Multicultural Education Policies And State Legislatures: Analyzing The Factors Affecting Policy Adoption, Leander D. Kellogg
Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)
Introduction: This study looks at the factors that contribute to the adoption of multicultural education policies in the fifty US state legislatures plus the District of Columbia. The demographics of the US are changing significantly. According to Frey (2011), “The 2010 census showed that among infants, almost half—49.8 percent—are minorities, and a quarter of these are Latinos.” Furthermore, it is now projected that by 2023 Whites will become a minority in the student populations nationwide and by 2042 Whites will be a minority within the general US population. In fact, according to the 2010 census there are already 11 states …

Qualitative Analysis Of The Impact Of A Cultural Partnership On The Cultural Orientation Of Undergraduates, Sadie Liedall, Sarah Lieske
Undergraduate Research Symposium
This study compared changes in the Cultural Orientation of four groups of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences the students experienced in the course did have an impact on the Cultural Orientation of each student. A convenience sample of 85 students registered for 4 sections during fall 2011. The course design provided for intercultural partnerships with individuals from diverse populations outside the classroom and for reflection on such interactions. Each student completed (1) minimum of 18 hours service learning at an agency with persons …

Racial Conflicts In Schools, Michael J. Martinez
Racial Conflicts In Schools, Michael J. Martinez
Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Research Exchange Conference
That racially motivated conflicts occur in schools is an indisputable fact that becomes evident upon review of both academic literature and popular media. Events such as the Jena 6 incident (Maxwell & Zehr, 2007), school wide racially motivated riots (latimes.com), and court rulings (theithican.org) are distressing examples that racial barriers are real and potentially dangerous for many students in this country. However, little is written about the nature of racial conflicts, including the actual process school leaders engage in when determining how or even whether to intervene in racial conflicts, and the affect those racial conflicts have on the school …

The Power Of The Teacher: Integrating Latino-Themed Literature In The K-12 Classroom, Ruth Quiroa, Susan Mcmahon, Barbara Evans, Francisco X. Alarcon
Western Suburban Literacy Initiative (WSLI) Conference
High quality books with culturally specific themes offer wonderful opportunities to access the background knowledge and personal connections of students with similar cultural heritage. However, the simple addition of the “right” multicultural books in the classroom is not enough to ensure that students engage in deep level responses involving culture. The teacher’s role in such conversations is critical and the focus of this session. Presenters will share examples from their work with students of Mexican origin and Mexican American-themed books published in the U.S. Participants will also have opportunities to take part in Book Clubs using Latino-themed children’s literature, respond …

After listening to a book on tape (or CD) and to oral and written prompts, students and family members wrote or drew responses in their Family Journals. During home visits and …
