“I’M Sorry Can You Repeat That?” How Do Monolingual Teachers Find Success In Linguistically Diverse Classroom Environments, Janine G. Bandayrel
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone Project is on monolingualism in teachers as a result of subtractive education who are or are going to be working in linguistically diverse classrooms. This is an important issue for monolingual educators or students whose selected career path revolves around education because diversity within California has been on a steady rise and more students are English Language Learners (ELLs) trying to adapt to the norm of English within schools. An argument is made that monolingual teachers are at a disadvantage when it comes to working in linguistically diverse classrooms and there is not enough support …
Si Se Puede: Continuous Barrier In Latino Education, Juan Daniel Sierra
Si Se Puede: Continuous Barrier In Latino Education, Juan Daniel Sierra
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone Project is on the continuous barriers in Latino Education. This is important because we are still seeing the same issues of inequities, lower academic attainment, and achievement gaps growing. Although these issues have been brought up and discussed, so little has been done to resolve them. By continuing to address these issues, it allows us to keep generating the conversation on what more we can do for Latino students in the United States. It allows us as a community to see the bigger picture and be able to formulate new plans that will close achievement …

Benefits Of Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program In Elementary School Students, Araceli Villegas
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many students that go into their first year in school tend to speak their language other than English, mostly Spanish in this case, may fall behind due to not being able to understand the material in another language that they have never heard before. Given this situation, the two-way bilingual immersion programs can benefit these elementary students and go above and beyond to meet the standards they have to meet in every elementary school year. This senior capstone research project examines the benefits of the two-way bilingual immersion programs provided to elementary school students. The results reveal that two-way bilingual …

This senior capstone examines and discusses the benefit of dual immersion programs on elementary school students through the use of literature review. The findings indicate how dual immersion …

Subtractive Bilingualism: Encouraged By English-Only In Schools, Affecting First Language, Aurora Jimenez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The lack of bilingual education in schools, leads children to be more socially engaged in English. This report aims to answer how it is that language develops? What role does bilingualism play in language development? How is subtractive bilingualism influenced by social interactions? This capstone project illustrates how English Language Learners (ELL) without bilingual language support might have a negative impact on their overall language development. Social interactions have a lot to do in language development and acquisition, and people grow to rely more on one language (which is known as subtractive bilingualism). This project bases its information on a …

This senior capstone will examine and discuss the effects of the different types of multicultural education on English Language Learning students through the use of literature review, interview with teachers and principals, and student surveys. The findings indicate …

Let's Talk: Increasing Communication With Dual- Immersion Parents, Carmina Tirado
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In 2016, California passed Proposition 58, which repealed Proposition 227. The latter proposition, passed in 1998, prohibited the use of non- English instruction in public schools across California. Since then, bilingual education programs such as dual- immersion, or two-way immersion programs have seen a rise in enrollment. Due to its novelty, parental involvement is crucial for the success of the program. This Capstone project focuses on understanding the obstacles that parents of second language learner students, specifically those in dual-immersion programs face when it comes to their involvement. Several factors such as language barriers, parent/teacher misunderstanding, and time restraints, can …
