Nf01-458 Internet Connectivity Glossary Of Terms
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Refers to size of pipe through which data can be sent. The greater the bandwidth, the greater the amount of data the line can handle. A full page of English text is about 16,000 bits. A fast modem can move about 15,000 bits in one second. Full-motion full-screen video would require roughly 10,000,000 bits per second, depending on compression. Technically, bandwidth is the width of a transmission line measured in Hertz.

Nf01-454 Information About Foot And Mouth Disease For Nebraska Residents, David R. Smith
Nf01-454 Information About Foot And Mouth Disease For Nebraska Residents, David R. Smith
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral disease of cloven-hooved animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep, and deer. The disease is not commonly fatal, but causes extreme production losses in affected herds. Clinical signs of the disease include lameness, excessive salivation, reluctance to eat, abortion and blister-like erosions on the mouth and feet. Affected animals are debilitated and may not recover to their original production levels. The disease has long been recognized as one of the most economically devastating diseases of livestock.
G1437 Green Potatoes: The Problems And The Solution, Alexander D. Pavlista
G1437 Green Potatoes: The Problems And The Solution, Alexander D. Pavlista
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This publication outlines how potatoes turn green and form a harmful substance which can cause an allergic reaction, and how to avoid this development. Green potato tubers are easily identified by their surface coloration. This green coloration ("greening" also called "sun-burning") can be as much as a half-inch deep in severe cases. French fries made from green potatoes will have a green end and potato chips will have a green edge. Associated with greening is the formation of a natural chemical that can cause allergic reactions and illness. This publication outlines how potatoes turn green and how to avoid such …

Nf01-488 Creating A Strong Family: Quality Time In Great Quantity, John Defrain
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Societies are often fueled by the platitude, which can be defined as conventional, hackneyed wisdom packaged for general consumption. This common sense created for common living is called upon so often in day-to-day speech that we sometimes fail to recognize it for what it often really is.

G01-1434 Controlling Beaver Damage, Dallas R. Virchow, John M. Hobbs, Ronald Fryda, Scott E. Hygnstrom
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes beaver biology and behavior and characterizes the types of damage caused by them. It suggests control methods and equipment and describes legal restrictions.
The beaver (Castor canadensis) is the largest rodent in North America. Adults weigh about 40 pounds and have been known to weigh up to 60 pounds or more. Beavers are admired for being industrious, curious, and social. Historically, both the American beaver and the European beaver (Castor fiber) were overharvested to near extinction. In recent decades, however, both species have been rapidly increasing.

Ec01-158 Integrating Management Objectives And Grazing Strategies On Semi-Arid Rangeland, Patrick E. Reece, Jerry D. Volesky, Walter H. Schacht
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Rangelands account for about half of Nebraska's total land area or about 24 million acres. Much of these expansive natural resource areas are in the semi-arid climatic region of Nebraska where grazing management decisions have a profound effect on ranch survival.
The educational object of this circular is to explain management practices that optimize the sustainability of rangeland-based enterprises. Additionally a decision-support tool is provided for selecting grazing systems best suited to livestock production and natural resource management objectives.
Nf01-474 Creating A Strong Family: The Greatest Gift A Father Can Give His Children, John Defrain
Nf01-474 Creating A Strong Family: The Greatest Gift A Father Can Give His Children, John Defrain
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Though as a culture we may have gotten better at encouraging fathers to be good fathers, the fact remains that mothers, in general, still spend more time with children and have more responsibility for their day-to-day care. Mothers know this. Fathers know this. Many families, including my own, do not particularly like how our society is designed in this regard. The game is still rigged toward mothers being more responsible for kids, and fathers having more responsibility for earning money, though the game is changing ever so slowly. This is sad to me, because the joy of being with children …

G01-1418 Turf In The Landscape (Revised April 2003), Anne Streich, Steven Rodie, Roch E. Gaussoin
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
To many people, landscape design means choosing the right tree, shrub or flower for a particular place. An important aspect of the landscape often overlooked, however, is the use of turf. Turf often becomes the leftover areas in the landscape rather than an integral design element.
Turf is a significant part of successful landscaping. This NebGuide explores the benefits and uses of turf in the landscape.

G01-1430 Using The Sugar Roll Technique To Detect Varroa Mites In Honey Bee Colonies, Marion D. Ellis, Paul A. Macedo
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide describes a rapid and efficient technique for detecting and assessing varroa mite infestations. It uses powdered sugar to dislodge mites from bees.
The varroa mite was first discovered in the United States in 1987. Globally, it is the most important pest of honey bees and it has caused extensive losses in feral and managed colonies. Once introduced, varroa mites have never been eradicated from any country or region, and beekeepers must adopt an integrated pest management strategy to protect their colonies. Early detection and assessment of infestation levels are important components of a varroa management plan. Since varroa …

Nf01-486 Creating A Strong Family: Why Are Families So Important?, John Defrain

Marriage and family are perhaps society's oldest and most resilient institutions. From the beginning of human life, people have grouped themselves into families to find emotional, physical and communal support. Although in recent years social commentators have predicted the demise of both marriage and the family, they not only survive but continue to change and evolve. Family structures may vary around the world, and yet, the value of family endures.
