Introduction: This study looks at the factors that contribute to the adoption of multicultural education policies in the fifty US state legislatures plus the District of Columbia. The demographics of the US are changing significantly. According to Frey (2011), “The 2010 census showed that among infants, almost half—49.8 percent—are minorities, and a quarter of these are Latinos.” Furthermore, it is now projected that by 2023 Whites will become a minority in the student populations nationwide and by 2042 Whites will be a minority within the general US population. Qualitative Analysis Of The Impact Of A Cultural Partnership On The Cultural Orientation Of Undergraduates, Sadie Liedall, Sarah Lieske

This study compared changes in the Cultural Orientation of four groups of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences the students experienced in the course did have an impact on the Cultural Orientation of each student. A convenience sample of 85 students registered for 4 sections during fall 2011. The course design provided for intercultural partnerships with individuals from diverse populations outside the classroom and for reflection on such interactions. This study measured changes in the intercultural competency of undergraduate students in a course, Human Relations in a Multicultural Society. The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is encouraging teacher preparation programs to foster and measure culturally responsive teaching. The hypothesis for this study was that the intentional, cross-cultural experiences of students will have an impact on the cultural competency of each student. This course is taught each semester at a Midwestern public university. High quality books with culturally specific themes offer wonderful opportunities to access the background knowledge and personal connections of students with similar cultural heritage. However, the simple addition of the “right” multicultural books in the classroom is not enough to ensure that students engage in deep level responses involving culture. This presentation describes a classroom-based homework project involving students of Mexican-origin, in a bilingual first grade classroom and a modification of the project by a reading specialist involving second language learners in Title I programs. Students were given backpacks to take home bi-weekly on a rotating basis filled with a tape recorder, their “Family Journal,” a picture book in Spanish (later in English), and a recording of the text. This collection consists of books originally written in Spanish by Latin American authors from many different countries, as well as bilingual books (Spanish and English), texts published in English with Latino themes, and some Spanish translations from recommended book lists.
