Waiting On The World (Of Allied Healthcare) To Change: How Undergraduate Preparedness Curriculum Dis/Includes Ability, Brianna Donnelly
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Significant concerns for healthcare practitioners and allied health professionals continue to arise regarding treatment of persons with disabilities. Whether disability exists as apparent or non-apparent, temporary, or chronic, people with disabilities tend to be in poorer health and tend to use health care at a significantly higher rate than people who do not have disabilities. Importantly, the absence of professional training on disability competency issues for health care practitioners is one of the most significant barriers that prevent people with disabilities from receiving appropriate and effective health care. This qualitative narrative analysis explores the inclusion of disability concepts and people …

‘The Participation Group Means That I'M Low Ability’: Students’ Perspectives On The Enactment Of ‘Mixed-Ability’ Grouping In Secondary School Physical Education, Shaun D. Wilkinson, Dawn Penney
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Mixed-ability grouping is widespread in primary schools and in several subject areas in secondary schools in England. Notwithstanding, there is scant research on mixed-ability grouping in the education literature, particularly in terms of its impact on students’ experiences. The research reported in this paper employs enactment theory to provide original insights into the diverse practices and complex contextual factors that shape students’ perceptions and experiences of mixed-ability grouping in physical education (PE). Enactment theory acknowledges that school decisions about grouping policy are impacted by wider education policy and other contextual influences, and that the expression of grouping policies in specific …

Mixed-Ability Grouping In Physical Education: Investigating Ability And Inclusivity In Pedagogic Practice, Shaun D. Wilkinson, Dawn Penney
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
In the United Kingdom (UK) particularly, grouping strategies in secondary education have attracted considerable political attention. While setting students by ability is frequently adopted in mathematics, English and science, mixed-ability grouping is common in other subjects, including physical education (PE). Educational research exploring grouping has highlighted the need for research to extend understanding of the pedagogical assumptions, challenges and/or opportunities associated with the use of mixed-ability grouping in various subject and school settings. This case study research sought to examine mixed-ability grouping with a particular focus on how this grouping strategy was enacted in Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 …

A Lab Skills Diagnostic Test, John Zwart
A Lab Skills Diagnostic Test, John Zwart
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
The American Association of Physics Teachers recommends that physics majors have proficiency in the following lab skills: constructing knowledge, modeling, designing experiments, analyzing and visualizing data, and communicating physics. I have developed a brief multiple-choice questionnaire to assess incoming students’ lab skill level in these areas. It was administered as both a pre-test and post-test for the first semester of introductory calculus-based physics. Preliminary results indicate that little improvement on the skills tested occurs without explicit instruction.
Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Short- And Long-Run Effects Of Early Grades, Luca Facchinello
Research Collection School of Economics
Does early grading affect educational choices? To answer the question, I exploit the staggeredimplementation of a reform which postponed grade assignment in Swedish compulsoryschool. I identify short- and long-term effects of early grading, for students with differentacademic ability and socioeconomic status (SES). When graded early on, high-ability students(especially if high-SES) perform better, and are more likely to choose academic coursesduring compulsory school. Low-ability students react in the opposite way, in particular iflow-SES. While high school attainment increases for high-ability low-SES students, collegeattainment decreases for low-ability low-SES students. None of these effects carry over tothe labor market. This suggests that early …
Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello
Peer Effects In Education: When Beliefs Matter, Luca Facchinello
Research Collection School of Economics
Recent literature explains the puzzling finding of zero or negative peer effects in aca- demic achievement assuming that better peers negatively affect beliefs about ability (self-concept), motivation or peer interactions. This paper provides new evidence on such negative mechanisms, and on their impact on educational choices and attainment for students randomly assigned in compulsory school to classes with different cognitive ability. Using detailed longitudinal data on a nationally representative sample of Swedish compulsory school students, I find that students exposed to higher ability peers systematically underestimate their ability and are less likely to choose advanced subjects throughout compulsory school. While …

The Growth Mindset School Community, Christina A. Hild
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional school models perpetuate limited notions of ability. Established in systems designed to label and sort, educators must examine their beliefs about ability and the ways culture and power structures impact expectations and student achievement. By adopting a growth mindset lens and applying distributed leadership to systems within a school, educational leaders can enhance opportunities for all children. The Growth Mindset School Community describes an organization committed to growth and reflective processes intended to monitor thinking and procedures impacting learning and growth. Teacher expectations, feedback, assessment, and grading practices, behavior management, special education, teacher evaluation, and leadership models are all …

The Effects Of Reading Fluency Interventions On Different Populations Of Students Repeated Readings Vs. Lexia Core 5, Matt Den Hartog
Master of Education Program Theses
Much research has been conducted on the importance of reading fluency. Researchers nearly all conclude that reading fluency greatly affects a student’s overall ability to read. However, often times reading fluency is not given the same importance in intermediate and upper elementary grades. This study was conducted to determine whether Lexia Core 5 or repeated reading interventions had a greater effect on reading fluency gains for third through fifth grade students in one rural, public school. Forty-two students participated in the twelve week study. Various different subgroups of students were looked at and monitored. The final results, as a whole, …
