The following paper is a report on a class that was taught to elderly Cambodian refugees in the Philippine Refugee Processing Center in 1981. It covers the development of the class from its inception to its final party for '"graduation'". There were many hurdles for the students to overcome in their learning. The strategies that were used to aid the students in overcoming these are discussed and described. Adjusting To Life In Mexico – One Couple’S Adaptation Process And Suggestions For Coping, Michael D. Krauss

MA TESOL Collection

In this paper I present challenges which confronted Sharon Beckett, my partner, and me as we underwent the process of adapting to life in Mexico during a three month stay. Some of the issues are unique to a couple with our respective back grounds, but, many are applicable to any couple or individual traveling to Mexico or other foreign countries. I discuss some guidelines and principles of interacting which proved helpful to us in Mexico and also offer some suggestions for coping to couples or individuals going abroad. The primary source of data for the paper is a daily journal …

A Case Study Of A Child’S Acquisition Of Spanish As A Second Language, Jonathan Julian Jan 1983

A Case Study Of A Child’S Acquisition Of Spanish As A Second Language, Jonathan Julian

MA TESOL Collection

This paper is an individual case study of language acquisition. It is my intent to report the facts as they happened. The subject is my six-year-old stepdaughter, Gretchen, an energetic little girl who in the space of a year and a half achieved near-native proficiency in Spanish. She never attended one formal language class.

I have discovered through this study that dual cultural awareness through language allows for greater creativity within the individual and provides additional opportunity for personal growth and cognitive development. Certainly this has been true not only for the observed but for me, the observer, as well. …

Acquisition Of English "Wh" Questions By Native Haitian Creole Speakers: Evidence For A Rule Governed Interlanguage, Francis Marion Bailey

MA TESOL Collection

The study uses the concept of Inter-language to investigate the process of language acquisition of fourteen adult Haitian Creole speakers learning English as a second language. The research is focused upon the acquisition of predicate based and embedded "lffi" questions. An analysis of the data is presented that suggests that the subjects are using two learning strategies: over generalization and simplification. There is also data patterning that indicates that the introduction of the negative into a question is a significant factor in the subjects' inter-languages. The findings from the research tend to emphasize the utility of approaching language acquisition from …

Meeting The Challenges Of A Multi-Level Class, Valerie Berger Jan 1982

Meeting The Challenges Of A Multi-Level Class, Valerie Berger

MA TESOL Collection

This paper draws from my experiences teaching an intensive, multi-level, English as a Second Language class which students attended on an irregular basis. The first section considers the sociological factors which created this kind of learning situation. The second states my basic assumptions about teaching in an environment lacking both homogeneity and consistency. The third section relates strategies I developed to meet the unique demands of this circumstance.

Although this paper was a requirement for my Master of Arts in Teaching degree, I have written it to be of value to volunteers or other individuals having little formal training in …

A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome Jan 1982

A Handbook For Esl Teacher Training At Okinawa Christian School, Dan Jerome

MA TESOL Collection

The handbook has been designed for use as the text in a two or three day teacher-training course as well as a reference book of information useful throughout the academic year of the school. Because many of the ESL teachers at the school are inexperienced and/or untrained in the field, the information and suggestions have been written in non-technical language using a question/answer style that attempts to deal with the practical issues with which new teachers are most concerned. More than a “how-to” book, however, the handbook suggests matters of philosophical importance that will help teachers see beyond the immediate …

In this paper I propose a way of using rods in teaching ESOL that is consistent with my personal assumptions about teaching and learning. It is written for teachers with no or little previous experience working with rods.

The introduction of the paper tells of my own start in working with rods and why I feel rods to be an exciting and important learning tool. Next there is a step-by-step analysis of the application of rods in teaching the present, past, future, and perfect verb tenses. Finally I address ways of using rods to generate stories, with rods representing all …

A Set Of Student-Invested Materials For A Conversation Class, David J. Kehe, Peggy Dustin Kehe Jan 1982

A Set Of Student-Invested Materials For A Conversation Class, David J. Kehe, Peggy Dustin Kehe

MA TESOL Collection

This paper describes eleven speaking projects which have been developed around the beliefs that a conversation class is successful when:

- the focus is on the students talking, not the teacher talking

- the atmosphere is non-threatening

- the material is personally relevant

- the students use each other as sources of correction

Each project is comprised of two separate speaking activities. The first uses teacher-prepared material. The second consists of four steps in which students: (1) in groups, create material modeled after the teacher-prepared material, (2) have it checked by the teacher, (3) use it with the whole class.

A Personal Guideline For The Use Of Correction In The Classroom, Carol Ann Wilson Jan 1981

A Personal Guideline For The Use Of Correction In The Classroom, Carol Ann Wilson

MA TESOL Collection

Correction is an important aspect of teaching, one that ESL teachers face daily. At issue is the ability to match the teacher's goals or priorities with what is supposed to be taught or learned, and the specific teaching-learning environment.

The study presents my original definition of correction, the beginning reference point for this work, which is eventually compared to a new definition of correction. The evolution of the new definition is based upon documentation and analysis of five case studies and the systematic generation and development of a model for correction use.

The model is adaptable for use by any …

In this boarding school environment, I had additional duties that gave me the opportunity to learn about teenagers. I also gained some insight into culture and how to relate to these international students …
