In 2001, the 77th Texas Legislature established a statewide BS/MD/DO pipeline program called the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) to increase opportunities for economically disadvantaged Texas students to access medical education. JAMP partners all of the state's four-year public and private colleges and universities with Texas's nine medical schools. The first JAMP students entered the undergraduate component of the program in 2003. This group of students and subsequent cohorts of entering students were recruited, tutored, counseled and mentored by health professional advisors known as JAMP Faculty Directors (JFDs).
