High School Visual Art Students' Perceptions Of Creativity, Jacqueline B. Henson-Dacey Jan 2015

High School Visual Art Students' Perceptions Of Creativity, Jacqueline B. Henson-Dacey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

When high school art teachers do not understand how their students experience creativity, studio art programs are less effective in fostering student learning than they would otherwise be. Nevertheless, extant research does not reveal a consistent or comprehensive understanding of how adolescents experience creativity in art education. Drawing on Csikszentmihalyi's theory of creativity and flow, this study explored students' perceptions of creativity and its relationship to flow, or the state of consciousness associated with optimal pleasure. This phenomenological study investigated students' perceptions of creativity and flow by interviewing nine high school advanced placement students in a public high school in …

Inoperative Art Education, Nadine M. Kalin, Daniel T. Barney Jan 2014

Inoperative Art Education, Nadine M. Kalin, Daniel T. Barney

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Increasingly, assessment has encroached on art education, inextricably linking visual arts learning to standardized performances wherein, art educators are becoming technicians accountable to the neoliberal state of education. Under these circumstances, the authors’ hearts and minds are understandably heavy for a postponement of art education as usual, proposing the question: Given the permission to escape art education’s current workings, what might art educators abandon, and how might they undertake this? IN order to delve into this provocation, the authors propose a limbo space of deferral in relation to art education that might inspire any predetermined usages inoperable. From this paradoxical …

The Coupling Of The Visual Arts With The Core Curriculum, Victoria Anne Beagle

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of the relationship between the visual arts and the core subjects in American public education, and how this relationship has changed over time. Additional aims of the study included how visual arts educators have positioned the visual arts in relationship to the core subjects since the visual arts entered public education. An initial examination of the current state of art education reveals the tenuous position it holds in 8America's schools. After identifying the four dominant paradigm shifts in art education during the twentieth century, each paradigm was examined through the …

Stem + Visual Art: The Development Of An Art Integrated Curricular Resource For K-12 Educators In Idaho, Drew Elaine Williams

Art Graduate Theses and Projects

The purpose of this M.A. Art Education project is to explore the reasoning, methods and justification for integrated art curricula in K-12 education, drawn from the belief that art is essential and inseparable from academics. In Idaho, the need for art teaching resources is especially great, as present funding circumstances and educational mandates have shifted away from the arts. Teachers do not always have access to resources and high-quality curricular materials. They do not always feel that they possess the knowledge, skills or confidence to successfully implement art lessons within their classrooms. The rationale and methods used to develop a …

The participants of …

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard Liddy Jan 2013

Art Education: Perspectives From Lonergan, Langer And Maslow, Richard Liddy

Department of Religion Publications

Hosting The Occupation Of Art Education As Aporia, Nadine M. Kalin Jan 2013

Hosting The Occupation Of Art Education As Aporia, Nadine M. Kalin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article articulates an ethics of hospitality within art education that adopts an uncertain disposition to visual arts learning and affirms the unforeseeable while inviting openings for the transformation of art education knowledges and associated subjectivities. Throughout, I endeavor to keep the question of whom we teach unanswered and open, while searching for spaces of possibility within unpredictable, aporetic entanglements inherent in normalizing frameworks of art education. I contextualize Derridean notions of aporia, hospitality, monstrous arrivant, undecidability, and responsibility within the specificities of art teaching that call on us to approach the field as contradictory and ambiguous so that we …

(De)Fending Art Education Through The Pedagogical Turn, Nadine M. Kalin Jan 2012

(De)Fending Art Education Through The Pedagogical Turn, Nadine M. Kalin

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This article reviews the current state of higher education in light of the pedagogical turn in contemporary art. It starts with an overview of higher education and its current struggles, followed by an outline of some of the features of the pedagogical turn in art, which is both critical of institutionalism and symptomatic of the current state of higher education. These ideas are discussed within the context of an art education graduate seminar. Finally, the argument is made for possible critical practices that take place inside the institution and that are inspired by priorities inherent in education as art projects …

Qualitative Research In Teaching Diversity In A Non-Diverse High School Setting Using Contemporary Art, Robin L. Reczek Dec 2011

Qualitative Research In Teaching Diversity In A Non-Diverse High School Setting Using Contemporary Art, Robin L. Reczek

Art Education Projects

Abstract

This qualitative action research study examined the effects of introducing diverse contemporary artworks into a non-diverse educational setting. For 3 months, 18 female high school students explored a range of artists, art styles, and artworks, in aid to discovering their own diverse qualities as well as the diversity of their classmates. Through participatory action research, I investigated how diverse contemporary artwork impacted student actions, discussions, and artworks. With the assistance of the transformative learning theory, I expected to convert students with non-accepting diversity views into unbiased young women. My research included data gathered from an assortment of alumni interviews, …

To The Ages Of Ages: Reconceptualizing High School Art History Curriculum, Amy Bergh

Theses and Dissertations

Through this curriculum study, I explored the application of ideas found within contemporary art education to a course of traditional secondary art history. These contemporary art education ideas included: visual culture instruction, interdisciplinary instruction, contemporary art instruction, curriculum development, the use of enduring ideas, and the inclusion of a variety of perspectives based on gender and ethnicity. Through these art education ideas, a new curriculum was formed, that pushed both the students and the teacher toward a more inclusive art history course that made real connections for students and allowed students to be active members in their own learning. Instruction …
