetoric Society of America meeting at Tucson in May 1 996, was delivered and published as "The Architectonics of Information: Ancient Topical Thought and Postmodern Cognition" in Proceedings of the Mid-America Symposium on E merging Computer Technologies, October 1 996. Seeing History Through Literature: An Interdisciplinary Unit On World War Ii, William White
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to design and develop a model interdisciplinary unit combining English and history at the junior year. To accomplish this purpose, current research and literature on integration was reviewed. The project we describe in this article emerged from thinking about Fridays. While the Monday through Thursday schedule at Renaissance Middle School in Montclair, New Jersey covers the traditional distribution of curriculum, Fridays are dedicated to nine-week cycles of two hour sessions. Each session involves in-depth work focusing on five themes: Aviation, Genetics, Building Bridges, Community Service and this, the Oral History Project. Because the school is thematically organized around core notions of justice, history, social movements and "renaissances" (that is, Italian, Harlem and Montclair), we structured this project around the deeply contested history of desegregation of the Montclair public …
Character Education In The Schools, Holly Mcleod Gilliland
Character Education In The Schools, Holly Mcleod Gilliland
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this master's paper is to familiarize educators with character education as a curricular entity and to demonstrate that it is worthwhile to intermingle character education into a program without detracting from students' core subjects. A review of literature indicates that there is a character crisis among youth in America. Although character education has been present in some form in the earliest schools up to now, this intervention is being resurrected in schools with assistance from national organizations such as Character Education Partnership and CHARACTER COUNTS!
Ideas for the inclusion of character education are presented followed by a …
The Teaching Of Digital Vs. Traditional Photography, Carolyn Prins
The Teaching Of Digital Vs. Traditional Photography, Carolyn Prins
Graduate Research Papers
I have been teaching photography in the traditional sense for over fifteen years. I have seen photography shift in those years from a silver-based medium to encompass the digital world, a filmless kind of art. The two media are very different, and the teaching of them are correspondingly different, yet the end result should be the same: a student who can produce an image that is visually satisfying, whether the image is informative in nature or is considered fine art. In this project, I want to compare instructional strategies for traditional photography tools to teaching strategies for digital photography.
Expending The Content Of Curriculum : Implementation Of The World Wide Web Into Foreign Language Teaching, Ping Gao
Graduate Research Papers
This study investigated the factors that impact the decisions to integrate the World Wide Web into foreign language curriculum. This inquiry involved a combined approach -- including a survey and a case study. The current status of the technology application in foreign language instruction at a state university in the United States was assessed through the survey. It revealed that integrating the Web was the least immediate concern of most foreign language professors due to their limited knowledge, their inadequate training, and their ambiguous attitudes. A case study of an innovator's practice of integrating the Web in foreign language instruction …

Integration Of Faith And Learning In Christian Higher Education : Professional Development Of Teachers And Classroom Implementation, Constance Chibuzo Nwosu
Dissertations
Problem. Few studies have focused on effective professional development programs that enhance faith-learning implementation in the Christian higher education classroom, and little has been documented about what integration of faith and learning actually looks or sounds like in Christian higher education classrooms.
Purpose. This study had four purposes:
- To describe the training processes used for preparing teachers in Christian higher education for implementing EFL in the classroom.
- To compare these methodologies with Jesus’ training methodologies and research-based professional development programs.
- To understand how teachers in Christian higher education classrooms defined IFL.
- To identify and document some exemplary practices of faith …

Holistic Approaches In A Secondary Discipline-Based Art Education Curriculum, Jennifer Hicks Limle
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The primary objective of this study is to examine the possible advantages of incorporating the principles and strategies of whole language to a secondary art education curriculum. Reading, or the process of decoding symbols, is an integral part of the learning process. It is particularly pertinent to the three academically oriented components of Discipline-Based Art Education: art criticism, art history, and the study of aesthetics. The holistic strategies promoted by the whole language movement, may be characterized by an emphasis on written responses and experience-oriented, student-centered curriculum. This approach is expected to enhance the DBAE curriculum.
The possibility that primary …

A Poetry Curriculum For Primary Teachers, Janice M. Matheny
A Poetry Curriculum For Primary Teachers, Janice M. Matheny
All Graduate Projects
This project examined the role of poetry in language development and literacy acquisition in children. The review of current literature strongly supported the rationale for providing poetry experiences beginning at an early age and continuing on through the first few years of school. All stages of language development benefit from exposure to rhythm and rhyme. Poetry can be there to bridge the gap as young children speak their first words, read their first book and write their first sentence. Included is a poetry curriculum centering on the theme of Playground Rhymes. It was specifically written for primary teachers. The research …
