Student-Created Videos As Esl Homework Assignments, Griffin Childers

Master's Projects and Capstones

There is a constantly growing number of people around the world who are learning English as an additional language. A lot of innovation has been focused on classroom teaching techniques, but homework pedagogies are vastly underrepresented. In contrast to interesting and interactive classroom activities, homework assignments are often uninspiring, focusing on worksheet completion and memorization. This project is a workshop presentation to be given at ESL focused conferences such as the TESOL conference. The presentation will provide discussion and hands-on training to teachers to learn how to create effective homework assignments in which students will create and narrate short videos …

Purpose: Homework is an educational practice that has been implemented for many years. Research has shown that homework can have stringent effects on the well-being of students. To date, much of the research discusses the students’ and parents’ point of view on homework’s effects. Although teachers are the practitioners that develop and implement this practice, there is a dearth of research on teacher’s perspectives of homework’s effects on the well-being of students. In-home types of educational involvement such as monitoring homework and asking children about their school day were the most commonly reported behaviors, and utilizing community resources was found to be the least common type of parental involvement. Involvement type was predicted by parental demographic factors such as comfort with English language, educational background, and …

Empowering Esl Students For Out Of Classroom Learning, Jay Stanley Neuharth May 1995

Empowering Esl Students For Out Of Classroom Learning, Jay Stanley Neuharth

Dissertations and Theses

ESL students virtually swim in an environment rich in opportunities to learn English. Every billboard, newspaper, TV show, and person on the street provides new language. However, many ESL students do not take full advantage of this English environment. Often, English learning is viewed primarily as a classroom experience, when much more could be gained if students were learners outside the classroom, as well. That is the problem addressed in this thesis.

This problem was investigated through action research with the teacher/researcher's high intermediate level writing class at PSU. The teacher/researcher implemented a strategy to motivate students to learn outside …
