Attributions For Change In Attitude Among Urban Elementary Parochial School Teachers Toward Children Who Speak Nonstandard English, Charles A. Saglio Jr.
Attributions For Change In Attitude Among Urban Elementary Parochial School Teachers Toward Children Who Speak Nonstandard English, Charles A. Saglio Jr.
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
A comparatively large number of African American children fail in urban schools. Hundreds of research studies concerning interpersonal expectations suggest a link between teacher expectancies and pupil performance. Researchers have found that teachers expect less of students who speak nonstandard English. Attempts to modify teachers' culturo-linguistic attitudes and expectations have been unsuccessful. While teachers' beliefs, theories, and attitudes change over time as a function of teaching experience, the mechanisms for change are unclear.
This study has attempted to uncover events to which teachers attribute a change in their culturo-linguistic attitudes. Once causal conditions for change have been identified, then those …
Multicultural Literature: The Need For Inclusion, Barbara Gripton
Multicultural Literature: The Need For Inclusion, Barbara Gripton
Masters Theses
Since Muskegon Public Schools serves a multicultural population, and since the canon of the textbooks used in the secondary language arts classes reflects neither this diverse population nor the current publications of the diverse cultures of the society, this study, in the form of a survey will show the need for the district to include literature contributed by ethnic minority writers from the American literature scene. The study shows the increasing need for such inclusion as well as offering rationale for doing so.; Finally, this paper will propose a three year pilot class, minority literature, similar to the minority history …
Afrocentric Curriculum Infusion In The Chattanooga Public Schools, Cynthia Joy Truex
Afrocentric Curriculum Infusion In The Chattanooga Public Schools, Cynthia Joy Truex
Honors Theses
Since its beginnings, the United States has been a country that welcomed diversity. "Respect for diversity is the hallmark of democracy," states Asa G. Hilliard m (1991-92). We are a society that is multicultural. This unique characteristic sets us apart from most other countries. The schools in the United States have recently been coming to terms with the realities of educating a multicultural student population. The term "multicultural education" is prominent in the field and nearly always sparks some controversy. However, there is general consensus about the need for some type of multiculturalism in America's schools. Though the United States …

The Study Of Malaysian Learners' Strategies While Studying A Second Language, Phoebe Christina Leong
The Study Of Malaysian Learners' Strategies While Studying A Second Language, Phoebe Christina Leong
Dissertations and Theses
In the past, the process by which language acquisition took place was largely ignored. Learning strategies were found to reveal much of the processes that occurred in a learner. In recent years, however, there was a greater emphasis in discovering learner's strategies because of the important role it played in helping the learner control his learning. Most researchers (e.g., Rubin 1975, Stern 1974, O'Malley 1985) emphasize not only the importance of learner strategies in helping the student direct his own learning, but they also emphasize the usefulness of transferring strategies used by successful learners to less successful learners. In order …

Cognitive Development Of Bilingual Korean-Americans In An Oregon School District, Kimiko Okada King
Cognitive Development Of Bilingual Korean-Americans In An Oregon School District, Kimiko Okada King
Dissertations and Theses
This research examined whether bilingualism would accelerate or hinder the cognitive as well as academic development of the Korean American individuals in an Oregon school district by analyzing the standardized test scores at grades 3, 5, 7, and 9. Eleven monolingual and 27 bilingual students released the Survey of Basic Skills (SBS) as well as Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) scores for this study.
The analyses of the test scores revealed that the Korean-American students in this school district were performing at a much higher level against the national norm (the 50th percentile), or the school district norm (the 75th percentile). …

Second Language Use In The Workplace: A Case Study Of A Dental Hygienist, Gina L. Crocetti
Second Language Use In The Workplace: A Case Study Of A Dental Hygienist, Gina L. Crocetti
Dissertations and Theses
This paper describes a case study of a non-native speaking (NNS) dental hygienist in her work environment. The subject learned English by learning to become a dental hygienist rather than through formal language education. Participant observation and discourse, event/network, and componential analyses were the methods used to analyze the subject's communication in her work setting.
The philosophical question as to how ESP differs from ESL is raised and elements of the work setting and the NNS workers' communication with interlocutors in that setting are identified to aid educators in teaching ESP courses. Questions ESP educators might address in designing and …

Elementary Spanish: An Integrated Cyclical Approach, Nelly Cicilia Mclauchlan
All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to produce the Spanish language component of an intermediate school's (Grades 4-6) integrated core curriculum. The Spanish language component was developed around congruent themes enumerated in a Language Arts block and integrated with other curricular areas. The themes or objective areas were outcome driven (goal oriented), core content generated (based on minimum competencies), holistic (integrated), incremental, and utililized spiralling (continuous review) and multisensory approaches. The Spanish component was structured around the key concepts of language learning called the Natural Approach of Stephen Krashen & Tracy Terrel (1983) and Total Physical Response or TPR of …
