Operations Transformation
It is estimated that 65% of the population are visual learners. With that in mind, a team of cardiac nurses in a large academic tertiary hospital developed a quality improvement project to hopefully improve patient engagement as well the patients’ perception that the nurses explained things in a manner that they could understand.
Baseline patient survey scores for the question, “Nurses Explained Things In A Way That I Understand”, were under the 75thpercentile for a period of 9 months. A root cause analysis was conducted and it demonstrated numerous reasons for this score.
Several countermeasures were instituted to …

Evidence-Based Practice Self-Study Education Program For Staff Nurses On Genomics, Nancy L. Norman-Marzella
Evidence-Based Practice Self-Study Education Program For Staff Nurses On Genomics, Nancy L. Norman-Marzella
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nurses routinely obtain genomic data when collecting family health histories. However, they report low confidence in their knowledge and understanding of genomics and the genetically engineered medications prescribed for their patients. The purpose of this project was the development and implementation of an evidence-based online education program about genetics and genomics to increase the nurses' understanding and ability to provide competent care for their patients receiving treatments based on the science of genomics. Knowles's principles of adult learning theory guided the development and delivery of the online education project to 12 medical-surgical registered nurses employed in a hospital in the …

The Inevitability Of Playing Politics As Chair: 2018, Domenick Pinto
The Inevitability Of Playing Politics As Chair: 2018, Domenick Pinto
School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications
Politics is a term often frowned upon as it pertains to the role of an academic leader. However as chair and now director of a school for 30 years it has become an essential yet sometimes unwanted aspect of the daily rigors of the position. This workshop explores the pros and cons of “playing politics” as a department chair and allows interactivity among participants in “what if” scenarios citing various literature references along the way

The Impacts Of Delayed Starts In Maine Schools, Tim Tweedie
The Impacts Of Delayed Starts In Maine Schools, Tim Tweedie
M.S.Ed. in Educational Leadership Research Projects
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate the benefits and challenges associated with delayed starts in Maine high schools. In the past few years, several school districts in the midcoast-southern region of the state have elected to delay their high school start times for the purposes of allowing students more sleep. Across the five districts, administrators reported benefits to the delayed starts, and teachers reported more mixed results. In comparing between the five districts, the alignment patterns varied considerably.

Faculty And Staff Perceptions About Concealed Carry Initiatives And Their Effect On Campus Safety: A Multi-State Examination, Heidi Marie Ahl-Quanbeck
Faculty And Staff Perceptions About Concealed Carry Initiatives And Their Effect On Campus Safety: A Multi-State Examination, Heidi Marie Ahl-Quanbeck
Theses and Dissertations
Concealed carry on campus is a polarizing debate affecting higher education today. Concealed carry refers to the carrying of a weapon in public while concealed from view. Prompted by isolated instances of gun violence as well as the changing gun culture within our society, ten states now permit weapons on campus as a result of legislation or institutional policy. Yet, little is known about faculty and staff perspectives on concealed carry on campus initiatives or how weapons could affect perceptions about campus safety. The purpose of this study is to better understand faculty and staff perspectives on concealed carry, to …
Leading Schools Under Pressure: Considerations Of Systems Theory And Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support Efforts During School Actions, Hank Bohanon, Ashley Wahnschaff, Paul Flaherty, Kelly Ferguson
Leading Schools Under Pressure: Considerations Of Systems Theory And Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support Efforts During School Actions, Hank Bohanon, Ashley Wahnschaff, Paul Flaherty, Kelly Ferguson
Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works
This study analyzes the implementation of schoolwide positive behavior interventions and supports (SWPBIS) for the staff of one middle school that implemented SWPBIS during a districtwide strike and school merger. The researchers developed a qualitative case study based on focus groups and interviews with the staff who remained at the school following the merger. Analysis focuses on the nuances of supporting a school implementing SWPBIS during a season of anxiety-producing events. Systems theory is used both to identify the possible benefits of implementing SWPBIS during challenging seasons and to describe nuances for coaching schools during the SWPBIS process. Results indicate …
