Through the centuries, institutions of higher education, and the people who labor in those institutions, have helped countless millions to learn--to stretch their boundaries, to think creatively, to find joy in discovery, and to create new knowledge that benefits the world in a myriad of ways. Yet while the knowledge produced through our educational process has transformed the world, the process of teaching and learning within these institutions has remained largely unexplored and unchanged over the centuries (Bass, 2009; Duderstadt, Atkins, & Van Houweling, 2002; Woolsey, 2008). In recent years, the advent and rapid development of information technology has provided …
Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi
Causal Effects Of Single-Sex Schools On College Entrance Exams And College Attendance: Random Assignment In Seoul High Schools, Hyunjoon Park, Jere R. Behrman, Jaesung Choi
Hyunjoon Park
Despite the voluminous literature on the potentials of single-sex schools, there is no consensus on the effects of single-sex schools because of student selection of school types. We exploit a unique feature of schooling in Seoul, the random assignment of students into single-sex versus coeducational high schools, to assess causal effects of single-sex schools on college entrance exam scores and college attendance. Our validation of the random assignment shows comparable socioeconomic backgrounds and prior academic achievement of students attending single-sex schools and coeducational schools, which increases the credibility of our causal estimates of single-sex school effects. Attending all-boys schools or …

What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher
What Color Is Your Paratext?, Geoffrey Bilder, Andrée J. Rathemacher
Technical Services Department Faculty Publications
In the final vision session of the 2009 NASIG Annual Conference, Geoffrey Bilder from CrossRef discussed the problem of how to identify trustworthy scholarly information on the Internet. This problem is exacerbated by readers’ growing distrust of intermediaries such as publishers and librarians, by the fact that the Internet lacks the traditions that have developed in scholarly communication to ensure trust, and by the sheer amount of information now readily available. Paratext is understood as anything outside of a text that sets expectations about that text. In the past, paratext, for example a publisher logo, provided important clues as to …

Widening Participation In Higher Education And The Resultant Diversity Of Learners: A Review Of Government Policies, The Academy And Market Demands That May Influence This Trajectory., Ann Conway
Other resources
This paper will look at participation in higher education in Ireland and the current focus of encouraging students from non-traditional and underrepresented groups to understand the ‘why’ of the widening participation debate in higher education. It will then review the evolution of government policies in relation to higher education and in particular of widening access and participation, for example Bologna and Erasmus at EU level and the encouragement of mobility of students within the EU. The resultant shift and change in higher education policies to focus on widening participation has changed the traditional view of the academy which was once …

Rage Against The Machine? Symbolic Violence In E-Learning Supported Tertiary Education, N. F. Johnson, David C. Macdonald, T. M. Brabazon
Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)
The move toward online course facilitation in tertiary education has the intent of providing education at any time in any place to any person. However, the advent of blended learning and e-learning innovations has ostracised, marginalised or ignored those who cannot afford or who are unable to access the latest hardware and software to take advantage of these opportunities. The Web 2.0 age is an era of assumptions: assumptions of participation, literacy and democracy. Yet such inferences are based on the need for high-speed Internet connections, and the latest computers are standard requirements. Those without the ability to access these …

Lecturer Receptivity To A Major Planned Educational Change At Rajabhat Universities In Thailand, Anusak Ketusiri, Russell F. Waugh
Lecturer Receptivity To A Major Planned Educational Change At Rajabhat Universities In Thailand, Anusak Ketusiri, Russell F. Waugh
EDU-COM International Conference
Thailand passed the National Education Act (1999) which introduced the largest educational change there in over 50 years. This study investigated lecturer receptivity to that change at four Rajabhat Universities in the second year of the implementation stage during 2002. Lecturer receptivity was conceptualised as relating to nine aspects of the change. Data were collected by questionnaire (N=659) with 50 stem-items answered in three perspectives. These were (1) how I expect the change to be planned, (2) how I think the change was really implemented, and (3) what my actual behaviour was. Data were analysed with a Rasch measurement model. …

Background Report On College Affordability In Maine, Philip A. Trostel
Background Report On College Affordability In Maine, Philip A. Trostel
Economic Development
The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education gave Maine an “F” grade for affordability of higher education in both Measuring Up 2000 and Measuring Up 2002. In the 2000 report, Maine’s affordability score (54 on a 100-point scale) was 3rd worst in the nation (ahead of RI and NH). In the 2002 report, Maine’s affordability score (56) was in a three-way tie (with NY and VT) for 7th worst in the country (ahead of NH, RI, MT, OR, DE, OH). Although there are legitimate criticisms of the methodology for constructing these scores, it seems pretty clear that college …

The Development Of A University Library: The University Of Nebraska, 1891-1909, Sharon Mccaslin
All Theses, Dissertations, and Capstone Projects
The period of transition from a frontier university library to a modern, progressive institution is examined in terms of staff, buildings, collection, services, and administrative and financial support. At the end of this period this Nebraska library had a reputation in excess of that indicated either by financial support or collection size. Timely administrative support and pioneering professional librarians developed initial procedures in cataloging, reference, and interlibrary cooperation, which made the Library at the University of Nebraska one of the outstanding research libraries in the West.
