Austin State University (SFA), was awarded a Humanities Texas mini-grant to provide programming for the opening reception of the Portraits of Freedom art exhibition, June 11, 2015. A $1,000 grant from Humanities Texas paid the honoraria for two guest speakers, Dr. Douglas Chambers from the University of Southern Mississippi and Dr. Daina Berry from the University of Texas at Austin. Grids and Gestures is an exercise intended to offer participants insight into a comics maker’s decision-making process for composing the entire page through the hands-on activity of making an abstract comic. It requires no prior drawing experience and serves to help reexamine what it means to draw. In addition to a description of how to proceed with the exercise, this piece also includes conceptual grounding in the form of a brief theoretical discussion of the ways comics convey meaning as well as personal notes on the development of the exercise and how it has been used.

The article debuts and explains "PIM" pedagogy, a construct for teaching comics at the secondary- and post-secondary levels and for deep reading/studying comics. The PIM model for considering comics is actually based in major precepts of education studies, namely constructivist foundations of learning, and loosely unifies constructs inherent therein with other available frames and frameworks for studying comics. This field note describes a recent interdisciplinary project facilitated by Jeremy Gercke, an art teacher at the Bishop's School in La Jolla, California. The project creates ceramic tile markers for flora around the Bishop's School campus. The markers feature QR codes linking to websites populated with student content, including: drawings, information, and oral histories. In this project, Mr. Gercke synthesizes his interests as an artist; maximizes his social connections to mentors, peers and students; and bridges disciplines to create opportunities for interdisciplinary (STEAM) inquiry.

Ecoscience + Art Initiative: Designing A New Paradigm For College Education, Scholarship, And Service, Changwoo Ahn

The paper presents a new initiative, EcoScience + Art, which blooms at George Mason University. The creator explains the background, history, and recent activities of the initiative, and also introduces an on-going special project called “The Rain Project”, a student participatory project to design, construct, and monitor a green infrastructure (i.e., floating wetland) for sustainable stormwater management on campus. The special project is geared to design and present a new paradigm to integrate college education, scholarship, and service. The relevance of the initiative and the special project to STEAM education is discussed.

My sculpture “Pigs Feet” has literal foundations upon casts of live pig’s feet. I locally sourced the pig’s feet before casting them. My sculpture makes use of a once cutting edge casting technology, alginate. Alginate molds were once the standard in dentistry. Alginate is an appealing casting material as it is refined from brown seaweeds, is both food and skin safe, it is suitable for educators, for artists and engineers alike.

This study aims to develop a teaching and learning model of kalam (conversation) based on phonetic accuracy to improve students’ Arabic speaking ability. The research was conducted through questionnaires, interviews, error analysis, and content analysis. The results of the study are as follows: there are two forms of phonetic errors in students’ pronunciation, namely segmental and suprasegmental errors; most teachers and students did not pay attention to phonetic errors in students’ speech; however, most of them considered it important to place special emphasis on phonetic elements in learning kalam; the kalam teaching materials used thus far did not specifically emphasize …

This cross-sectional survey study investigates the preferences of freshmen and sophomores for corrective feedback in speaking instruction, including their perceptions of corrective feedback, the types of errors to be corrected, the timing of correction, the sources of correction, and the types of corrective feedback. Using questionnaires and interviews to collect the data, the study found that both groups welcomed corrective feedback, acknowledged its benefits, but felt embarrassed when corrected orally. Both freshmen and sophomores wanted all of their errors to be corrected. Whereas the freshmen preferred grammatical errors to be corrected consistently, the sophomores preferred phonological errors to be prioritized. …

This study was aimed at finding out the patterns of relationship between English language proficiency levels and upgrading strategies in disagreement by using conversation analysis. Students taking the Seminar on Linguistics course in the School of Cultural Studies at Brawijaya University were selected as the subjects of this study. They were classified into pre-intermediate, intermediate, pre-advanced, and advanced proficiency levels. The results of the analysis show that the students performed both direct and indirect disagreement, each of which resulted in different upgrading strategies. Pre-intermediate, intermediate, and pre-advanced students predominantly used the double-negation strategy. Students at the advanced level never performed …

Lamentation consists of poetic expressions and is predominantly recited by grieving wives to express their deepest anguish, making it difficult to translate because of its unique linguistic and cultural features. This study aims to describe the process and results of implementing the Écriture Automatique writing method in the Aufsatz I course. Specifically, it presents the findings based on data collected through questionnaires. The study indicates that the Écriture Automatique method encourages students to write, stimulates their creativity, and helps them elaborate their ideas. Based on the students’ writing activities across two class meetings, the average scores ranged from 80.1 to 84.1 out of a maximum score of 100, both of which fall into the good category.

This study aims to describe and explain: (1) the types of antonyms in the Lio language; (2) the categories of Lio antonyms; and (3) the linguistic units that may express oppositional meanings in Lio. The study is based on semantic theory, particularly the theory of antonymic word-meaning relations. The data were collected through direct observation and interviews, supported by note-taking and audio recording techniques. Language has demonstrated its role as a determining factor in hegemony, a phenomenon that Indonesian language teachers should take into consideration. Therefore, the teaching of the Indonesian language should be developed based on the principles of critical discourse analysis. Consequently, learners of Indonesian should develop critical language awareness and language sensitivity from the perspective of emancipation.

The journal, Paideia, included student research papers and alumni successes in the workplace from California Polytechnic State University’s Political Science Department.
