As faculty, we strive to develop methodologies to make more meaningful to students the concepts and principles taught in our courses. Over the years, growing literature has developed that supports the use of popular films, as well as documentaries, in college and university curricula. This essay is not intended as an exhaustive or comprehensive study of resources in this area, but rather as a guide to works that faculty will find relevant in supporting various courses.

Technological developments influence the way artists create works of art. Newer technologies associated with the Web, called Web 2.0, are changing and affecting the work of contemporary artists. One form of Web 2.0 is the development of podcasts, which are compressed files that can be shared through the Internet. Podcasts are mainstream and many art museums use them as a means to provide audio or video for visitors, virtual or real. The emergence of Web 2.0 and its related technologies has the potential to dramatically alter current educational practices. Because users now have the ability to rapidly create content and to engage in social interactions through the World Wide Web, we argue that Web 2.0 supports socially mediated, constructivist learning environments in ways that are becoming seamless. In this chapter, we describe the tenets of social constructivism and then discuss three technologies associated with Web 2.0 and explore how teachers and students could utilize them to promote constructivist learning.

Leaf through an issue of a parenting magazine and you will be inundated by page after page of bright, colorful products. These products reassure you that they are safe and reliable, often bearing labels such as "Mom Tested" or "Pediatrician Approved." The person shown is usually a smiling, physically fit Caucasian woman clad in a stylish outfit playing with her clean, happy children in a sunny and well-organized home. She is the Mythic Mom: buy these products and you too may attain her state of charming, if sometimes unruly, bliss.
