El Paso is a bicultural, bilingual community with a 76.6% Hispanic population. Combining El Paso’s population with that of its sister city, Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, our community is the largest metropolitan area on any international border in the world. Students at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) are mostly female, and 50% of the total student population is made up of first-generation college students. These demographics are accompanied by low socioeconomic and educational factors: 23.6% of local families live below the poverty level, compared to 12.5% nationally; 32.9% of 25-year-olds have not graduated from high school; 19% of …

The Effectiveness Of A Mixed Methodology Implemented In A Beginner’S Spanish Course To Develop The Four Language Skills: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

This present article seeks to provide a mixed methodological model for the development and implementation of a Teaching Module for Spanish as a Foreign Language in the face to face environment. The primary objective is to portray how methodological principles from different language teaching approaches - in this case, task based language teaching and cooperative learning - can be combined effectively in designing activities for face to face contexts. In this regard, empirical evidence is analysed in order to determine the effectiveness of the mixed methodology in the teaching-learning of Spanish as a Foreign Language in the said settings, in …

Computers And Their Suitability For Second And Foreign Language Error Correction, Kerwin A. Livingstone Nov 2011

Computers And Their Suitability For Second And Foreign Language Error Correction, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

This article is an attempt to ascertain the suitability of computers for second and foreign language (SL/FL) error correction, especially those made by SL/FL learners. For this purpose, the handling of such errors proposed in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) literature will be examined. Subsequently the technologies capable of evaluating student output and identifying and correcting Non-Native Speaker (NNS) errors will be examined. Though it will be made quite clear that the computer cannot substitute a human being in total language processing, some strengths of artificial intelligence in partial language processing will be pointed out and their suitability for L2 error …

La Evaluación De Un Modelo Metodológico Mixto Para Mejorar Las Habilidades Productivas Y Receptivas En Español Como Segunda Lengua: Un Estudio Cuasi-Experimental, Kerwin A. Livingstone

Kerwin A. Livingstone

Looking At School From The House Window: Learning From Turkish-American Parents’ Experiences With Early Elementary Education In The United States, Zeynep Isik-Ercan Sep 2011

Looking At School From The House Window: Learning From Turkish-American Parents’ Experiences With Early Elementary Education In The United States, Zeynep Isik-Ercan

Zeynep Isik-Ercan

This study is an in-depth investigation of the perspectives of Turkish immigrant parents on their children's early schooling in the United States (PreK-3). It specifically explores how these parents connect themselves or are disconnected from school culture, and how their socio-cultural understanding of education and teachers influence their relationships with schools. Using a qualitative research format, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 18 parents from 10 families. Findings suggest that Turkish parents negotiated the ways curriculum and instruction is constructed in American schools such as their assumption of the lack of academic rigor while they embraced sound pedagogies the …

Thinking About The Earth, Sun And Moon: Urban Second Graders As Investigators., Zeynep Isik-Ercan Sep 2011

Thinking About The Earth, Sun And Moon: Urban Second Graders As Investigators., Zeynep Isik-Ercan

Zeynep Isik-Ercan

This study strove for the application of inquiry based learning based on the principles of a constructive classroom environment versus traditional teaching where the learners are silenced and only interacting with their teacher. The results indicated that when given the chance and support, culturally and linguistically diverse children can better utilize their abilities through the opportunities that the inquiry based learning provides such as independent and group learning processes, role taking, and having more choices.

Ya Me Fui! When English Learners Consider Leaving School, Jeanmarie Hamilton Boone Jul 2011

Ya Me Fui! When English Learners Consider Leaving School, Jeanmarie Hamilton Boone

Jeanmarie Hamilton Boone

This study examines narratives of English learners who have either dropped out or considered dropping out as a result of their experience in high school. This research seeks to determine at which point students left or considered leaving school, which often goes undetected in traditional quantitative data collection methods. The common themes that emerged in these narratives are examined in light of existing research. Researchers have suggested the following reasons English learners leave high school before earning a high school diploma: employment, limited English skills, disciplinary problems, poor grades, and not feeling a “sense of belonging” to the school. The …

Navigating Tensions In The Process Of Change: An English Educator’S Dilemma Management In The Revision And Implementation Of A Diversity-Infused Methods Course, Mileidis Gort, Wendy J. Glenn

Mileidis Gort

In response to growing concerns among faculty regarding the lack of attention to the bilingual student population in our pre-service teacher education program, the authors engaged in a shared self-study of the process of revising and implementing a secondary English methods course with explicit attention to the special needs of bilingual/bicultural learners. The paper describes how the second author, an English educator, with support from the first author, a mentor/colleague in bilingual education, identified and negotiated tensions and dilemmas that arose in a process of curricular transformation toward culturally and linguistically responsive teacher education practice. The study highlights several points …

Use Of Resources In Second Language Writing Socialization, Gulbahar Beckett, Miyoung Nam May 2011

Use Of Resources In Second Language Writing Socialization, Gulbahar Beckett, Miyoung Nam

Gulbahar Beckett

This study investigated five Korean ESL graduate students’ access to and utilization of professional and social resources in the process of socializing into American academic writing discourse. As a pilot study for a larger scale research study, data for the present study were collected during a four-‐month period through interviews. Findings suggest that socialization into American academic writing discourse was difficult, frustrating, and disempowering as well as restricted by lack of coordination among resources. Based on their prior experience and second-‐hand information provided by peers, the participants remained legitimate peripheral passive users of university resources such as the writing center, …

Morality, Relationality, And Listening Pedagogy In Language Education, Bradley Baurain Dec 2010

Morality, Relationality, And Listening Pedagogy In Language Education, Bradley Baurain

Bradley Baurain

Listening pedagogy in language education treats listening proficiency almost exclusively as a function or skill, the purpose of which is to generate products or outcomes desired by language users. Though listening is rhetorically acknowledged to be an active and complex process of making meanings within contexts and relationships, in practice teacher education and pedagogical discourse treat listening simply as a linguistic transaction and listening pedagogy as a technical and instrumental process of skill building, with the goal of enabling learners fluently to perform such transactions. Such a means-to-ends orientation, however, is inadequate or insufficient to encompass holistic moral and relational …
