Teaching During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multiple Case Study Exploring Faculty Experiences In Fostering Positive Interaction With U.S.-Based Undergraduate Students, Lauren J. Bullock
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
COVID-19 changed how faculty members approached teaching in higher education in the United States. This study specifically looks at the changes in faculty-student interaction (FSI) during the COVID-19 pandemic. While extensive literature exists on the topic from the student perspective, the disruption in education necessitated a more extensive study of the faculty perspective. A multiple-case study methodology was employed to explore the experiences of a small cohort of faculty members at a single institution and how they fostered positive interactions with students from Spring 2019 through Spring 2023. The data collected included semi-structured interviews, course syllabi, teaching philosophies, and a …

From The Lens Of (In)Visibility: A Photovoice Inquiry Into How Community Colleges Can Advance Filipino/A/X American Student Resilience, Rangel Velez Zarate
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The dearth of research on Filipino/a/x American (FilAm) community college students perpetuates the narrative that they are regarded as “invisible,” receiving limited academic and social support. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent violence and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) has exacerbated the already distressing academic and racialized experiences of FilAm students.
In this qualitative study, nine FilAm students who attended a community college in the Western United States participated in an online photovoice project which visualized their personal reflections and specific academic needs through digital photos and written narratives. Findings from this study indicated …
Art And Exceptionality: Addressing Art Fear And Fear Of Difference In An Introductory Art Course, Arthur Hochman, Kelli J. Esteves
Art And Exceptionality: Addressing Art Fear And Fear Of Difference In An Introductory Art Course, Arthur Hochman, Kelli J. Esteves
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
University educators designed and co-taught a course which involved collaborative artmaking and learning with a community-based arts organization that serves individuals with disabilities. Their goal was to help university students examine the potential of art and how it applies to their personal and professional lives. They sought to better understand how to nurture a feeling of artistic agency in undergraduate students who do not define themselves as artists. Educators found that students benefited from an exploration of art fear through an inclusive approach to art creation.
Amelia's Gift, Daniel J. Mydlack
Amelia's Gift, Daniel J. Mydlack
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Professor Danny Mydlack recounts the mysterious arc of his student’s creative unfolding. Amelia, a middle-aged single mom, drops out of the personal videography production class before the end and yet her final assignment is delivered, posthumously, by her adult daughters. For the author, Amelia returned him to the core principles from his student days: the vast, wide terrain that is the true realm of art-making and an embrace of the fullness rather than merely the fineness of art practice. Mydlack proposes that with teaching there is more unseen than seen, more beyond our manipulation than within it, and that pedagogical …

The Non-Traditional Student Enrolled Full-Time In Art School, Sarah Kathryn O'Brien
Masters Theses
The unique needs, experiences, and contributions to the classroom of non-traditional students enrolled in a full-time undergraduate art program have been under-addressed in academic research. In this thesis, the author surveys existing research and reports on a series of surveys and some follow-up interviews conducted with both students and their professors. This thesis aims to identify the unique circumstances of non-traditional students in higher education and particularly in art school. The author identifies specific opportunities for fruitful continued research and application.
Color Me Calm: Adult Coloring And The University Library, Heidi Blackburn, Claire E. Chamley
Color Me Calm: Adult Coloring And The University Library, Heidi Blackburn, Claire E. Chamley
Nebraska Library Association: Conferences
An activity often reserved for children, coloring books for adults rose from hipster trend to global phenomenon beginning in 2013. Adults flocked to the activity for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, socialization, a way to unplug from technology or even as a way to gain social status by appearing trendy. Participants reported enjoying the tactile, interactive nature of the books as a respite from constant screen time. Coloring books became big business for craft suppliers and bookstores by 2015. Coloring books shot to the top of the Best Sellers list on Amazon and were prominently displayed in book …

Journal of Undergraduate Research
The academic objectives of this research project reached further than the initial objectives. We believe it was a very successful project in terms of meeting our academic objectives. The study affected our curricula here at the university as we investigated our thesis questions for this project. We (Dr. Barney and Dr. Graham) primarily teach undergraduates who are interested in teaching art at the K-‐12 levels and so there is a strong focus on what is important to know and teach at the K-‐12 levels. AP Art Studio programs are directed at 11th and 12th graders while foundations programs are usually …
Serious Fun: The Perceived Influences Of Improvisational Acting On Community College Students, Ruth H. Yamamoto
Serious Fun: The Perceived Influences Of Improvisational Acting On Community College Students, Ruth H. Yamamoto
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research in extracurricular activities and arts education demonstrate how experiences in those areas contribute to the well-being and ongoing development of students in higher education. Although practiced and performed across the United States, theatrical improvisation, as an art form or extracurricular activity, lacks investigation within the context of higher education. Without an understanding from the student perspective, higher educational stakeholders miss an opportunity to incorporate experiences that address the institutions' mission and learning goals or worse, inadvertently produce student disenfranchisement. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and describe the experience of improvisational acting training, practice, and performance …
Dreams Of A Motley Graduation Cap: A Proposal For Stand-Up Comedy In Higher Education, David Patterson
Dreams Of A Motley Graduation Cap: A Proposal For Stand-Up Comedy In Higher Education, David Patterson
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
It is said that the most valuable tool an education at a liberal arts university is how it produces well rounded people with a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. To produce people not only aware of current issues, but with the toolbelt needed to assess them and shed new light. If this is true, then I propose that the goals of liberal arts university are synonymous with the goals of a comedian.
In this thesis, I mean to draw ties to the world of stand up comedy and within the world of liberal arts academia. I …
In Situ Vision: The Student Experience Of Collaborative Learning In A Virtual Drawing Class, Annette Cohen
In Situ Vision: The Student Experience Of Collaborative Learning In A Virtual Drawing Class, Annette Cohen
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the construct of collaboration and the co-construction of knowledge in a distance learning drawing class. Distance learning drawing classes are rare, due to resistance by fine arts departments holding onto traditions that date back to Renaissance times. As a result, there is a paucity of literature on the subject. This multiple method study seeks an understanding of how students collaborate in critiques, form virtual communities and socially construct knowledge about learning how to draw. The study commences with the following three research questions: what social processes facilitate learning to draw from the …
