The Influence Of Slavery On The Black Body: Black Lives Matter’S Intersectional Methodology And New Advancements, Mone Dixon

Racial discrimination has been a significant problem in the United States. For centuries, African Americans have endured and resisted (in multiple ways) a system of bondage, a system where they faced political, economic, institutional, and social oppression. It is a system that condoned the violence that often resulted in the innocent deaths of Black bodies since the beginning of slavery. As property, the Black body was viewed and used as a commodity; thus the dehumanization of Black bodies was justified. The history of slavery demonstrates the different ways Black bodies have been and continue to be hindered by its effects. …

Diabetes Disparities In African Americans: A Cry For Help To Primary Care Providers, Pandora Goode

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Diabetes is a national public health problem. Low socioeconomic status influence access to quality care for African Americans with Diabetes who must rely on government assisted insurance or are uninsured. Inadequate access and poor quality care for African Americans contributes to increased morbidity and negative health outcomes. This manuscript will examine the existence of diabetes disparities in African Americans pertaining to the role of low socioeconomic status, access, and poor quality care, and suggest some practical strategies for reducing diabetes disparities in this population.

There has been a recent focus in research on a concept that centers on an individual’s ability to be persistent in the pursuit of their goals. This concept, referred to as grit, is an addition to the conversation about noncognitive measures that show promise to positively affect student academic performance. However, with the salient focus on the individual qualities that contribute to student success, it is important to avoid looking at these student qualities in isolation from the socio-ecological milieu (Ysseldyke, Lekwa, Klingbeil, & Cormier, 2012).
