Chinese students who pursue their higher education in America benefit from the high quality of education in this country, which includes a richness and diversity of subjects, facility of research resources, and high academic standards. At the same time, they are under pressure, which results from culture shock and includes fear of failing, the language barrier, lack of class participation, homesickness, and isolation from their host culture, resulting in mental problems such as depression, frustration, and students dropping out. Male Chinese Student Transitions To Life In An American Secondary Catholic Boarding School, Matthew R. Mallon

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perceived experience of Chinese students during their first year attending a Catholic co-educational boarding and day school in the United States. Data collection included semi-structured interviews of five current students, a faculty and staff questionnaire, and an analysis of the schedule of events for the new boarding student orientation. The data was analyzed using the inductive method for data analysis. The data showed that Chinese students face challenges in four key areas: 1) academic adjustment; 2) social adjustment; 3) emotional support; and 4) developing autonomy. More than 690,000 foreign students studied in the United States during the 2009-10 academic year – a 17% increase in just two years. As these non-native English-speaking students continue to pour into our nation’s educational institutions, one question many educators have is: are these international students adequately prepared for the language and cultural demands they will face when they are competing in the classroom and in the job market with their U.S. born counterparts?
